THE DIGEST
Heat wave
Today’s high temperature is forecasted to be 96º. Tuesday’s is 95º. And Wednesday’s not far behind at 93º. So here are a few things you should know.
Annapolis is opening its primary cooling center at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center 10 AM – 6 PM through Friday. Several other cooling centers are also open for temporary relief.
City of Annapolis trash collection will start 30 minutes early at 5:30 AM through June, July, and August. Not an early bird? You can put the cans out after 6 PM the night before.
AACPS moved all camps and activities inside or canceled them. Many other organizations probably made similar moves.
Don’t leave children or pets in cars. Unless, of course, you have a Tesla with Dog Mode.
Postponed: Say My Name Memorial dedication
It’s hot out there, and it’s best to stay inside if you can. A dedication for the Say My Name memorial at Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park Cemetery has been postponed because of high heat forecast for this week. Originally scheduled for Wednesday with a rain date of next Monday, the dedication will be held on a new date which is TBA. The memorial, an initiative of the Friends of Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery, pays tribute to the 1,700 people who died at the hospital and were buried in unmarked graves. Keep an eye on the memorial webpage for updates as they become available.
Carr’s Beach project inches forward
After multiple listening sessions and creative planning meetings, the City is beginning to unveil its plans for the 5-acre parcel of land formerly known as Carr’s Beach. Last Wednesday, the Department of Parks and Recreation showcased the results of their listening sessions over the winter, expressing themes of environmental care, arts and culture, design, and history. The concept plan will provide waterfront access to the public through a kayak launch and educational installations, focusing on the cultural legacy of Black Annapolitans. Construction is expected to begin next year. ($)
Navy welcomes new leadership
The Naval Academy’s new commandant, Capt. Gilbert E. Clark, Jr., will be sworn in this morning in a change of leadership open to invited guests only. Commandant Clark will lead the Brigade of Midshipmen in their day-to-day conduct, military training, and professional development. It’s like the Dean of Students at a regular college. He replaces Commandant Walter H. Altman III, who has now completed his one-year assignment.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Main Street Building sells for $3 million
Ever looked at a building on Main Street and wondered how much it’s worth? You know. Just in case you win the Powerball. . . Carrollton Enterprises just bought 180 Main Street for $3 million, adding to its portfolio of properties (mainly shopping centers) across Maryland. This 7,400-square-foot building in the heart of downtown is unique in its mix of retail, apartments, and offices, plus modern amenities (like air conditioning). ($)
No word yet on what businesses will lease space at 180 Main Street, but Carrollton Enterprises knows Annapolis well — up until last fall, they owned 121 Main Street.

Just Announced: Who’s headlining the Annapolis Songwriters’ Festival?
It’s shaping up to be one heck of a September! The 4th annual Annapolis Songwriters Festival (ASF) comes to town September 12, with one change. Due to construction at City Dock, the ASF main stage is relocating to Calvert Street. Expect the same high-energy vibes for their headlining show from Dirty Heads at 6 PM. Rams Head Presents will announce the full festival lineup soon. Btw, ASF follows the model of the hugely successful Key West Songwriters Festival, the largest festival of its kind in the world. Tickets are on sale now (kids 10 and under are free with an adult ticket).
Save the date: Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival
The 35th annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival is right around the corner, returning to Annapolis on September 13 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The celebration is one of the largest African-American heritage festivals on the East Coast, with live performances, food vendors, arts and crafts, education, and empowerment. Headliners this year include R&B artist Jon B, gospel legends Harvey Watkins and the Canton Spirituals, and lots more. This great event is free, so bring the whole family.
Register today: Bay Bridge Paddle 🌊
Last week, our polling determined that only about half of you would cross the Bay Bridge via bike-pedestrian lane. So we have another mode of transport for you? Would you paddleboard across the bay instead? Perks include no cars. Cons include not being able to pedal with your legs. If that sounds more your style, don’t miss registration for the Bay Bridge Paddle coming up on September 14. You’ll start at Sandy Point at 8 AM and end over on the Eastern Shore, and you have the option of traveling via kayak, SUP, surfski, prone, or outrigger canoe. Early bird pricing is available through July 1.
Boatyard Beach Bash Tickets Now Available 🌴
Annapolis is one lucky dockside town. There are almost too many waterfront music events to count each summer. We say this often . . . but you’re going to want to mark your calendar for The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s 20th Annual Boatyard Beach Bash on September 20. Enjoy island vibes and world-class musicians, including members of Jimmy Buffett’s iconic Coral Reefer Band. GA tickets include drinks, food, and six hours of entertainment. VIP (Very Important Parrothead) tickets include GA perks + exclusive seating, gourmet food, and an exclusive bar. Get tickets before they sail away.
Save the date: Annapolis Pickleball Club Open Tournament
The Annapolis Pickleball Club Open Tournament may not be until September 22–24. But with how hard it is to book a pickleball court these days and how much practice your dink needs, you’ll want to jump on registering. The three-day smash at Truxtun Park features singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and beginner matches for all skill levels (beginner to 4.5+) and age brackets (19+ to 80+). Singles hit the court on 9/22, doubles on 9/23, and mixed doubles and beginner matches on 9/24. Don’t get left on the sidelines — register now.

Annapolis Blues pulls out a road W after disappointing home loss
With their move into the United Soccer League’s Level II, the Annapolis Blues have met greater competition on the field and sometimes struggled to pull out the massive blowout wins fans became accustomed to over the last two years. But as anyone who grew up with older siblings knows, tough competition makes for tough competitors.
After a disappointing home loss to Virginia Beach United, the men got on the road and released their anger in a 7-1 win against Patuxent FA. The women’s team continues to dominate, holding strong and without a loss this year. Next men’s home game is June 28, when Patuxent will get a chance to redeem themselves. The women will face Richmond Ivy before the men’s match. C’mon, Annapolis. Let’s show them how much we love this team.
