Six Things to Teach Your Kids About Money
It’s never too early to teach your children about money. Starting them off on the right financial foot may be one of the best things you can do for them. Scarborough helps clients every day with their financial planning needs. Many client situations are complex – there’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution.
Follow these six lessons if you want to help teach a young person solid financial basics:
1. Pay yourself first.
2. Save early, save often.
3. Pay off your credit card every month.
4. Delay gratification.
5. Buy whatever kind of car you want, but get a good, used one.
6. Invest in yourself.
There are several ways to begin the conversation with kids about money and get them started on their way to better financial habits. And while getting them to eat their greens might be a struggle, hopefully, the ideas above will make discussions about money a little easier. Contact Scarborough Capital Management to see how we can help.

Naval Academy graduation is today

Yesterday we mentioned this because of traffic. Today we’re sharing some fun facts:
🎓️ 1,049 young men and women will graduate today – 751 men and 298 women.
⚓️ 776 will become Navy Ensigns. They’ll wear white. 258 will become Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenants. They’ll wear black.
🏆️ Owen Michael O’Malley of Pittsburgh, PA is the top graduate in the class. Major = Robotics and Control Engineering.
🎙️ Vice President JD Vance will give the principal speech.
🛩️ The Blue Angels will fly over Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 10:04 AM.

P.S. Graduation is only open to invited guests.
Confusion surrounds AACPS policy over honors at graduations 🎓
A shadow is looming over high-achieving students (and their parents). An AACPS policy allows only stoles, cords, and medals awarded by AACPS, the State of Maryland, or the U.S. Armed Forces to be worn at graduation. Items from outside organizations, including clubs and honor societies like National Honor Society, may only be worn at senior or athletic awards events. The policy has caused confusion among students and families.
South River parent Sydney Kucner started a petition urging the school system to allow academic and club honors at graduation, arguing it would boost student pride and motivate underclassmen to strive for similar recognition. In the 5 days it’s been online, it has almost 1,500 signatures. ($)
Can an RV park avoid environmental impact? 🌳
Imagine this: You want to get away from the hustle and bustle of society. So you pack up the RV and escape to a secluded spot where no emails will interrupt your coffee and your morning commute can’t get ruined by fender benders because it’s a hike in the woods.
But can this getaway be as green as it sounds? Yes, according to NSA (Naval Support Activity) Annapolis. It released a report earlier this month saying a proposed RV park with space for 35–50 vehicles would have “minimal effects” on the environment. This contradicts the concerns that local residents expressed at public hearings when the plan was announced. The report describes two options — one at Greenbury Point and one at North Severn Complex — both of which require some amount of deforestation. Environmental groups like Greenbury Point Biodiversity Project and Severn River Association oppose the project.
The Navy has scheduled a virtual public meeting to discuss the environmental assessment on June 5 at 5:30 PM. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS
Foodie Friday: Cookout Szn
We don’t care if it’s only in the 60s most of Memorial Day Weekend. We. Are. Grilling. Or, at least enjoying the fruits (or meats?) of others’ labors like . . .
🍔 Chessie's Wharf | 609 Melvin Ave | Take our word for it. The Chessie Burger is 🔥
🌭 Pip’s | 118 Dock St | Grab yourself one of the best specialty hot dogs or sausages around. We recommend the Sweet Italian Sausage. Kids will love their Corn Dogs. Oh, and vegetarians welcome. Try their Veggie Dog, a flavorful vegan option.
🦀🍔 Federal House Bar & Grille | 22 Market Space | We want a burger but make it Maryland style. Fed House’s Crabby Patty delivers with a mouth-watering Angus Beef Burger topped with an onion ring halo + crab dip.
🍔 The Choptank | 110 Compromise Street | Ryan here. I normally don’t add to Lauren’s Foodie Friday column but the burger at Choptank is too good to leave it off the list and most people think Seafood when they hear choptank.

Blue Heron Property Services specializes in cleaning premium hardwoods like ipe and many more using a soft wash method that safely restores rich color and natural beauty. Hosting a summer bash or just want to enjoy your coffee on a clean surface? It’s time to make your deck look brand new again.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
What to know for Memorial Day 🇺🇸
Well, we’ve finally made it: We’re headed into a three-day weekend and the unofficial start of summer. But Memorial Day is about more than barbecues and beach trips. It’s a day to remember our fallen service members. We hope you enjoy a safe, healthy long weekend, and hope it’s a time of reflection and gratitude.
That said, there are some things you should know. Remember that all county and city offices are closed on Memorial Day, as are museums like the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum and the USNA Museum. The Pip Moyer Rec Center and Stanton Centers are also closed. Waste collection typically on Monday happens Tuesday, and Tuesday collection happens Wednesday.
Because we all live close to the Bay Bridge, remember that traffic will be terrible. No, really. 340,000 vehicles cross on Memorial Day weekend. MDOT recommends traveling in the early morning or at night. See specific times of anticipated high traffic, or visit the Bay Bridge website to check the current status of traffic.
The Annapolis Memorial Day Parade is Monday at 10 AM. The parade steps off at the intersection of Amos Garrett Boulevard and West Street. It follows a route down West Street, around Church Circle to the end of Main Street. A Memorial Day ceremony will follow at 11:30 AM at the Fleet Reserve Club.
As part of Taps Across America, the Maryland Defense Force Band will play taps at City Dock at 3 PM.
