THE DIGEST

Eat Like a Marylander this Thanksgiving 🦃

What does it mean to eat like a Marylander? It’s not always about crabcakes and Berger cookies. Maryland Department of Agriculture and its marketing program Maryland’s Best just launched a Thanksgiving campaign dubbed “Eat Like a Marylander.” The idea is to buy meal boxes with ingredients straight from our state’s own farms. You get everything you need for the big meal, and local farmers get the business — it’s a win-win.

Participating farms include:

📦 Moon Valley Farm (Woodsboro)
📦 Jones Family Farm (Edgewood)
📦 Emily’s Produce (Cambridge)

Interested in ordering? Get info and order through Maryland’s Best. They even have great recipe ideas for apps, mains, sides, and desserts.

Welcome to Peeper Szn 🍁

Around Anne Arundel County, armchair arborists are uniting and celebrating the jewel tones of fall foliage. According to Maryland Department of Natural Resources, this week marks Central MD’s peak season for leaf peeping, with the golds and burgundies of oaks, hickories, and maples exploding like popcorn around the state. Less-developed areas and watersheds will have the best colors, but also look to ridges and hardwood forests for the brightest displays.

Peep a Comet too . . . ☄️

But don’t just focus on your daylight peeping! There’s a chance we’ll have a Halloween Comet in the skies, if C/2024 S1 decides to keep itself together long enough to get back to us. If so, the foresters say that the naked eye should be able to spot the comet to the east, near the Andromeda Galaxy. With a waning moon and warmer weather, it’s the best time of the year to be outside (and looking up). 🎃

LOCAL BUSINESS

New Waugh Chapel bagel joint brings more to the table 🥯

Nico’s Bagels and Brunch, newly opened in Gambrills by owner Jerry Osuna, offers more than just a great breakfast. The restaurant, located behind Dicks Sporting Goods, is the longtime dream of Osuna and his son, Nico, who died by suicide in 2018. Nico was studying hospitality at Florida International University with the hope of opening a bagel shop one day. After Nico’s death, his father created Nico’s Hope for Life Foundation, whose mission is to raise public awareness and provide resources for those struggling with their mental health.

Today, Osuna, Sr. has taken his son’s legacy one step further. Nico’s Bagels and Brunch offers New York-style bagels (and great bagel sandwiches), and uses proceeds from certain bagels to fund the Foundation’s mission. Whether you’re an egg and cheese on everything traditionalist, or an Oreo bagel with strawberry schmear disruptor, the food is phenomenal and the people behind the counter are even better. — 991 Waugh Chapel Way, Gambrills, MD ($)
