THE DIGEST
Look whoâs on her way out of town đ
The container ship Dali passed under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge yesterday morning after leaving Baltimore for the first time since collapsing the Key Bridge three months ago. Even though it traveled under its own power, five tugboats, a Coast Guard vessel, and a Bay pilot boat kept a watchful eye on the massive ship as it went under the bridge. Itâs headed to Norfolk for repairs and should arrive around 9 AM according to MarineTraffic.
Honoring Anne Arundelâs Black police officers đ
Anne Arundel County PD hired its first two Black officers in 1965. But it took all the way until 2012 to reach 100 cumulative Black officers. Last week, AACPD paid tribute to those first 100 Black officers with a plaque now displayed in its Davidsonville training facility. It was officially unveiled and dedicated during a ceremony on Juneteenth. Around 20 of the 100 officers on the plaque attended including Reggie Harris â one of those first two. The other, Norfleet Barnes, died in 2015. Chief Amal Awad, who became AACPDâs first Black female police chief in 2020, said the plaque serves as a reminder not to ârepeat the ills of the pastâ and represents the departmentâs commitment to âcreate a police department that reflects the beautiful diversity of Anne Arundel County.â ($)
Class of 2028 arrives for Induction Day âď¸
If youâve never witnessed Induction Day for the incoming freshmen class (aka plebes), itâs an emotional and monumental day. This yearâs I-Day will see 1,200 members inducted into the Class of 2028 on Thursday (6/27). Plebes report at 6 AM for various stations in Alumni Hall such as haircuts, medical exams, and learning to salute.
The day culminates with an Oath of Office ceremony at 6 PM in T-Court. After the ceremony, plebes say tearful goodbyes to their families who made the trip and FaceTime those who couldnât. They wonât see each other again until Plebe Parentsâ Weekend on August 8.
Automated Traffic Enforcement Speed Camera Program đ¸
Good news â our streets should be safer soon. Anne Arundel County PD launched its Automated Traffic Enforcement Speed Program yesterday. The new initiative uses Portable Camera Units (PCUs) to enforce speed limits. The county will install up to 40 PCUs in designated school zones and some residential areas based on traffic patterns, crash history, and accident history. PCUs will be installed in phases, beginning with school zones. Here are the 5 initial locations:
Wellham Avenue, Glen Burnie â Cromwell Elementary
Governor Stone Parkway, Severna Park â Shipleyâs Choice Elementary
Solley Road, Glen Burnie â Solley Elementary
Truck House Road, Severna Park â Oak Hill Elementary
Shore Acres Road, Arnold â Broadneck Elementary
The system will only issue warnings for the first 15 days at each designated location. After the 15-day warning period, and once an officer determines that a citation is warranted, motorists traveling 12 mph or more over the posted speed limit will get a citation with a $40 fine by mail. Visit aacounty.org/speedcameras for more info.
AACPL shifting hours in September â°
At the end of the summer, Anne Arundel County Public Library will start closing an hour earlier. This shift from 9 PM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday means AACPL will have more resources for hours when most people use the library. (Did you know: Only 1% of library patrons use the library during that 8â9 PM weekday hour?) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours will remain the same. And hey night owls đŚ, donât forget that AACPL has heaps of online resources available 24/7.

LOCAL BUSINESS
đ Day 1 of Annapolis Wears Hope in the books
Iâve got good news and bad news. First, the bad. I hope you didnât want a complimentary monthlong membership at Yoga Factory and a massage from Eternal Thai Massage because we picked Mary Romaâs name out of a hat last night and she claimed the first Annapolis Wears Hope drawing. But the good news is that there are still 5 more drawings. Weâre picking a name every day this week. And all you have to do is shop at Wrabyn and grab some chances when checking out. Or even easier, grab as many chances as you want online.
Wrabynâs generously donating 10% of sales to Annapolis Hope all week long so if you need some new looks this summer, head on over to 12 Annapolis Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Wendy and her awesome team will make you look great!
A positive charge for small businesses đ
BGE is powering local small businesses with more than just electricity â the energy provider also offers business grants. If youâre a for-profit business whoâs currently a BGE electric and/or gas customer in good standing, you could be eligible. The grant program started in 2021 in response to the need for COVID-19 relief, and in the years since, BGE has awarded $7.98 million (with a pledge for $15 million total). The deadline for the latest round of grants is 6 PM on July 12.

WHATâS HAPPENINâ
A serious live music dilemma
Houston Annapolis, we have a problem. Two of our best music groups are both playing this Thursday and sadly, thereâs no way to make both. Thatâs because the Naptown Brass Band is playing on a Watermark cruise from 7â9 PM and Timmie Metz Band is playing Tides and Tunes from 7â9 PM. Naptown Brass Band is an Annapolis icon and Timmie Metz sounds like Chris Stapleton so this really is a tough decision. Best of luck.
Theater Talk Tuesday
CTM presents The Miser
Classic theater feels a lot more approachable (and delicious) when itâs performed in the outdoor courtyard at Reynolds Tavern, as Classic Theatre of Maryland does every year. This time around itâs The Miser, Moliereâs comedy about a nasty miser and his household trying to get one over on him. See it tonight at 7:30 PM or any Tuesday throughout July and August (except July 16 & August 20).
