Good morning, Annapolis. We may be in for some heavy rainfall Sunday so double check if stuff you read about in the Scoop is still on before heading out.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolis Blues’ final regular season game

  • Local author releases first novel

  • A really cool ship

Let’s get to it.

Waterfront getaway or year-round home

Perched high above Valentine Creek, 416 Tulip Trail’s main level flows seamlessly almost without walls. Light and bright colors make it even bigger. But it’s still cozy thanks to a corner fireplace.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms – a magnificent waterfront primary and guestroom (both with en suites) and two smaller bedrooms that share a hall bathroom.

The four-car garage connects to a unique circle driveway. No backing out here. Above that is 550+ square feet of flexible space. Make it whatever you want. The private pier has a 12,500-pound lift, 7 feet MLW, power, water, and a large seating area.

Downstairs is a self-sufficient space with a bedroom, full bathroom, kitchen, laundry, and a huge living room. Perfect for in-laws or an au pair.

416 Tulip Trail is a short drive to Annapolis, Baltimore, and DC and a short idle to the scenic Severn River. Contact Brad Kappel for your private tour today.

THE DIGEST

🐶 Animal adoption fees waived

With Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control at full capacity, the organization is waiving adoption fees ($17 for dogs, $14 for cats). Adopters must still meet adoption requirements. Here are some animals you could bring home.

The end of Annapolis Go

As proved by Ted Lasso, McDonald’s chicken snack wraps, and the short but sweet time I was an only child, all good things come to an end. Now that the Hillman Garage is open again, Annapolis is putting Annapolis Go out to pasture. The transportation department is reviewing bids to relaunch a ride-share program in early fall but for now, your last day for uber-cheap rides (lowercase intentional) is July 17.

🧑‍🎨Artist needed: Westgate Circle

The Art in Public Places Commission needs an artist (or team) to make a sculpture for Westgate Circle. Here’s the skinny: It needs to be 20–30 high. You’ve got $150k (maybe $300k). And it should embody the theme of “unity”, representing the entire Annapolis community, not a specific aspect. Proposals are due by September 1.

📈 Sobering Stat

Anne Arundel and Annapolis PD have already investigated 16 homicides this year – the same number for the entirety of 2022. Last year however was an improvement on the trend line. 2021 saw 22 homicides. 2020 saw 21. Read more in the Capital Gazette. ($)

More ramps closed near Bay Bridge

We’ve all done it. Popped onto a side road to skip some bridge traffic. Well the jig is up. As part of a pilot program to reduce traffic on side roads for residents, SHA will close exits 30 & 32 from 10 AM on Thursdays to 6 PM on Sundays. Last week, SHA permanently closed exit 31. Say it with me. . . side roads aren’t for skipping traffic.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Market House lease renewed

The team that took over Market House in 2018 just extended the lease for another five years. Not everyone’s thrilled. Other City Dock business owners pay $40–75 per square foot in rent while the Market House team will pay just under $20. But, there is a provision in the lease requiring the operators to pay 2% of gross sales if said gross sales exceed $1.5 million.

According to the Capital, they never filed financial reports (because the city never asked) and didn’t know if sales ever hit that number.

While most lease renewals fly under the radar, this one stands out for two reasons. First, the City of Annapolis owns the Market House. Second, the partnership that operates Market House includes Jody Danek, Mayor Gavin Buckley’s longtime business partner.

It’s important to note that Mayor Buckley is not involved in the Market House partnership and he recused himself from negotiating the lease. ($)

Local author releases acclaimed first novel

Kate Myers is many cool things. Archaeology student, CollegeHumor & BuzzFeed writer, Front Doors of Annapolis Instagram account runner, and now, novelist. Likely to soon be a bestselling novelist. Kate’s first novel, Excavations, is out now and she’s on a nationwide book tour. This Saturday from 5–7 PM, Kate’s talking with another awesome local author, Natalie Franke, at Park Books in Severna Park. Grab tickets (and books) here.

Excavations is already making waves. Oprah Daily listed it as a Best Summer Vacation Read, Good Housekeeping named it one of the Best Summer Books of 2023, and a major studio has already bought the option to turn it into a TV series with an A-list actress. Kate’s definitely one of my most creative friends and without a doubt the wittiest. So while I haven’t read Excavations yet (I’ll get my copy at Park Books!), I’m confident everyone will love it.

📣 Speak Your Truth

The seventh annual Speak Your Truth is this Saturday from 7–10 PM at ArtFarm. It’s a powerful night of breaking the stigma of mental illness with words and art. You’ll hear poetry and comedy, see creative dance and burlesque, and meet some awesome community members. $15 tickets cover the cost of the event and anything extra goes to the Anne Arundel chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. 111 Chinquapin Round Rd #200, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Annapolis Blues final regular season game

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because they’re going to the playoffs. In their tremendous inaugural season, the Annapolis Blues have already clinched the #1 Mid-Atlantic conference seed in the NPSL (and home field advantage in the conference semifinal on 5/12). But before any of that, there’s one last regular season match against the Alexandria Reds this Sunday at 5 PM. Get your tickets and we’ll see you at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

CIVIL NEWS

🏠 New law aims to increase affordable housing supply

County Council passed a bill Monday that allows affordable housing developments to bypass school capacity limits. It’s a dual-purpose bill. One on hand, it aims to increase the county’s supply of affordable housing. On the other, it aims to decrease AACPS’ number of vacant classroom seats.

  • According to Council Chair Pete Smith, there’s room for about 16,000 more students at AACPS in any given year.

This bill gives the county flexibility to approve new affordable housing developments by considering the capacity of adjacent school districts. It will not exempt developments from infrastructure standards like sewage disposal, storm drainage, or water supplies. ($)

🧑‍⚕️County health officer confirmed

Anne Arundel County Council unanimously confirmed Tonii Gedin as our new Health Officer at Monday’s meeting. Tonii’s filled the role in an acting capacity since her predecessor Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman joined the state health department in March. Her resume also includes time as the county’s Deputy Health Officer of Public Health, Chief Quality Officer at Healthcare for the Homeless in Baltimore, and an ICU nurse.

City Council meeting

There is a City Council meeting at 7 PM Monday at City Hall. No agenda has been posted yet. Check back here for updates. The public is welcome to attend. Use this website to submit public testimony, watch online, and more. 160 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401.
