🍦The dog-friendliest coffee shop in town

Annapolis celebrates Juneteenth, Farragut Farmers Market returns, last sawmill conserved...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. America’s version of the Tour de France started this week. It’s called Race Across America (RAAM) but unlike the Tour, there are no stages. Once the clock starts, it doesn’t stop until the riders reach our very own City Dock – which should be sometime next week 🚴

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Father’s Day ideas

  • Juneteenth Parade/Festival info

  • Annapolis’s newest coffee shop

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Happy birthday to Cailey Locklair! 🎂 🥳

Tides and Tunes returns in force

Over 1,000 people packed the beach, docks, parking lot, and wherever else they could last night at the Maritime Museum for the return of the quintessential Annapolis concert series – Tides and Tunes. Timmie and Tambo rocked as usual. I’m still convinced Timmie could double for Chris Stapleton in a pinch (with a fake beard of course). As attendee Ray Witte said, it was “crowded but definitely a good time.”

Next up? Sweet Leda next week. The show starts at 7 PM.

P.S. Naptown Scoop is a proud sponsor of Tides and Tunes. Look out for our logo behind the stage!

Taste the Rainbow at The Choptank

The humble orange crush. A workhorse of warm-weather leisure and Annapolis' unofficial drink of summer. Did you know it was invented in Ocean City back in ‘95?

As an Annapolis icon, The Choptank knew it needed good, no, great crushes. It all starts with juice – fresh squeezed just like it was in Ocean City circa 1995. Well . . . technically it starts with the ice. Pellet ice like everyone's favorite chicken restaurant uses. Then comes the juice.

Followed by Texas-made Deep Eddy vodka, triple sec, and a splash of Sprite. Swap club soda and you have a skinny crush.

Personally, I'm a grapefruit guy. Not skinny. Something about that huge fresh slice hanging off the rim like a bow on a birthday present gets me every time.

Winter’s over. It’s crush season at The Choptank. Make your reservations today.

THE DIGEST

🌳 The last sawmill

DNR and the Scenic Rivers Land Trust (SRLT) recently partnered with Crownsville’s Gary and Janet Garman to permanently conserve 130 acres of land. The property was #8 on SRLT’s top 100 properties to conserve. The Garmans could have developed a neighborhood with at least 24 homes. Instead, it will be forest and farm forever with just one main residence and two guest houses. The conservation easement also includes the last remaining sawmill in Anne Arundel County.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🐶 Eastport’s new morning routine

When I say “famous dog” you may think Toto, Snoopy, or Lassie. We think Oscar. He’s the namesake of Eastport’s newest coffee shop – which happens to be a restored 1970s Shastra trailer. The Oscar’s team is near and dear to Scoop’s heart (one co-owner designed our logo). And they’re also veterans of the Annapolis restaurant scene. After weeks of soft opening, Oscar’s is now open 7 AM–12 PM daily in the Horn Point Harbor parking lot. 105 Eastern Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Oscar’s owners (L ➡️ R) Lee and Katie Snead, Garrett Harper, Joshua Bruce, and Will Cunha

Ribbon cutting 🤝 Hair cutting

After 25 years of styling hair, Kimberly knows there’s nothing like a fresh cut. Her brand new salon, All Dolled Up, opens with a ribbon cutting today at 4 PM. Come see the chic new space where they offer color treatments, cuts, balayage, and much more. 946 Bay Ridge Rd, Annapolis, MD 21403.

🍓Farragut Farmers Market returns

Strawberries aren’t berries. Pumpkins are fruits. Not all oranges are orange. Confused yet? The Farragut Farmers Market opens at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this Sunday (and continues weekly through August 20) and you can bring your botanical identity crisis with you. For its second season, the market has more vendors, yoga, live music, and more. Parking at the stadium is free but so is walking or biking 😉. 9 AM–1 PM Sunday.

Coffee, Cars, & Cops

You know what dads love? Aside from falling asleep during movies, bad jokes, and clinking grill tongs. . . . They love cars.

So if you are a dad, have a dad, are married to a dad, or you just love cars, you might want to block 9–11 AM on June 18 on your calendar.

Westfield Annapolis is hosting the Mid-Atlantic Venom Mustangs & Muscle Cars Club and Anne Arundel County PD for a family-friendly gearhead gathering. Aside from the cars, there will also be a DJ, food trucks, and other family-friendly activities.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

🎆 Annapolis celebrates Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a relative newcomer to the Annapolis parade scene – this is just its third running – but it’s already become one of the most popular. The parade steps off at 12 PM at City Dock and is followed by a free all-day festival at the Bates Athletic Complex. Read that last sentence again. Unlike all other Annapolis parades, this one starts at City Dock. The festival includes performances from Vivian Green, Rakim, and more as well as dozens of local vendors. Don’t miss the fireworks at 9:15 PM! Parade route 👇️

2023 Annapolis Juneteenth Parade route

History lesson: Juneteenth marks the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865. Maryland enslaved people saw emancipation 230 days earlier.

CIVIL NEWS

💰County Council passes 2024 budget

County Executive Steuart Pittman plans to spend $2.14 billion in 2024. Which is about $2.14 billion more than I’ll ever spend in a year. Now that County Council’s approved it (with a 6-1 vote), we looked for some highlights so you don’t have to read 648 pages of boring (but important) math.

  • More money for teachers: AACPS employees will get raises of 6–8% and starting teacher salaries are jumping to around $58k.

  • More public safety positions: 23 new police officers, 18 new firefighters, and 1 new captain.

  • Tax hikes: Property tax rates are rising from 93 cents per $100 of assessed value to 98 cents per $100. Any earners making over $400k (or $480k for joint filers) will also see a slight bump.

If you want to read for yourself, you can read the whole budget or the abridged version right here.
