🍦Forecast: Blue (Angel) Skies

Maryland Seafood Festival, Paca plant sale, Willows approved...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop – the newsletter equivalent of being greeted with a glass of 2006 Krug and a bowl of warm nuts when boarding a flight. We’re first class all the way, baby.

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon

This week’s forecast: Blue (Angel) skies and American Pride

This is the best week of the year. Why? Two words – Blue Angels.

The Navy’s elite flight demonstration squad will perform its signature show over Annapolis Wednesday. Literally thousands of boats will anchor in the harbor and on the Severn to witness the amazing aerial acrobatics.

We have all the info you need (where to watch, boating restrictions, and timing) in our Ultimate Commissioning Week Guide. The best place to watch is 100% on the water so if you haven’t already texted every one of your friends with a boat, you better get on that.

Pro tip: The Blues practice for the show on Tuesday and it’s just as fun as Wednesday.

Greater Annapolis area dominates lax championships

Four Annapolis-area high school lacrosse teams are going to their respective state championships this week. Both Broadneck’s girls and boys teams will fight for ultimate Class 4A glory. The girls punched their ticket with a 17–4 rout of North County over the weekend. On the other hand, the Broadneck boys eeked out a 9–8 overtime win over Urbana to claim their spot. On the 3A side of things, the roles were reversed. Severna Park’s girls beat Westminster in a 13–12 overtime comeback and Severna Park’s boys embarrassed Chopticon 23–4. And it could have been worse. The Falcons were up 20–2 at halftime on just 21 shots.

All four teams will play in their respective state final games at Stevenson University in Owings Mills this week. ($)

Income-restricted community on Forest Drive gets approved

The Annapolis Planning Commission voted 4-2 Thursday to approve plans for The Willows after months of bureaucratic delays. Rents in the 58-unit community will be tiered based on income. No residents can earn more than 50% of the Baltimore area’s median income – currently $81,300 for a single person. Most of the apartments will go to families earning no more than 30% of the median income.

The Willows site is next to American Legion Post #141 on Forest Drive. Construction will begin in the next six months. ($)

Peake Social adds lacrosse

On the second episode of Naptown Scoop’s podcast, Peake Social co-founder Jeremiah Batucan could barely remember all of Peake Social’s sports leagues because they have so many. It just got even harder. The locally-owned adult sports league company has added 6 on 6 women’s lacrosse. Faceoffs start June 18 and all are welcome no matter how long it’s been since the last time you laced up.
