Anne Arundel’s first baby of 2024 👶🏻
Emily Last swore she’d never do a home birth. “There’s no amount of money you could pay me,” she said. However, Anne Arundel County’s first baby of 2024 had other plans.
Just after midnight on Jan 1, Emily and her husband, Jeff, were waiting in the living room for a babysitter for their two-year-old, Francie. Emily’s water had broken and they planned to head for the hospital until Emily said, “We’re not making it to the hospital.”
Lucky for Jeff, the Annapolis Fire Department showed up within 5 minutes of their 911 call and delivered Thea Last at 5 pounds, 15 ounces. Mom and baby are both doing well at home. 🎀 ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS
InGrano taking over Flamant space
Big news for the Annapolis restaurant scene. InGrano is opening a fine dining restaurant where Flamant used to be in West Annapolis. If you’ve ever been to an InGrano supper club or wine dinner, you know they’re highly capable of fine dining. And there’s even more good news: they’re opening “in the coming weeks” and many of Flamant’s talented staff are joining InGrano’s new concept. So what about the food?
They say it’s going to be an elevated, global dining experience. Expect innovative, locally sourced, and memorable dishes – just like InGrano’s original restaurant. I’ve personally said so many times that I wish InGrano had a second, full-service restaurant closer to downtown so this is extremely exciting.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
It’s gonna be cold and rainy on Saturday. Perfect for inside activities. But if you want to get out of the house for inside activities, allow me to suggest Navy’s in personbasketball game against Colgate at 1 PM on Saturday. Tickets are just $5 for kids and $10 for adults. And even though Colgate has won 3 Patriot League titles in a row, they’re 1–5 on the road this year and Navy is 5–1 at home and coming off a great victory over Boston University. Regardless, GO NAVY, BEAT COLGATE.
FYI: Shenandoah Run show postponed
The Maryland Hall Local performance of Shenandoah Run on Saturday (1/6) has been postponed because of inclement weather. It will be rescheduled this spring so stay tuned!

Redevelopment bill fails in County Council
County Council has rejected a bill to encourage developers to redesign vacant properties rather than build new buildings. If you’re getting déjà vu, that’s because County Council rejected another bill regarding developers last month – but that one was about affordable housing. County Executive Steuart Pittman had planned for the bills to work in tandem but now that tandem bike has two flat tires. But flat tires aren’t permanent. Pittman is hopeful for another iteration of policy and said, “I think we will still get this done.” ($)
County hires first Director for the new Office of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources
County Executive Steuart Pittman has announced Alison Flores as the County’s first Director of the Office of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources. The new office will support communities across Anne Arundel County. Flores most recently served as the Deputy Director for the Prince George’s County Office of Community Relations. Before that, she was the Latino Affairs Liaison for the Prince George’s County Executive’s Office. Congrats and welcome, Alison!

Severn boys basketball beats St. Mary’s 🏀
Severn boys basketball didn’t just beat their bitterest rival, St. Mary’s, this week. They crushed them – 69 to 38. The last time the Admirals defeated the Saints was in 2020, by a single point. Senior Kingston Price headed the Admirals’ attack with 19 points. Freshman Corey Dixon (son of University of Maryland legend Juan Dixon) funneled another 14 points – most from the perimeter.
The rivals face off again in a few weeks. We’ll be curious how the Saints respond. ($)
