Santa Speedo Run, What's Parijita Bastola up to now...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Can’t think of anything to get your friend for Christmas? Get them a birthday shoutout in the Scoop. It only takes 3 referrals.

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon, Rebecca Kraybill, & Lauren Burke Meyer

P.S. Happy birthday to Erin McNaboe and the ice cream Wizard of Annapolis, Mark Cohen! 🎂 And happy early birthday to Kevin Dell’Oro, our great partner over at Lawn Doctor.

Let’s close it off right 🎆

2023 – what a year! We've come so far since 2020. So let's end it on a high note at The Choptank's Exclusive New Year's Gold Party!

The rooftop party starts at 8 PM and goes all night long. Your all-inclusive ticket includes an open bar and champagne at midnight, bottomless espresso martinis (gotta stay awake somehow), a buffet with The Choptank’s most popular dishes, and the best view of the fireworks in the whole town.

The Gold Party has everything you need to close 2023 in incredible style. And we even negotiated a special deal for all Scoop readers to get 10% off using the code SCOOP. Click here to get the exclusive discount.

THE DIGEST

Greenbury Point is now protected by law

Thanks to a bit of language in the National Defense Authorization Act that says, “The Secretary of the Navy may not modify or restrict public access to the Greenbury Point Conservation Area at Naval Support Activity Annapolis, Maryland” it’s unlikely that we’ll see a golf course on Greenbury Point any time soon. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin as well as Representative John Sarbanes added the provision to the bill.

The only exceptions to the above language are temporary restrictions for public safety and if the Navy leases or transfers Greenbury Point to another public entity. Which begs the question. Does a public golf course count as modifying or restricting public access? ($)

Navy Football Podcast breaks down Army-Navy

Sadly, the best time of the year, Navy football season, is now over. That means it’s time for one final game recap with Bill Wagner, Keenan Reynolds, Eric Kettani, and Chris Servello. They’re also joined by Mike James from the Mid Report. Along with analyzing Navy’s final bout against Army, they also touched on the state of the program and what’s next. Check it out. It’s a 36-minute listen.

And even though football’s over, we still have a bunch of home basketball games and lacrosse in the spring. To that I say GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY.

Speaking of those other sports, that’s what our Anchors Aweigh Podcast is all about. In today’s episode, Bill Wagner and Pete Medhurst put the spotlight on Navy swimming & diving, which just swept the annual star meet. Check that out here. It’s a 53-minute listen.

What’s Parijita Bastola been up to?

Turns out quite a lot. The 2022 Severna Park High School graduate and The Voice semifinalist is deep in classes at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. When she’s not touring on weekends, she’s working on a new album to be released in 2024. And like many 18-year-olds, she’s making time for friends and a boyfriend she met on The Voice. We hope to see you around Annapolis during winter break, Parijita! ($)

AACPS gets ⭐⭐⭐+ ratings

The report card for AACPS is looking good. 90% of AACPS schools earned 3 or more stars on the Maryland Report Card’s 5-star scale for the last school year. Annapolis schools shined especially bright; 5 of the 9 schools that improved are here. Annapolis Elementary earned the most improved award with a 20% more points than last year. Superintendent Bedell said he believes even more schools will do better next year. And for anyone keeping track, what Dr. Bedell says usually happens.

The American Athletic Conference announced the conference matchups for its 14 member schools this week. Each team will play eight conference games – four home and four away. Navy will face Charlotte, Memphis, Temple, and Tulane at home and UAB, East Carolina, Rice, and South Florida on the road. The full schedule will be announced in February.

Army is joining the conference this year but one condition of that was that the Army-Navy game is a non-conference matchup. And on that note, GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!

Upcoming games & matches

Men's Basketball (2-6)
12/17 vs. Washington | 1 PM
