State of the County, why we made the candle, meet the Boathouse...

Good morning, Annapolis. No clever intro today. This Scoop’s a long one.

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Happy birthday to a lovely member of Scoop’s social media team, Ally Rabbitt! 🎂

Why we’re selling candles with Annapolis Candle

I made an accidental discovery on June 10, 2022. Two days earlier, Sailor Oyster Bar suffered a terrible fire. We were about to launch a shirt – a cool but not earth-shattering design. I wanted to make a few dollars to keep the lights on. Then I had a better idea.

What if the shirts raised money for Sailor’s employees?

So we told the story, sold over 800 shirts, and wrote a $6,500 check to Sailor’s team.

Last Christmas, we did something similar with Annapolis Candle. Lee Snead designed the jar, Annapolis Candle crafted a scent, and we marketed it. Boom. $8,400 for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank.

This Christmas, we created a new candle for Annapolis Hope – a community fundraiser to keep victims of Annapolis’ deadliest shooting since 2018 in their home. Our goal is $15,000.

We’re about 10% of the way there. Can you help us get there? The candle smells great, is made locally, and you can order one (or 12) right here.

A huge thank you ✉️

2023 was another great year. I helped many families make Annapolis their new home and was fortunate enough to be recognized by Sotheby's as a Worldwide Top 100 Real Estate Agent.

I'm incredibly grateful for Annapolis' continued support which led to another record-breaking year. For me, record-breaking sales means record-breaking giving back, as well. I'm proud to support organizations like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Annapolis Maritime Museum.

In addition to sponsoring Bands in the Sand, Boatyard Beach Bash, and increased support of the Naptown Scoop Anniversary Party, I was also able to support the DeCesaris Prout Cancer Foundation's Jingle Bell Run last weekend.

Let's make 2024 even better than 2023. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

— Sincerely, Brad Kappel

ICYMI: EYC Lights Parade Guide

The Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade is Saturday and it’s looking like a great night for it. 2021 was canceled for foul weather and 2022 was colder than the Abominable Snowman’s beard. This Saturday should be around 50ºF with light winds. If you’ve never been, or even if you have, be sure to check out our Insider’s Guide.

Historic Annapolis maintains elite accreditation

American Alliance of Museums accreditation is the highest national recognition a museum can get. You have to get reviewed every 10 years and Historic Annapolis just got its latest renewal confirmation; it’s held the status since 1980. If you haven’t visited the Museum of Historic Annapolis at 99 Main Street, consider this a sign. It’s an awesome journey through Annapolis’ history.

Tomorrow is one of the most fun nights of the year downtown. Shops stay open late, serve refreshments (some with alcohol), and the Alpaca International store on Main Street brings in real alpacas. Participating locations: West Street, Maryland Avenue, Main Street, State Circle, Market Space, and Dock Street.

Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore are inviting you over. Well, not just you. Everyone’s welcome. The annual public open house at the Government House is Saturday (12/9) from 10 AM–1 PM. Check out the decorations and eat homemade cookies. It’s that huge colonial mansion off Church Circle but if you need the address try 110 State Cir, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Pro tip: Parking at the nearby Calvert Street Garage is free on weekends.

If at first you don’t succeed. . .

Try four more times. It worked for Allan Terhune. He recently returned from Chile with a gold trophy from the Pan American Games – often considered a warmup for the Olympics. The Annapolitan professional sailor and his crew won 5 of the games’ 10 races. He’d missed qualifying for the previous four games. Congratulations, Allan!
