🍦Introducing Annapolis Hope
County Council meeting, pumpkin patch, Kunta Kinte festival rescheduled...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Every day it gets colder and colder and the sweater drawer looks more and more appealing. I hope you’re as excited as me.
Let’s get to it.
—Ryan Sneddon & Rebecca Kraybill
Introducing Annapolis Hope
On June 11, Annapolis experienced our worst mass shooting in five years. Nick Mireles, his son Mario Mireles-Ruiz, and their friend Christian Segovia were killed by a neighbor during a party at Mario’s home. Police reports said it was a parking dispute. It was charged as a hate crime.
Thirteen children were orphaned, three women were widowed, and three other people were wounded.
8 of those children belonged to fifty-five-year-old Nick Mireles and his wife, Sandra. Nick and Sandra were two years into a 5-year lease-to-own contract on their home. Without the income from Nick’s landscaping business, the family faces the risk of eviction. This is where we, the Annapolis community, are going to help.
If the Mireles’ buy the home within a year, it’s theirs for $247,000. Annapolis Hope is a massive fundraising effort to make that happen.
It won’t bring Nick back. Nothing can. But we can lift a tremendous burden off Sandra’s shoulders.
Naptown Scoop is throwing its full weight behind Annapolis Hope. We aren’t just supporting this effort, we’re leading it. But we can’t do it without help. Here’s what we need:
Three volunteers to coordinate corporate fundraising, church participation, and raffles. Respond to this email to apply.
Compassionate citizens to attend the Annapolis Hope kickoff event on October 10. Buy tickets here.
Generous givers to donate their hard-earned money. Click here to donate directly.
Gather ‘round, Annapolis. We’re going to show this family how Annapolis treats our own.
Oh by the way, when we say we’re leading this, we’re leading by example. We’re committing $1,000 cash, proceeds from The Great Annapolis Pumpkin Spice Coffee Crawl, proceeds from our limited edition holiday candle, and designing a limited edition sweatshirt to support this effort.
A MESSAGE FROM WESTFIELD ANNAPOLIS.
Help the library help those in need!
Did you know that 1 in 2 U.S. families cannot afford enough diapers to keep their children clean, dry, and healthy? This is true right here in Anne Arundel County. To help address that need in our community, the Discoveries Library Community Pantry is still collecting donations of diapers, wipes, and other hygiene supplies to fill the pantry for the coming year. Drop off at Discoveries Library in Westfield Annapolis anytime or use their Amazon wishlist to have items sent directly to the branch.
Community pantry distribution of diapers, wipes, hygiene supplies, menstrual products occurs twice a month- on the first Saturday of the month from 10-noon and the first Tuesday of the month from 6-7. Anyone is welcome to visit the library in Westfield Annapolis near Crate & Barrel for distribution or to be connected with the many resources the library offers to all.
This is it. The final weekend of the Western Shore Veterinary Hospital Great Naptown Scavenger Hunt. C2 has maintained their lead from Day 1, but it’s far from insurmountable. To those about to hunt, we salute you.
And remember, it’s not too late to register a team for the weekend. Click here to join the fun.

Anchors Aweigh double episode drop
We’ve got two Navy sports podcasts for you today. First is the Anchors Aweigh podcast where Bill Wagner and Pete Medhurst discuss how a government shutdown will affect Navy athletics. Second is the Navy Football Podcast where Bill Wagner, Keenan Reynolds, and Eric Kettani preview this weekend’s game against USF.
Here’s what Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk says about the shows:
“Bill, your tireless efforts and your delivery are just extraordinary and so valuable to us. Peter, you're the voice of who we are and your in-depth analysis and passion for Navy athletics is something we cherish. The both of you are our one-two punch and thanks for what we do. We really appreciate the relationships.”
Special Olympics honors Anne Arundel schools
Six county high schools received national recognition from Special Olympics for their inclusive environments. (AAC pride moment: That’s twice as many of the rest of Maryland combined!) Broadneck, Crofton, Severna Park, and South River high schools earned the award for the first time. Northeast and Southern high schools renewed their status on the list of 2023 National Banner Unified Champion Schools. Annapolis High was named one of the top five Unified Champion Schools in the United States in 2022. Kudos to all teachers, students, and admins!
Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival rescheduled
The City of Annapolis announced yesterday that the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival which was canceled by tropical storm Ophelia will happen on October 28. It will still be held at City Dock and it will still be free. Meanwhile, at City Dock, Boat Show preparations are in full swing.

Wanted: Super candidates for superintendent
The search is on for Maryland schools’ top dog since current superintendent Mohammed Choudhury pulled a U-turn on his contract extension. The end of Choudhury’s tenure isn’t known but the Department of Education and Board of Education are getting their ducks in a row. They’ve launched a search committee and hope to have a new superintendent by July 2024.

Chet says Army can join American Athletic Conference
You know when mom let you sit in the backseat with your archrival sibling on a road trip? And it rocked ‘cause you could bother each other for 10 hours straight? Well, it’s looking like we could be stuck next to Army, so let the games begin. Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk says he supports Army joining the American Athletic Conference. There’s an open spot ever since SMU left. If it happens, beating Army would now count as a conference win 😎.
ICYMI: Chet Gladchuck talks about Army’s conference moves in our exclusive interview on Naptown Scoop’s Anchors Aweigh Podcast. Hear it for yourself.
