In Pursuit of the Perfect Pumpkin Spice Latte
We’re on a mission. A highly caffeinated mission to taste every autumn drink at every local coffee shop. Who’s we? I’m glad you asked.
One half is me, Scoop publisher Ryan. The better half is Natalie Franke – Eastport resident, bestselling author, and Mama Bear for Small Business.
Together, we’re stoked to reveal the Great Annapolis Pumpkin Spice Coffee Crawl of 2023 – TGAPSCC2023 for short. It has 2 parts. Let me explain.
Part 1 is a video review at each coffee shop. Just like our famous Crabcake Reviews, Natalie and I are hitting up every shop in town to test their fall drinks on camera. We’ll post the first one next week. The second part involves you.
When you go to any participating coffee shop between now and November 3, you can get a TGAPSCC2023 punch card. Be one of the first 25 to fill it up and you’ll get a free shirt so you can sport the official motto all over town. . .
Drink Local or Die Trying.
Participating is easy. Just visit the TGAPSCC2023 website at Annapolis.Coffee to learn how.

Bold Prediction: This won’t last the weekend
Attention Eastport home seekers. Brad Kappel just listed a fabulous property on Chesapeake Avenue that’s one in a million.
The front of the property hosts an updated, 2-bedroom Craftsman Cottage with a fantastic floor plan and beautifully preserved 1920s charm. The back of the property hosts a garage-turned-guesthouse with such a spectacular renovation you may want to live there.
In between the structures are two idyllic spaces – an expansive wooden deck off the main home and a large stone patio in the yard. I’d use the deck as my outdoor dining room and retire to the patio for fireside cocktails and dessert after dinner.
Brad’s hosting an open house this Saturday (9/30) from 11 AM–1 PM. I bet this home won’t last the weekend so clear your calendar and get yourself to Eastport!
No score changes today. It’s still not too late to join. The hunt ends October 1. Click here to register.
THE DIGEST
Mobile food pantry rolls out đźšš
Not everyone has access to a car to get to a food pantry. But put that food pantry on four wheels and. . . Bam! Now we’re cooking like Emeril Lagasse. The Anne Arundel Food Bank launched a mobile food pantry last week that holds 3,000 pounds of food and serves up to 100 households per visit. One week in, it’s already served 85 families.
The truck currently visits southern Anne Arundel once a month but plans to stop in a “food insecure” neighborhood once a week in the future. ($)
Every champion was once a beginner
Want your kid to step onto life’s (literal and figurative) mat with confidence? Consider enrolling them in the Navy Junior Wrestling Program. Registration is open through October 15 for the next season at Lejeune Hall. Programs are available for kids as young as age 4 and skill levels from novice to expert. Wrestling skills are just one perk – the teamwork, work ethic, and self-esteem are invaluable. Click here to learn more.

LOCAL BUSINESS
EEOC sues local Montessori school
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit against the Chesapeake Montessori School in Annapolis for allegedly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The suit claims that in 2021, the school refused to rehire Michelle Washington due to concerns about her daughter’s cystic fibrosis and COVID-19. Michelle had been employed at the school, which contracts with teachers on a yearly basis, since 2007. The EEOC is seeking back pay, lost benefits, and additional compensation for pecuniary losses.
Chesapeake Montessori's Head of School, Robb Wirts, says they follow all disability laws and will defend the case, which he expects to win. The EEOC declined to comment except through this press release. ($)
South County Farmers breathe a sigh of relief
Back in March, Anne Arundel County bought a grain elevator from Purdue. It was one of those yellow-sign, everything-must-go buys because Purdue was shutting down the elevator. That was bad news for local farmers. But here’s some good news.
Anne Arundel County has identified a third-party operator for the elevator who plans to have it up and running in just a few weeks.
👨‍🌾 Fun Farm Facts: A grain elevator stores and moves grain in bulk. And it lets farmers have more say in when to sell their product. It was invented in 1842, 8 years before the dishwasher.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
An intimate backyard concert for cool people only
We love a packed-out stadium concert. But a backyard concert? That’s VIP access like Taylor Swift now gets at Chiefs games. Singer-songwriter Carsie Blanton performs sold-out shows around the world. But this Friday (9/28) she’s playing an intimate, backyard show right here in Annapolis as the first of a new Sounds of Yoga Factory series. Get tickets ($25) on the Yoga Factory app, available on iPhone and Android.

CIVIL NEWS
Dr. Bedell’s not Lebron James-ing AACPS
AACPS superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell isn’t interested in higher office any time soon. State superintendent of schools Mohammed Choudhury recently announced he’s not seeking a second term. And even though his name’s been brought up as a replacement, Dr. Bedell’s work in Anne Arundel isn’t finished. In his trademark transparency, he wrote this in a letter to staff, “I do not intend to seek the position being vacated by Mr. Choudhury.” ($)
🎧 We interviewed Dr. Bedell on the Naptown Scoop Show shortly after he started and it’s Scoop publisher Ryan’s favorite episode ever. Check it out on Apple podcasts or Spotify.

⚜️St. Mary’s Athletic Director heading to Hopkins
Allison Fondale stepped down last week after almost 10 years leading athletics at St. Mary’s High School. And she just revealed the lucky place that gets her next: John Hopkins University. She’ll serve as assistant athletic director.
During her time leading Saints sports, they won no less than 28 championships, 5 coming in the last year. St. Mary’s also sent 42 athletes into college sports last year – a school record.
The Blue Jays are lucky to have you, Allison. We know they’ll soar under your leadership. ($)
