TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This newsletter is NOT free. Yes, I lied. If you want to keep getting this newsletter for free, as a gentlemen’s agreement and ladies’ understanding, you have to share it with your friends. The more people know about it, the more motivated we are to bring you the best content.

Oh . . . and referral counts have been restored. We reward those who share Scoop.

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon

And now a special message from Scoop Super Fan Mark McCulloh: "Holly McCulloh, my love, Happy Birthday.”

Happy Maryland Day!

Maryland Day celebrates the landing of the first European settlers in Maryland. They landed at St. Clement’s Island with two ships, The Ark and The Dove, on March 25, 1634. We began officially celebrating in 1903 and it became a legal holiday in 1916. However, most festivities (and there are many) happen next weekend. We’ll publish a full schedule Wednesday.

City of Annapolis offices and the Stanton Center are closed today. Pip Moyer Recreation Center (host of next weekend’s Fire in the Kitchen pickleball tournament) is open. Trash, recycling, yard trim, and transit schedules aren’t affected.

Taste the Rainbow at The Choptank

The humble orange crush. A workhorse of warm-weather leisure and Annapolis' unofficial drink of summer. Did you know it was invented in Ocean City back in ‘95?

As an Annapolis icon, The Choptank knew it needed good, no, great crushes. It all starts with juice – fresh squeezed just like it was in Ocean City circa 1995. Well . . . technically it starts with the ice. Pellet ice like everyone's favorite chicken restaurant uses. Then comes the juice.

Followed by Texas-made Deep Eddy vodka, triple sec, and a splash of Sprite. Swap club soda and you have a skinny crush.

Personally, I'm a grapefruit guy. Not skinny. Something about that huge fresh slice hanging off the rim like a bow on a birthday present gets me every time.

Winter’s over. It’s crush season at The Choptank. Make your reservations today.

Quick Hits

🚨 Traffic Alert 🚨

The right westbound lane of Route 50 between the Severn River Bridge and the Ritchie Highway ramp is NOW OPEN. Shoutout to the construction crews for finishing two days early!

Alderman DaJuan Gay’s extortionist pleads guilty

Omaryan White plead guilty yesterday to one count of blackmail. Last March, he texted Alderman Gay a message demanding $5,000 and threatening DaJuan’s family if it wasn’t paid. He also said he’d release photos and video of DaJuan smoking weed and drinking alcohol if police got involved. The photos did get released, but Omaryan hasn’t been proven responsible.

Circuit Court Judge J. Michael Wachs sentenced Omaryan to 5 years in prison and 3 years of supervised probation and suspended the prison time. With good behaviour on probation, it’s possible to expunge the case from Omaryan’s record. ($)

Local Business

Annapolis Artisans Market

The Annapolis Artisans Market is a collection of local creators of furniture, art, decor, jewelry, and apparel curated by Local by Design in two huge warehouses in the Arts District. Once a month, it’s open for a weekend of shopping, beverage tasting, and snacking. This is that weekend.

It’s open tonight from 4–8 PM with snacks, bevvies, and DJ Crawdads. It’s open tomorrow from 10 AM–5 PM with spirits, mixers, and food from Gray Wolf, Cane Collective, and Truck of Deliciousness. And it’s open Sunday from 10 AM–5 PM with the Old Line Crab Co. food truck. Swing by at 1818 Margaret Avenue or 1805 C & D Virginia Avenue.

Food Truck Friday

It’s hard to believe we haven’t had a Friday since last Friday. Time is flying. Anyhow, it’s a spring Friday in Annapolis. That means it’s Food Truck Friday. 11 food trucks offering tacos, pasta, pizza, and more are parking at 275 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21401 from 4–8 PM rain or shine tonight. Put me down for the Italian pulled pork with risotto 😋

⚠️ Scam Alert ⚠️

Hey, business owners. Don’t fall for this. Some people who can’t figure out how to make money the real way are sending letters to businesses requiring a check or money order for an “elective Maryland Certificate of Good Standing with an official seal of the Secretary of State.” These don’t exist. Some MD businesses do need a certificate of good standing, but it comes from the Department of Assessments and Taxation.

That said, if any business wants an “elective Annapolis certificate of Good Standing with an official seal of the Secretary of Scoop" we can make that happen. For a few bitcoins, of course. Kidding . . . .

Bunny photos for all (even your 🐶)

Dozens of families are taking adorable photos with the Easter Bunny every day at Westfield Annapolis. Will you be next? Bunny’s on duty daily until April 8 so there’s plenty of time.

Westfield’s even scheduled a sensory-sensitive photo hour this Sunday and three hours just for pets on Monday.

Reservations aren’t required but are highly recommended – especially for the sensory-sensitive and pet sessions. Secure your spot.

What’s Happenin’

Annapolis Film Festival

Opening night is in the books and the Annapolis Film Festival is off to the races. If you’ve never been, here’s my advice:

  • Don’t be afraid to see movies you haven’t heard of. Pretty much everyone will enjoy the closing day film. They picked it for that reason.

  • Don’t discount the short films. Good things come in small packages.

  • Dress nice. It’s more fun that way.

  • Get a festival pass and go full send.

  • Invite filmmakers to dinner. The answer’s always no until you ask.

Remember, they’ve got 70+ films at 7 locations across the weekend. If you can’t find something you like, then you might just not like movies.

Informal MRE sock burning

Didn’t burn your socks last weekend at the Maritime Museum? Burn ‘em this weekend. The informal Maritime Republic of Eastport sock burning starts when else . . . at the crack o’ noon at Stella’s Marina – 604 State St, Annapolis, MD 21403. The flyer says, “If you want it bring it” so that’s BYOB and BYOS (socks).

Why do we burn socks? I’ll leave that to SpinSheet.

Trash or Treasure?

Have you ever considered (or dreamed) that all that crap in your attic might be worth something. Time to find out. Expert appraiser Todd Peenstra is appraising almost anything ($10 per item) at the Eastport Democratic Club from 1:30–3 PM on Saturday. Doors open at 11:30 AM. Todd prides himself on making this fun btw. There will be a cash bar and a food truck; spectators are welcome.

Todd can appraise jewelry, coins, silver, glass, porcelain, pottery, art, clocks, toys, tools, weapons, furniture, decoys, lamps, nautical items, musical instruments, walking sticks, and collectibles. He does not do books or stamps.

Highlighting Anne Arundel’s African American Female Pioneers

After multiple years of research and writing, the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation has released a book called Celebrating African American Female Pioneers. It features a two to three-page bio about 34 women trailblazers who called Anne Arundel County Home — from Lucy Smith with her market stall in the 1800s to 2021 Naval Academy Brigade Commander Sydney Barber.

There’s a reception on Sunday, March 26 at the Michael E. Busch Library. Copies will be for sale. Some of the 34 women will be there so bring your Sharpies. Doors open at 1:30 PM, formal program at 2 PM, reception to follow. 1410 West St, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Double wedding expo weekend

Is the best day of your life coming up? Nevermind, Ted Lasso season 3 already came out. Is the second best day of your life coming up? If so, there are two wedding expos in Annapolis this weekend where you can meet a ton of local wedding professionals – photographers, bakers, caterers, florists, etc. Unfortunately, they’re both at the same time. Overachievers, you know what do. Indecisive people, good luck.

  • Quiet Waters Wedding Expo @ Quiet Waters Park from 11 AM–2 PM Sunday, 3/26. Free with registration.

  • Historic Inns Wedding Fair @ Governor Calvert House from 12–3 PM on Sunday, 3/26. $15 registration.

But if they don't, let's chat. We're only two thirds through the school year. Definitely not too late to turn Ds into Bs on the report card. The real way. Not with a few carefully drawn lines. Thank you from Bosom Buddies Charities

What a tremendous response. First, Bosom Buddies Ball tickets sold out. Then raffle tickets sold so fast that Bosom Buddies limited online sales. There are still a few left online so snap those up while you still can. Bosom Buddies Charities wants to thank you for supporting the fight against breast cancer in our community.*

She’s back and I’m not talking about T-Swift

I’m talking about the Wilma Lee, of course! Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s beloved, authentic Skipjack. After a relaxing winter on Tilghman Island, Wilma Lee is back in Eastport and ready to cruise. Upcoming cruises include Chesapeake Heritage Cruises, Sunset Cruises, and before long . . . Wednesday Night Race watching (my personal favorite). Learn more and book online.*
