Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop – the newsletter equivalent of perfectly timing your steps when boarding an escalator.

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Happy birthday to Dana!

Annapolis Blues win first-ever match 🦀

It was just a friendly (aka exhibition match), but the Annapolis Blues won 3–0 in front of 3,915 fans on Wednesday — the first time they ever played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The semi-pro Blues are back at Memorial Stadium for the true home opener June 3 against FC Frederick. In the meanwhile, they’ve got three away games in a row. Click here to learn more about the Blues. Game tickets start at just $8 for groups.

⚽️ Must watch: Mayor Gavin Buckley made a Ted Lasso-inspired video with the Blues to encourage attendance. Football is life!

A Hillman Garage update

Annapolis officials said for months that the Hillman Garage rebuild was on schedule. We heard a lot of “I’ll believe that when I see it” and “Yeah right, construction’s never on time.” Well, skeptics, believe it. The brand spankin’ new, solar-powered, elevators-working, non-crumbling Hillman Garage opens next month. Just in time for summer.

🚗 Traffic alert: St. John’s College graduation

St. John’s College is graduating over 120 seniors during its 231st commencement ceremony on Sunday. Two roads will be closed from 10:30 AM–12:30 PM: College Ave between King George St and St. John’s St and Prince George St between Maryland Ave and College Ave.

AACPS teachers are gettin’ paid 💰️

Ever since starting the job, AACPS superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell has called AACPS teacher pay embarrassing, shameful, and lots of other adjectives it really wouldn’t appreciate if it had feelings. And he’s walking the walk. In the wake of a major request to increase the budget next year to bump pay, AACPS is giving all employees a bonus. All employees who have worked more than 20 hours a week since January 1 will get a $1,000 check. The bonus will be paid from savings accrued through vacancies across the school system and from federal ESSER funds.

Related: AACPS decided Wednesday that even though food costs are rising left and right, it’s going to leave meal prices at the same level they’ve been for 8 years. That means breakfast is $1.50, elementary school lunches are $2.75, and secondary school lunches are $3.00. A good old carton of milk is still 55 cents.

Anne Arundel’s newest bulk grocer

BD Provisions in Severna Park is celebrating its official grand opening with a ribbon cutting today. Stop by 844 Ritchie Highway Suite 101, Severna Park, MD 21146 at 10 AM to see what all the hype’s about. Spoiler alert: It’s the buckeye popcorn. Here’s how BD works. They have hundreds of loose, bulk foods in cool barrels. They also have oils & vinegars, coffees and teas, and home products. You scoop out however much you want (try an ounce or stock up with 5 pounds). Weigh your goods, pay, and you’re good to go.

It’s old school in the best way possible and I find it a very fun way to shop. Ask the BD staff for a sample of anything and they’ll be happy to make it happen.

Coffee and flowers, a Mother’s Day match

Dandelions Flower Stand is stoked to open a special pop-up shop at Rise Up Coffee Parole for Mother’s Day. For the uninitiated, Dandelions operates a self-serve flower stand at Bread and Butter Kitchen in Eastport. They also take custom orders. You can even order them on DoorDash! Rise Up Parole is located at 2042 Somerville Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401. Dandelions will be there through Mother’s Day. Pro tip: Moms drink free at Rise Up on Mother’s Day.

High Fashion, Hot Cars, and a Good Cause

June 8 is Fashion Week in Annapolis. We don’t have haute couture designers, international supermodels, or A-list celebrities. But we do have Fashion for a Cause.

That’s when over a dozen community models walk the runway wearing styles from local stores on Main Street and Annapolis Town Center to raise money for Hospice of the Chesapeake’s Chesapeake Kids program.

Fashion for a Cause supports:

  • Group and individual grief counseling for children and teens

  • Camp Nabi grief camp for kids

  • Pediatric hospice care that provides comfort and support for children living with life-limiting illness

  • And more

Join us for an evening of fashion, food, and fun on June 8 at Porsche Annapolis on Hudson Street. Individual tickets ($150) are available until May 25. Sponsorships are also available.

What’s Happenin’

Paca Garden Plant Sale

Every year, Historic Annapolis volunteers personally raise over 8,000 plants to raise money that supports the William Paca Garden and Historic Annapolis. Those plants are on sale this weekend at the Paca Garden from 10 AM–4 PM Saturday and 12–4 PM Sunday. You’ll find perennial offerings like white turtlehead, Virginia bluebells, and bleeding heart; hostas and woodland phlox; annuals like cockscomb, salvia, and zinnias; and a whole lot more. Check out the online catalog!

The hardest road race this side of the Mississippi River

I hope you’ve been training. I hope your head game is as good as your calf game. I hope you’ve got the best one-song playlist ever. Because the Eastport 0.05K is this Saturday and simply put, it’s the athletic event of the year. For the uninitiated, that is not a typo. Runners start on the Annapolis side of the Eastport Bridge then run to Eastport; that’s about 1,000 feet. Slow runners may need a full five minutes to complete the race (and yes, there’s a prize for being slowest).

The race starts at the crack o’ noon Saturday (5/13) rain or shine. Registration starts at 9:30 AM race morning at Long & Foster by the bridge – 320 6th St, Annapolis, MD 21403.

🚗Traffic impact: The Eastport Bridge will be closed to traffic for 30–40 minutes starting a few minutes before the run.

Carnival at the Mall 🎪

There are lots of flashing lights at loud noises off Generals Highway and it’s not the car behind you is flashing their high beams and honking because you’re learning new moves on TikTok and the light’s been green for 10 seconds. The Carnival is set up in the Annapolis Mall parking lot (near the old Sears) until May 21 and is open 5–10 PM Mon-Thurs, 5–11 PM Friday, 1–11 PM Saturday, and 1–10 PM Sunday. Tickets start at $1 each (3–5 tickets per ride) or grab an unlimited ride wristband for $25 ($30 on weekends).
