State of the County, Shop Small Holiday Crawl, Giving Tuesday...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. We have a mistake to own up to this morning. Navy can technically become bowl-eligible (by winning 6 games) if they beat Army on December 9. But since bowl matchups are set the Sunday before that game, it won’t matter. Sorry for getting your hopes up.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • State of the County reminder

  • Shop Small Holiday Crawl

  • Giving Tuesday

Let’s get to it.

Giving Tuesday: Scoop’s Picks

Time for some straight talk. Everyone is competing for your hard-earned dollars today. And we don’t want to steal anyone’s philanthropic thunder, but if you don’t have anywhere to give, we’d like to highlight two causes – one local and one pretty far away but with a local twist.

âš“ Local: Annapolis Hope. Scoop is leading the charge to remove the burden of housing for the Mireles family who lost their father and breadwinner to Annapolis’ deadliest mass shooting since 2018. We’re raising $247,000 by August and have already raised over $66,000.

Right now, the Brian & Patricia Giese Foundation is matching $25,000 in donations so when you donate $1, it’s like you’re donating $2. Visit annapolishope.com to help and learn more.

🇺🇦 Not so local but still local: Shelter the Children. This sounds crazy, but instead of the usual school problems (your crush doesn’t like you back, Tommy has Lunchables and you don’t, etc.), kids in Ukraine are worried about Russian air raids.

Sozo Charities is raising $53,000 to build a military-grade bomb shelter for Bright Life School in Kyiv. We’re highlighting this because of Kelly and Vicki Hoodikoff’s involvement with Sozo Charities. When they aren’t living in Ukraine representing Sozo Charities, the Hoodikoffs call Annapolis home. 🎄Naptown Scoop's First-Ever Holly Jolliest Home Contest🎄

Calling all Clark Griswolds. We’re hosting Naptown Scoop’s First-Ever Holly Jolliest Home Contest. And since we love an absurdly long acronym, we call it NSFEHJHC for short.

The lucky winner gets a $400 gift card to the Capital Hotel, a $50 gift card to Vida Taco Bar, and a $50 gift card to the Parley Room – all conveniently located in the same building on State Circle/Main Street. You’ll probably need a staycation after the holidays anyway.

Enter here through December 14. Check those lightbulbs and grab your ladder. We’ll announce the winner on December 18. 💡🪜

LOCAL BUSINESS

PSA: Shop Local this Holiday Season 🛍️

DYK, the Shop Small Holiday Crawl is a social initiative to encourage our community to shop small and local this holiday season? Participating locations are:

  • Wildberry’s Vintage Christmas Markets (they’re also the crawl organizer)

  • Heroes Holiday Market

  • HERE. a pop-up shop

You can win one of 12 custom tote bags. Just go to any spot listed above, snap a pic of your locally-made haul, and post it publicly on Instagram with #ShopSmallHolidayCrawl2023. Every post enters you into a drawing. Totes are also for sale online. All proceeds support Wildberry Farm’s new Small Business Fund.

And, here are 2 other ways you can get awesome gifts and support local businesses this holiday season.

Local Coast is hosting a market on Sunday (12/3) at 537 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd in Severna Park from 10 AM-4 PM. Participating vendors joining Local Coast include: Lila Pants, Parlay Pickleball, Gray Wolf Spirits, Kimberly James Jewelry, and Wishlist Boutique.

Maryland Avenue & State Circle Holiday Open House on Friday (12/1) from 6-9 PM. Small Businesses on Maryland Avenue have had an especially tough time this year. Mango & Main even wrote a You’ve Got Mail-style plea (incredible movie, btw).

So, please get out and shop local, ya filthy animals. Midnight Madness is the perfect chance to do it on 12/7, 12/14, and 12/21.

Why are we sharing this? The second half of Scoop’s mission statement is to support local businesses and content creators. And of our 36 advertising clients, 32 are small, locally-owned businesses.
