THE DIGEST
Annapolis wins Slaughter Across the Water again
Politically, Naptown Scoop strives to remain 100% neutral (hopefully a welcome stance this week). But in the playful battle between Annapolis and Eastport, weâre squarely team Eastport. Our office is here (just 300 feet from the Tug of War site). Our boat club is here. Our favorite bar is here.
So it is with great sadness that we report Annapolis has won the Tug of War for the third year in a row by a score of 4â3.
Annapolis won the first tug against the Eastport Army. Eastportâs Fourth Street Bars answered with a decisive victory against Annapolis Bars. And then it all went haywire.

Eastportâs Schuyler Line Navigation seemed to have pulled out an incredible comeback against Annapolisâ Hyatt Real Estate. But it wasnât meant to be. Allegedly there was a phony radio transmission about the tug being over. The on-water judges called for a re-run, but just you try rounding up dozens of tuggers who thought they were done and headed for the beer tents. Ultimately, Eastport forfeited tug #3.
Annapolis dominated the next two tugs with Annapolis Elementary and Annapolis Police Foundation easily beating Eastport Yacht Club and Annapolis Dragon Boat Club respectively.
Annapolis Athletic Club (which is confusingly in Eastport) beat Peake Social in tug #6. And Eastport Girls beat Annapolis Girls in tug #7 but it was all for naught. Annapolis sealed the victory in tug #5.
Until next year. . . Up the Republic!
Beloved Navy sports broadcaster battling brain cancer
Pete Medhurst, also known as âThe Voice of Navy Sports,â had broadcasted 240 consecutive Navy football games dating all the way back to 1997 until Saturday. Instead of the press box in Houston, Pete was in the hospital recovering from a surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumor. He will have radiation and chemo to address more tumors. According to Bill Wagner (who co-hosts our Anchors Aweigh Podcast with Pete), the outpouring of support has been immense. Get well soon, Pete. The airwaves arenât the same without you. ($)

After the best start in recent memory, Navy has taken two steps backward. The first loss shouldnât have surprised anyone â #12 Notre Dame (now #10) dominated our #24 (now unranked) Midshipmen. Saturdayâs loss stings a bit worse. 2â6 Rice held Navy to just 10 points in a game marred by a 5+ hour weather delay to hand the Mids their second loss of the season. With four games left, Navy can still have a fantastic season. But it wonât be easy. Two of Navyâs remaining opponents (Army and Tulane) are the top 2 teams in the American Athletic Conference; Navy is third. ($)
