🍦Hello, Polar Vortex

Ski movie night at Maryland Hall, where to fix broken shoes, no more plastic bags...

Good morning, Annapolis. Some of you want to trade Mark Andrews. Some of you are worried about facing one of the best running backs in NFL history. As for me (Ryan), I probably shouldn’t admit this publicly but. . .

I’m a die-hard Eagles fan. Go Birds 🦅

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Ski movie night at Maryland Hall

  • Where to fix broken shoes

  • No more plastic bags in Annapolis

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

It’s freakin’ cold

With high temperatures not exceeding freezing until Saturday and low temps approaching single digits, we thought these reminders might be helpful.

  • If you see water bubbling out of the street, it could be a water main break. Report immediately to. . .

    • City of Annapolis: 410-224-2160 (24-hour line)

    • Anne Arundel County: 410-263-7970 (24-hour line)

  • The warming center is open at the Stanton Center during overnight hours.

  • Layers are the key to warmth.

  • Florida has no state income tax.

Why aren’t the kids in school today when yesterday was the holiday?

Confused? Don’t be. First off, schools aren’t technically closed. Teachers are there but students aren’t. It’s the end of semester break. The kids are back tomorrow.*

Why the asterisk? Because it’s freezing and potentially treacherous out there. Teachers are reporting 2 hours late today and as of press time, AACPS had a banner on the website warning teachers and families to be ready for a shift to virtual learning on Wednesday. Just in case.

If that happens, we can see the Facebook comments now. . . Back in my day, we had to walk uphill both ways in a snowstorm to get to school and the classrooms weren’t heated!

Don’t forget your reusable bags! 🛒

Annapolis goes tote-ally eco-friendly starting tomorrow. No seriously, be sure to bring your totes and other reusable bags on your next shopping trip, because the city’s Plastic Bag Reduction Act goes into effect. To minimize single-use plastic and encourage sustainability, the ordinance prohibits retail establishments from providing plastic carryout bags for purchases (with some exceptions). Don’t worry if you forget your reusable bags though — you can still get a plastic bag to carry your stuff for a 10-cent fee.

🛍 Need a bag? The City will distribute reusable bags courtesy of WNAV on Saturday at 1 PM on Admiral Drive. There will also be reusable bags periodically stocked on City Transit Lines starting in March.

🧐 Wasn’t this already a thing? Yes and no. It’s been a law in Anne Arundel County since last January, but the City of Annapolis is a municipality within Anne Arundel County so it has different laws.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Reader Recommendation: Parole Shoe & Luggage Repair

“I brought a bunch of purses into the shop to be cleaned. Instead of charging me an arm and a leg to clean the bags, the owner recommended a salve I could purchase and then walked me through how to clean the bags myself, including demonstrating while I was in the store. It saved me hundreds of dollars! I appreciated his kindness and looking out for my interests as a customer.”

— Emily Arneson

Our friends at Patagonia like to say that repair is radical. They mean it both ways – it’s cool and a little weird. We think they’re onto something. So the next time a shoe, suitcase, or bag breaks, take it to Parole Shoe & Luggage Repair. You’ll find them at 2060 Somerville Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Theater Talk Tuesday 🎭

Two thought-provoking dramas are playing at local theaters this week:

🐰 Colonial Players presents Alabama Story
A timely and thought-provoking historical drama takes us to Civil Rights-era Alabama where a segregationist Senator goes up against a tough librarian to try banning a children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit, running now through Feb. 1.

🧮 Compass Rose Theater presents Proof
Now playing at Compass Rose Theater is the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning play Proof, about a woman trying to navigate the emotional toll of her brilliant mathematician father as she questions whether she inherited any of his genius or his madness. Performances run through Feb. 9.

Want to play for the Blues? ⚽️

If you think you’ve got what it takes to play semi-professional soccer with the Annapolis Blues, here’s your chance. Tryouts are scheduled for January 26 (women) and February 2 (men). Both tryouts are 6:30–8 PM at Indian Creek School, the official practice facility of our Annapolis Blues. All players — whether you make the team or not — get a T-shirt and two tickets to the season opener. Sign up.

Movie Night at Maryland Hall: Warren Miller’s 75

It’s almost too cliche that Maryland Hall is showing a ski movie the week of the polar vortex. But it was planned well before anyone knew it’d be such a good chili-for-dinner week. This Thursday at 8 PM, Warren Miller’s 75 is playing in Maryland Hall’s Bowen Theatre. Who’s Warren Miller? I’m glad you asked.

After he left the Navy after WW2, Warren Miller bought a video camera and moved to Sun Valley, ID. He started making videos for fun and three years later, formed Warren Miller Entertainment in 1949. The company’s made a new ski movie every year since, even though Warren died at 93 in 2018. The ski bums among us will know that they are absolutely epic. 75 is the latest. So if you can’t hit the slopes, this is the next best thing. Get tickets.

Save the date: Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning 🧦

It may feel strange (even cruel) to read this on the coldest day of winter (so far. . .) but boat shoe season is only a few months away. The Annapolis Maritime Museum already has plans to welcome in the Spring Equinox with its beloved annual Oyster Roast & Sock Burning on March 22 from noon to 4 PM. There will be local bands, raw and cooked oysters, food trucks, shucking contests, and — of course — sock burning. Tickets go on sale Thursday.
