TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop. We don’t chase twisters like Glen Powell, but we do chase the latest news, events, and cool stories around Annapolis to keep you in the know.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Buy Local Week Day 4: Great Frogs Winery 🍷

  • Hot Air Balloons & Lasers ⚡️

  • Plastic Bag ban in Annapolis 🛍️

Let’s get to it.

— Lauren Burke Meyer, Dylan Roche, Chelsea Harrison, & Ryan Sneddon

Q&A with Annapolis Olympian Joe Morris 🇺🇸

The Olympic Games 2024 Paris coverage gets started tomorrow with the Opening Ceremony prime time coverage starting at 7:30 PM — who else is psyched? 🖐️

Have you ever wondered what the Olympic Village is really like? How Olympians handle the pressure? What happens after the competition is over?

Well we sat down with Annapolis native and Severn School alum Joe Morris, who competed in the Rio 2016 games in the 49er Men’s Sailing, to find out what it’s like to actually be an Olympian. He also gave us some insight on this year’s sailing conditions and events in Paris.

Annapolis has never seen football like this ⚽

This is a big deal, y’all. The English Premier League (AKA the top soccer league in the world) is playing three games in the USA this summer and one of them is right here in Annapolis!

This Wednesday at 8 PM (7/31), Crystal Palace is playing the Wolverhampton Wanderers at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. And fun fact: Because Premier League teams don’t play on turf, they’re installing brand new sod just for this game!

Instead of driving 90 minutes to Dulles, flying 8 hours to London, and spending who knows how much along the way to see these teams play in their home country, why not just see them right here in our hometown?

Annapolis has seen some great soccer recently (We 💙 our Blues) but we’ve never seen anything like this. Come see some of the best players in the world with us next week!

THE DIGEST

Buy Local Week: Great Frogs Winery 🍇

It’s day 4 of Buy Local Week. We’ve covered meat, seafood, and veggies. Now you need some wine . . . So tap into Annapolis-based Great Frogs Winery. They pour their heart, soul, and mind into every bottle produced. If you’ve ever dreamed of running a winery, here’s what they do:

🍷 Prune, train, hedge, and harvest each plant by hand.
🍷 Grow the best grapes possible. This means long days in the extreme heat and cold caring for the vines.
🍷 Harvest at night, handling and fermenting the grapes at the lowest possible temps for high-quality wines that showcase the versatility of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Something else that’s cool? Great Frogs offers recipes and notes what wine to pair with meals.

Visit Great Frogs Winery for the best local wines at 3218 Harness Creek Rd in Annapolis.

*FYI, Buy Local Week encourages Marylanders to use locally grown, produced, or harvested products into their meal.

Bye bye, plastic bags 👋

Try saying “bag ban” five times fast. It might be a little tricky to say, but we’re hoping it will be a lot less tricky to put in practice. Plastic bags will soon be a no-go in Annapolis, after the City Council’s vote on Monday night. Starting in January 2025, businesses within the city will no longer distribute single-use plastic bags, although paper bags will be available for 10 cents. The legislation passed with a council vote of 7-1.

This legislation is similar to legislation that’s been in place throughout Anne Arundel County since the beginning of the year. So, don’t fret, Annapolitans — those of us shopping around the county have already had a chance to adjust. Just put your reusable bags back in the car as soon as you unload the groceries.

A MESSAGE FROM ST. ANNE’S SCHOOL OF ANNAPOLIS

Educating Children on Civil Discourse During Election Season

“Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife.”

- John Dewey

At St. Anne’s School, we know it is critically important to educate the next generation to be active participants in a healthy democracy where differing perspectives are welcomed and debated respectfully and civilly. Through programs such as Peacemakers, Capstones, World Leadership, and our focus on social/emotional learning, our students learn civil discourse skills alongside their peers. This year, with election season upon us, it is even more important to lean into these skills.

Last week, St. Anne’s School’s Head of School, Connie Coker, spent time in Atlanta, Georgia, with approximately 80 heads of school from across the country through the National Association of Independent Schools. Mrs. Coker engaged in conversation with school leaders and the Washington D.C.-based Close Up Foundation about civil and civic discourse; facilitating challenging conversations during the upcoming election season, discussing deliberation over debate, and leaning into values-based teaching and learning at every age and stage (from two-year-olds to adults). As we prepare for the upcoming election, St. Anne’s School will partner with educational thought leaders across the country to educate students and teachers – and our community – on how to put civil discourse, respect, responsibility, honesty, and kindness to practice.

To learn about these efforts and more, come visit St. Anne’s School!
