THE DIGEST

LSO celebrates 20th season

The Londontowne Symphony Orchestra is celebrating 20 years. You can join the celebration with a concert of classics. First, it’s the overture to Rossini’s Cinderella (no pumpkins here). Then, local pianist William Bloomquist performs Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Finally, catch Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. It all goes down on Sunday 9/24 at Maryland Hall. Get tickets for $25. Unless you’re a student. Then you can go for free.

Charting Careers 🤝 Forward Brewing

Beer. Food. Youth empowerment. Forward Brewing brings the holy trifecta of fun with a happy hour to support Charting Careers. September 19 from 5–7 PM, 15% of all Forward sales will support Charting Careers so drink up. 418 Fourth St, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Charting Careers was the beneficiary of Scoop’s 3rd-anniversary party. We ❤️ this local nonprofit that’s inspiring youth in underserved Annapolis communities to discover their power and reach their goals.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Meet me at the fair

Cotton candy, funnel cake, hay . . . pig squeals. Ah, the sights, sounds, and flavors of the fair. The 71st Anne Arundel County Fair starts Thursday and there are 5 jam-packed days of fun.

The basics:
🕙 Wednesday & Thursday 5–10 PM | Friday 5–11 PM | Saturday 9 AM–11 PM | Sunday 9 AM–8 PM

🎟️ Tickets are $10+ for ages 10+ (Anyone younger is free with a paying adult). Click here to buy in advance.

The fun:
There’s a lot going on at the fair. You can either read the 84-page exhibitor catalog or our quick summary below:

You want music → Don’t miss Aaron Hawkins (Friday at 5 PM), The NoWhere Men (Saturday at 5 & 6 PM), Anna J. Stamato (Sunday at 1, 1:30 & 4 PM), and more.

You want food → Food trucks and vendors galore. Because anything can be deep-fried if you set your mind to it. . .

You want to scream → Carnival games and rides await. Not included with admission. Life pro tip: Spend the money for the unlimited ride wristband. It only comes once a year. . .

You want to see animals → There are pig races daily, a sheep show Saturday at 9 AM, and a 4-H livestock auction Saturday 7 PM.

You want to see Best-in-Show → Who will bake the best cake? Who will grow the biggest pumpkin? Ribbons are awarded 4 PM Saturday.

You want to see a contest you’ll only see at the fair → The antique tractor pull starts at noon on Saturday (9/16). The garden tractor pull starts at noon on Sunday (9/17). The pie eating contest is at 3:30 PM Saturday. The watermelon eating contest is at 2 PM Sunday. The cute kid contest is at 9:45 AM Sunday (check in at 9:15).

Theatre Talk Tuesday 🎭

Film: Annapolis Film Festival premieres the documentary Canary. Follow the life of Dr. Lonnie Thompson as he climbs some of the highest mountains in the world to study climate change. September 20 at Maryland Hall. Tickets.

Ballet: Ballet Theatre of Maryland opens its new season (its 45th) next month with Stravinsky’s The Firebird. Get ready for new sets, costumes, and choreography at Maryland Hall October 13–15. Tickets.

CIVIL NEWS

Making walking to school safer

Anne Arundel Public Works (DPW) and AACPS are working together to launch Safe Routes to Schools. They hope this new initiative will make walking or biking to school more accessible at 17 county schools, including three in Naptown Scoop’s radius of coverage.
