SJC donates a ton of food (literally), Capital Gazette shooting wreath laying...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop – the newsletter you can read faster than Chick-fil-A nugget trays disappear at high school graduation parties.

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Happy birthday to Mary Ellen Forte 🎂🥳

The party so popular you can only buy 4 tickets

Every year that passes where I don’t throw in the towel and get a “real” job, Naptown Scoop hosts a party. We get our best advertisers (like Brad Kappel) to sponsor it. We hire Ken’s Creative Kitchen to cook amazing food. And then we donate whatever money is leftover to an awesome nonprofit.

This year we’re donating to Charting Careers, a nonprofit breaking the cycle of poverty one kid at a time.

Tickets went on sale last week and we sold so many I had to limit orders to four tickets so everyone has a chance to come. The party’s August 18 from 6:30–9:30 PM. Get tickets before they’re gone.

THE DIGEST

🍎 Johnnies donate a ton of food (literally)

Back in March, three St. John’s College students showed up at the Annapolis Light House Homeless Prevention Center to donate some food. Since then, St. John’s has donated 2,539 pounds of food to the Light House. How? The Food Recovery Network (FRN).

FRN is a national organization that encourages students to save uneaten dining hall food, package it up, and deliver it to local hunger-fighting partners. A chapter started at St. John’s years ago but fell by the wayside – mostly due to the pandemic. Thanks to the efforts of Johnnie Madelyn Minor, the program is going strong again.

Johnnies Alayna Raymond and Luke Briner prepare donations.

🧑‍⚕️ New CMO at Hospice of the Chesapeake

At most organizations, CMO means Chief Marketing Officer; at Hospice of the Chesapeake, CMO = Chief Medical Officer. Hospice of the Chesapeake announced Dr. Marny Fetzer as its new CMO last week. Dr. Fetzer currently holds a director-level position in palliative care (aka hospice care) at Ascension Health in Mount Prospect, IL. As a leading expert in the field, Dr. Fetzer has published and presented extensively over the last 20 years. She is also pursuing an MBA from Umass Amherst. Dr. Fetzer will join the Hospice of the Chesapeake team in July.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🥡 Fare thee well, Canton

When Charles Wong opened The Canton in West Annapolis in the early 60s, it was the only Chinese restaurant in Annapolis. It stayed that way for years. 63 years (and four generations of Wongs) later, The Canton is closing as co-owners Lisa and Benjamin Wong, Charles’ son and his wife, are retiring. The last day to get your favorite Peking duck is Wednesday. To the Wong family: thank you for starting, growing, and stewarding an Annapolis icon. 11 Ridgely Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Where is HERE going?

HERE. a pop-up shop’s summer shop is never far behind the summer solstice. And seeing as that was last Wednesday, it’s a good thing owner El Lunay just announced her summer pop-up. Summer Sea Zen at HERE. a pop-up shop will be open daily at 4 Church Circle from July 14–31 (same spot as last time). El features dozens and dozens of local artists and creators in the store so if you love cool stuff and shopping local, you won’t want to miss this.

Yoga Factory teacher spotlight: Sarah Kaitz

After my third child, I begrudgingly returned to the gym and fell into the same boring routine I'd done for decades. Then a friend told me about hot yoga. Once I gathered the courage to try, it was love at first asana.

It helped my lifelong spine issues and poor posture while I gained childlike flexibility. Even better were the internal benefits. I found freedom in my body and mind to focus on a healthier lifestyle.

Hot yoga really is a life-changing practice. I love being able to share the love and see positive changes in my students.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

📆 The week ahead

Wreath laying at Guardians Memorial. A remembrance ceremony to honor the five-year anniversary of the Capital Gazette mass shooting in which Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, and Wendi Winters were killed by a madman with a grudge against the newspaper. 9:30 AM Wednesday at the intersection of Compromise and Newman Streets.

Forward Run Club. What started as a small meetup to run and drink beer (not simultaneously) is now a full-fledged permitted event with so many runners it sometimes requires road closures. But it’s still free and open to all pace levels. Just show up at Forward Brewing at 6 PM Wednesday. 418 Fourth St, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Dinner Under the Stars. Eat, dance, and/or play pickleball in the middle of a closed West Street between Calvert St and Church Circle. Moxie Blues Band has the tunes this week. 6–10 PM Wednesday.

Tides and Tunes. The quintessential Annapolis concert series. The Grilled Lincolns take the stage at the Annapolis Maritime Museum Thursday from 7–9 PM. Free with a suggested donation. 723 Second St, Annapolis, MD 21403.
