30 million oysters, it's a Wildberry Weekend, bullride mania...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. The air quality index is dropping. Like golf, lower scores are better. But it’s still not great so stay safe out there. No shame in staying inside this weekend!

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Wildberry Field Markets return

  • Annapolis Blues tailgate plans

  • Paint Annapolis

Let’s get to it.

Who is Dr. Bailey?

Glad you asked. Dr. Marianne Bailey is a rare breed – an independent veterinarian. Most have been snatched up by private equity firms. Dr. Bailey puts patients first, not the bottom line. Which is the best way to have a great bottom line.

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital opened in April and has already seen hundreds of dogs, cats, and even rabbits. All three veterinarians – Dr. Bailey, Dr. Colleen McCafferty, and Dr. Stephanie Chabalko – are USDA accredited and hold the highest certifications available.

Whether it’s diagnostics, dental care, or surgery, Dr. Bailey and her team treat pets with the utmost compassion. Because like their own, they understand your pets are part of the family.

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is conveniently located at 910 Unit C on Bestgate Road right across from Annapolis Mall.

QUICK HITS

🦪 30 million oysters dumped in the Severn

The Severn River Association (SRA) and Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) dumped 30 million baby oysters into the Severn River near Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park this week. Normally we don’t celebrate river dumping but oysters are essential to healthy water. An oft-cited statistic (by conservationists and those who refuse to eat them) is that adult oysters filter over 50 gallons of water per day. The baby oysters take 3 years to become adults – which is when they start filtering and reproducing. ($)

🎓️ Diploma Dilemma

Over 500 students graduated from Broadbeck High School on Tuesday. It was a great celebration followed by many parties, unsolicited college advice, and what-are-you-majoring-in-agains? Just one problem. Broadbeck High School doesn’t exist and the students spent the last 4 years attending class at Broadneck High School.

Apparently the print proof was correct when the printer sent it to the school but something went wrong during printing. Graduates will be mailed correct diplomas this week. Never a group to waste a prank opportunity, one student used tape to turn the “n” on Broadneck’s sign into a “b.” It was quickly rectified but not before someone put a photo on Facebook. ($)

Not the first time this happened in Annapolis. In 1990, 990 midshipmen graduated from the “Navel Academy.” And while I’m extremely disappointed nobody’s created a core workout program called Navel Academy, someone from Pittsburgh did create Navel Academy Soap.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🇨🇳 Canton Restaurant in West Annapolis closing

After over 60 years of business in West Annapolis, the Canton Chinese restaurant is closing its doors for good. If this is devastating to you, there’s still time. The doors are open until June 30. Two fun facts about the Canton:

1️⃣ It’s been owned by the same family all 60+ years

2️⃣ For many of those years, it was the only Chinese restaurant in Annapolis

Stop by 7 days a week at 11 Ridgely Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401.

👩‍🌾 It’s a Wildberry Weekend

For the first time this season, Wildberry Farm is stoked to welcome guests to its popular Field Market. The local shopping happens 9 AM–1 PM but if you want to support a little extra, there’s a ribbon cutting at 8:45. The first 50 guests get a goodie bag if you need to be bribed 😉. New this year is the Wildberry Farm to Table Food Trailer featuring Rise Up Coffee, breakfast burritos with Wildberry eggs, overnight oats, fruit, and sweetbreads. About 60 other local vendors will line the field so I personally guarantee you will find something cool. 1047 St. Stephens Church Road, Crownsville, MD 21032.

Hospice of the Chesapeake is meeting you where you are in our community

Just as different communities celebrate life in their own way, they also approach end of life in their own way. Meeting you where you are means reaching out to community centers, business leaders, faith leaders, and more to learn what you need from your hometown hospice.

As Maryland’s largest independent nonprofit hospice, Hospice of the Chesapeake is committed to caring for everyone, regardless of race, gender, age, or religion. Like the donated patient comfort quilts (seen above), Hospice of the Chesapeake is a patchwork of experts celebrating our differences in one beautiful blanket of support.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

💃 Learn to Tango at City Dock

Can you imagine a better backdrop for dancing than City Dock? I can’t. On a normal Friday night, you might get funny looks if you started dancing in the middle of Susan Campbell Park. But not tonight. There’s a free tango class from 6–7 PM where you can learn the basics. After class, an orchestra plays until 10 PM. You know what they say about tango . . . it takes two. So grab your lover (bonus points if you don’t tell them where you’re going) and have the date night you deserve.

🎨 Paint Annapolis & Arts Day

It’s a big week for art in Annapolis. Artists have been working outside all week and it has not been very fun to be outside. You can see all the juried artist paintings, find out who wins, and have first crack at buying your faves tonight at the Collectors’ Reception from 6–8 PM. The exhibition officially opens Saturday with the Opening Reception from 5–7 PM at the Maryland Federation of Art Pop Up Gallery at 4 Church Circle.

Since Saturday is Arts Day, there are a ton of other art events like pop-up galleries, live painting demos, and artist receptions. Click here to see them all.

🤠 Rodeo at the County Fairgrounds

Favorite blue jeans? ✅ Trusty boots? ✅ Cowboy hat? ✅ That’s your uniform for Bullride Mania this Saturday night at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds. It’s sure to be a rootin’ tootin’ good time with breakaway roping, mutton busting, bullriding, and barrel racing. I have no idea what half of those are but they sound like they must be fun. Beer and food will be available to purchase. The rodeo starts at 7 PM; gates open at 5 PM. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 6–15, and free for 5 and under. Buy online to save time at the gate. 1450 Generals Highway, Crownsville, MD 21032.

Annapolis Blues return to the pitch

The unbeaten Annapolis Blues return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this weekend for a match against Virginia Beach City FC. The boys in blue took care of business with a 4–0 win on May 27 in the teams’ first meeting this season. Fun fact: Apart from their first match, the Blues have posted at least 4 goals in every game this season. Here’s hoping they keep the streak alive this weekend. This week’s game is at 7 PM. Let’s keep that record-breaking attendance going!

🍻 Your tailgate plans for Annapolis Blues

Sure you could make your own tailgate but that requires grocery shopping, grill hauling, and a whole lot of cleanup. Why not just let someone else do it? Luckily this weekend the Annapolis Home Brew Club’s Pints 4 Paws Homebrewing and Craft Beer Festival is happening just before the Blues Game in the stadium parking lot. It features 50+ homebrews to try as well as the professional brews of at least 6 local breweries. Tickets are limited and this has sold out two years in a row so get yours now. Proceeds support the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

💙 Love is Love Festival

Need Sunday Funday plans? Here ya go. The Love is Love Festival is open to the public at the Eastport Democratic Club from 12–6 PM. If you’ve never been to an EDC party, you should know they do it right. Food options include Timber Pizza and burgers/hot dogs from the grill. Bars will be set up inside and out and there will be a beer truck. West St. Revival and Friends will play music from 1–4 PM and there’s a kids corner with face painting, yard games, and coloring books. $5 entry supports two nonprofits, Stand with Ukraine and AMFM. 525 State St, Annapolis, MD 21403.

EXTRA SPRINKLES

The hottest new venue in Annapolis

Annapolis has a couple waterfront venues. But nothing like this. The Merrill Family Pavilion at the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Park Campus is a cathedral of rustic timber, perfectly set in nature just steps from Back Creek. Majestic soaring ceilings and chandeliers cover 2,600 square feet which can be enclosed and features fans to keep things cool. When it’s chilly, light up the massive wood-burning fireplace.
