THE DIGEST
$2 million → 73 nonprofits
Anne Arundel County is providing grants to 73 local nonprofits through the Anne Arundel County Community Support Grant (CSG) Program. The grants range between $10–50K and were included in this year’s budget the County Council approved last month. Recipients include Arundel House of Hope, Chesapeake Arts Center, HOPE For All Inc., The Light House, and many more.
Bay health: C+ 🐟
How do you feel when the kids get a C+ grade on a homework assignment? It’s not the worst grade, but it’s not the best either, right? That’s the grade the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science gave the Chesapeake Bay for its ecological health. The C+ reflects factors like aquatic grasses, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient content. Even though a C+ won’t get the Bay any fancy Latin words on its degree, researchers are still optimistic because this is the highest the bay has scored in 20 years. That means restoration efforts are making a difference, even if there’s still a lot of work left to be done — and a lot of pollution that still needs to be kept out of the water. ($)

A MESSAGE FROM ST. ANNE’S SCHOOL
While teachers certainly deserve a break and rest during the summer months (I think we can all agree that they’ve more than earned it!), many St. Anne’s School educators use this time “off” to engage in professional development opportunities to further their own learning, that in turn make them better teachers during the school year.
This summer, our educators are engaging in:
Mind/Brain education training through the Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning, a partnership the School has held for the last 3 years
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) training
Structured Literacy and Orton Gillingham training
Workshops at The Educator Summit
Elevating their knowledge of our Social Curriculum by attending training for Responsive Classroom and Developmental Designs
That is lifelong learning in action! St. Anne’s School offers research-supported learning at each stage…from our youngest students all the way up to our teachers. Find out more about what makes our teachers standout and jumpstart your child’s love for lifelong learning today.

CIVIL NEWS
Maryland third grade intervention 🏫 📖
The Maryland State Board of Education is considering a policy that would make third graders (a pivotal time for literacy education) repeat the year if they can’t read at grade level by the end of the year. This is likely to generate lots of opinions. And that’s good because the department is asking for public feedback on the draft policy before presenting it to the state BOE on July 23. If adopted, the policy would be one of several major changes to early childhood education, a primary focus of the state’s multibillion-dollar education reform plan, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. So get your thoughts in by July 19!
To note: Some students could be exempt, such as those already held back before, those who received two years of reading interventions, or students with learning disabilities who have an individualized education program (IEP). ($)
