Good morning, Annapolis. The American Physical Society is designating the Naval Academy as a historic site in honor of Albert A. Michelson. While teaching at the Academy in 1879, Michelson measured the speed of light with 200 times more accuracy than the previously accepted value. The speed of light, 671 million mph, is roughly equivalent to how fast teenagers disappear when it’s time to clean up after dinner.

Our favorite solar eclipse pics 📸

Turn aroooound, every now and then we get a little bit restless and have to collect some of the best pics from photographers around town. And by “every now and then,” we mean when there’s a (partial) solar eclipse overhead like Monday. Even though we weren’t in the path of totality, the moon still covered about 88% of the sun.

We hope you enjoyed it because the next time you’ll see this is 2044. Until then, relive it through these pics from your fellow readers.

Coveted Large Lot in Linstead

This Nantucket-style Cape Cod home is truly one of a kind in our area. It’s located uniquely overlooking Sullivan Cove – perfect to capture the winter water views. The 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home combines cottage charm with modern amenities.

Its main level features an all-white kitchen and an adjoining dining area which flows into the living room with a cozy fireplace. Rounding off the main level are two spacious bedrooms and a shared hall bath. There are two additional bedrooms upstairs.

One of the home’s true highlights are its large windows, not only offering a view of the backyard and play area, but also flooding natural light into the lower level.  The house is located in the coveted Linstead on the Severn community – one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Annapolis.

CIVIL NEWS

Mayor Buckley presents FY25 budget

Guess what. Under Mayor Gavin Buckley’s proposed FY25 budget, property taxes aren’t going up. So how much does it cost to run our beautiful city? About $188 million. For perspective, last year’s budget was $184 million but the city may end up spending about $13 million less. Ben Franklin would be proud. What’s in the new budget?

  • A new department called the Office of Central Services which combines purchasing, facilities, and fleet operations.

  • Funding for a new fireboat. The current one is 17 years old and annual repair bills were climbing to around $200k.

  • A 5% increase in police funding which accounts for about 25% of Annapolis’ annual spending.

  • And much more. Read the Capital Gazette summary or the full 112-page document.

Now what? City Council has until June 30 to pass a budget. The Finance Committee will meet regularly for the next month and several public work sessions are scheduled. And you can provide your feedback right here. ($)

A new approach to reading

AACPS recently adopted a program known as Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts. It’s a literacy curriculum for the K-5 crowd, though there might be a lot of questions about it given how new it is: Why the shift in curriculum? What are the tenets of the curriculum? What’s the rollout plan? The Board of Ed has a public workshop with Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell this Monday at 6 PM for these and other questions. Attend in person in the Board Room of the Parham Building at 2644 Riva Road or watch live on AACPS-TV or AACPS YouTube.
