Good morning, Annapolis. Your kindness blew me away this week. In 5 hours, you filled 100% of the spots for our blood drive. I thank you. AAMC thanks you. And the patients whom youā€™ll never meet but may very well save thank you.

In todayā€™s Naptown Scoop:

  • Naptown Music Feast

  • The coolest club in Severna Park

  • Gun givebacks

Letā€™s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Major Stories of the Week

āš½ļø šŸŽŸļø Premier League soccer, uh. . . football, is coming to Annapolis on July 31. The game between Crystal Palace and Wolves kicks off at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 8 PM. Score tickets starting Monday.

šŸŽ šŸŒŸ Elizabeth Heist is AACPSā€™ 2024 Teacher of the Year. The Lake Shore Elementary music teacher is the schoolā€™s first teacher to win the prestigious title.

šŸŒŠ šŸŽ¶ The Annapolis Maritime Museum released this summerā€™s Tides and Tunes lineup. These free beachside concerts happen at the Eastport museum on Thursday evenings from June 13 to August 29.

Top clicks of the week šŸ†

Water Taxis now run 7 days a week ā›“ļø šŸš•

I feel like a broken record but hereā€™s yet another sign that warm weather is officially here. Our beloved water taxis are back to running 7 days a week. These little boats are part of what makes Annapolis so special. And if youā€™ve never used them and are a little intimidated (like I was once), hereā€™s a handy little map. Call that number to hail a boat.

Ever wondered how people get to the boats in the middle of the harbor? Probably water taxi!

šŸ”« Give back your guns. No questions asked.

Annapolis PD is doing something new this weekend ā€“ a gun giveback. Anyone can surrender any gun, no matter how ill-gotten or illegal, at the station on Saturday. No questions asked. Just unload your gun, arrive between 10 AM and 2 PM, and let the officer on duty remove it from your car. Theyā€™ll happily take your ammo too. Just make sure the gunā€™s unloaded. 199 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21401.

LOCAL BUSINESS

The coolest music club in Severna Park

Thereā€™s a new venue in town for live music. Laura MacKay, a Severna Park High alum and longtime music advocate, recently opened Parris Underground. But this isnā€™t your average music venue. Itā€™s all about the music and those who enjoy it so two things are different than most venues. No age restrictions and no alcohol. They do have a non-alcoholic bar with homemade lemonade and limeade though.

Performances are 7ā€“10:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays starting tonight. Thereā€™s also a weekly open mic night Sunday from 4ā€“7 PM. Bring cash. Thereā€™s a $10 cover. Note: Parris Underground is closed for a private event this Saturday. 497 Ritchie Highway, Suite 1C, Severna Park, MD 21146.

Oscar's Coffee and SPCA šŸ¶ ā˜•ļø šŸ¾

Oscarā€™s Coffee, Eastportā€™s favorite waterfront coffee trailer, has been the most dog-friendly coffee shop in town since day 1. But tomorrow, itā€™ll be even more so. Because the SPCAā€™s mobile unit will park dockside with their lovable adoptable animals. Even if your house is at max pet capacity like mine, sipping on one of Oscarā€™s new spring specials while meeting new dogs still sounds like a perfect Saturday. 5/11 from 10 AMā€“12 PM. 105 Eastern Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Expect the unexpected šŸŽ¼

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is about to complete their 62nd year of bringing incredible music to the county. Did you know that they are a nationally ranked professional orchestra with 70+ contracted musicians? This season of performances has been unforgettable. Donā€™t miss out on the last performance of the season: Masterworks VI ā€œThis Midnight Hourā€.

It features Franz Joseph Haydnā€™s Symphony N. 104, Jean Sibelius with Symphony N. 02, and Anna Clyne, who brings forth the terroir of a moment and place in her This Midnight Hour. And check this out ā€“ Scoop readers get 30% off up to 4 tickets! Just enter the code MIDNIGHT at checkout. Performances are at 7:30 PM on May 10 and 11 at Maryland Hall.

WHATā€™S HAPPENINā€™

Historic Annapolis Plant Sale šŸŖ“

Consider this your final reminder for the annual Historic Annapolis Plant Sale. Itā€™s Saturday (5/11) from 10 AMā€“4 PM and Sunday (5/12) from 12ā€“4 PM. The 50-year tradition always draws a huge crowd to William Pacaā€™s garden but we know a secret. Historic Annapolis members get in 30 minutes early on Saturday and get 10% off. Thatā€™s 10% off any of the 7,000+ plants to choose from. Iā€™d say joiningā€™s worth it for that reason alone. Either way, enter the garden at 1 Martin Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

The easiest race youā€™ll ever run

My college friend, David, once ran a half-marathon with zero training. He couldnā€™t walk right for weeks. But I bet you can run Saturdayā€™s 0.05k Bridge Run without training. First off, donā€™t assume the ā€œkā€ stands for kilometer. Given that the Spa Creek bridge is about 700 feet long, that wouldnā€™t be quite right; 0.05 km = 164 feet. Second, donā€™t stress. Runnerā€™s World once called this ā€œthe least challenging athletic event ever conceived.ā€ Most people finish in less than a minute. I plan to run in a suit en route to my best friendā€™s wedding.

Sound doable? Great! Register online today or in-person (before 11:30 AM) on the Eastport side of the bridge Saturday. Not fast? There are awards for costumes, too. My favorite is the ā€œDang, I Wish Iā€™d Thought of That Costumeā€ award. Theyā€™ll be awarded during the afterparty at Oā€™Learys.

Rock on and eat up šŸŽøšŸ”

Nope, itā€™s not a typo ā€” the Naptown Music Feast (not Fest) is so named because it combines local music groups and 20+ food trucks. This festival at the county fairgrounds starts at noon Saturday, goes until 10 PM, and features music from:

  • Petty Coat Junction

  • Sons of Pirates

  • Jah Works

  • The Regal Beagles

  • Sweet Leda

  • Midnight Madnezz

Plus you (or at least the kids) can ride a mechanical bull, climb a rock wall, or test your axe-throwing skills. Yeah, better leave that stuff to the kids. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. Love a deal? Buy 3 tickets and get 1 free. Kids under twelve are also free!
