THE DIGEST

Morabito’s Give Back Day 🦷

This will put a big toothy smile on your face: Morabito Family Dentistry held a Give Back Day this weekend to provide care to people without insurance, and in one day, their 9 providers and 30 volunteers helped over 80 people with $105K of dentistry provided. That’s a total of 132 fillings, 53 extractions, and 59 cleanings done. This was an event in collaboration with the Little Yellow Bird Foundation, which conducts missions to provide dental and medical care to underserved communities around the world. This makes us mighty proud to be advertising partners with the Morabitos!

Admiral Cleaners' Call for Coats 🧥

Admiral Cleaners is on a "warm" mission—collecting, cleaning, and delivering coats to thousands in need this winter. From now through November, donate your gently used or outgrown coats at any of Admiral's four locations. Pick-up and delivery customers may leave coats in a marked bag for their driver. Admiral Cleaners also provides collection boxes for businesses, schools, or others who wish to help. The “Call for Coats” campaign has run for 30+ years, distributing 100,000 coats to local families in need.

Free holiday parking 🚙

Very few of us have the privilege of doing our holiday shopping via reindeer-drawn sleigh. Fortunately, City officials are putting themselves on everyone’s nice list by bringing back the tradition of free holiday parking between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. You can get 2 hours at metered/kiosk spaces or 1 hour at the Hillman Garage using the ParkMobile app. There is no enforcement of meters on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Still Singing Poetry Collection & Reading by 6 Local Poets ✍️ 📖

Celebrate the publication of Still Singing: Six Women Poets on October 26 at 6 PM. Old Fox Books & Coffeehouse (35 Maryland Avenue) will host the free event (no reservations needed). Still Singing follows an inaugural poetry book, The Song In the Room, which premiered the poetry of six women: Janice F. Booth, Meg Robinson, Dona B. Rudderow, Natalie Canavor, Sandy Jackson Cohen, and Carole Falk. The six Annapolis women will read their work and engage in a conversation with the audience about poetry’s place in our world. Internationally known poet and Annapolitan Grace Cavalieri will MC. Cavalieri, Maryland Poet Laureate from 2018–2023, wrote the Preface for Still Singing.

New chapter, new name for Banneker-Douglass Museum 🏫

On November 1, the Banneker-Douglass Museum will join with the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC) to celebrate and honor the legacy of Harriet Tubman by renaming the Museum The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum (BDTM). Poet and activist Nikki Giovanni will be on hand to help commemorate the day, which coincides with the 160th anniversary of Maryland’s Emancipation Day, when slavery was outlawed in our state.

“This change is not merely symbolic,” says Chanel Compton-Johnson, executive director of both the MHAAC and the Museum, but will align the Museum’s roots in protest and resilience with Tubman’s unwavering spirit of leadership and service.

Virtual attendance is encouraged, as the event will be live-streamed on the Museum’s YouTube and Facebook pages beginning at noon on November 1.
