Recap: Navy vs. Notre Dame in Dublin ☘️

Words by Ryan Sneddon

Notre Dame’s famous band at halftime

I must have heard some variation of, “It’s like we picked up Annapolis and dropped it in Dublin” a dozen times last weekend. Personally, I met two new couples who live on my street and even someone who grew up a few blocks from my grandparents. 7,500 Navy fans made the trip and it felt like half were from Annapolis.

On Thursday, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (USNAAAF) hosted a “Welcome to Dublin” Hooley (aka Irish party) at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. Since there are 7 times more Irish-Americans in the USA than Ireland’s entire population, the museum was fascinating – even though the Irish whiskey tasting station closed before I arrived.

On Friday, the official tour package included a party at the Guinness Storehouse where about 1,000 alumni and their families learned how the Dublin-based company makes its famous beer. And yes, it really does taste better in Dublin – especially from the 7th floor glass-walled Gravity Bar.

Guinness’ Gravity Bar view at night

On Saturday, USNAAAF treated us to an Irish-inspired tailgate at the Lansdowne Football Club in the inspiring shadow of Aviva Stadium. It was a perfect pre-game, complete with the Naval Academy band, free flowing Guinness, and Irish weather (aka rain).

Inside the stadium, things didn’t go as we hoped. Number 13 ranked Notre Dame spanked Navy 42–3. Check out Bill Wagner’s recap for the expert analysis. At least we put up some points. Notre Dame rugby, who played Navy just down the road at Trinity College on Friday, can’t say the same. Navy won that bout 78–0.

Someone hilariously said if you combine the scores, Navy won the weekend.

But in reality, anyone who was lucky enough to be there won the weekend. Many fans are still gallivanting around Ireland or Europe. VADM Sean Buck and his wife are heading for southern Ireland, I’m writing this from a quiet cafe in Amsterdam, and I met one couple who’s now cruising the rivers of Belgium.

So no matter the score, thank you to the Naval Academy, Notre Dame, The Naval Academy Alumni Association, and most importantly, the very welcoming City of Dublin for planning and hosting an epic weekend.

SPONSORED BY MURTHY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Namita Murthy is pleased to introduce FaceTite. In fact, she’s the only plastic surgeon in Annapolis offering FaceTite. So, what is FaceTite?

Think of FaceTite like a facelift without big incisions.

For a normal facelift, Dr. Murthy cuts in the hairline near your temple and around your ear to the lower scalp. She redistributes fat and tissue, redrapes the skin, and trims the excess. Very safe, but still a major surgery.

With FaceTite, Dr. Murthy makes a series of pinhole incisions – so small they don’t even need stitches. She first removes any excess fat and then uses radiofrequency waves (which also stimulate collagen production) to tighten and remodel skin. It’s done under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.

FaceTite is a major breakthrough in facial contouring. Nothing else this minimally invasive even comes close to matching facelift results the way FaceTite does.

If your face and neck aren’t as tight as you’d like, schedule a comfortable and personalized consultation with Dr. Murthy today.

THE DIGEST

🍎 ✏️ First day of school for AACPS

Can one English word capture the first day of school feeling? If not, there’s always resfeber (pronounced: RACE-fay-ber). That’s a Swedish word for when anxiety and anticipation meet before a journey. 84,000 students are feeling that across Anne Arundel County this morning.

🚸 Remember to slow down and watch for buses. Here’s everything you might need to know.

New AACPS buildings
New facilities open this week for Hillsmere Elementary (Annapolis), Rippling Woods Elementary (Glen Burnie), and Quarterfield Elementary (Severn).

Lunch prices = same
The Board of Education voted back in May to keep breakfast and lunch prices constant for the 9th year running so if your kid says they need an extra quarter for lunch, just know it’s actually going in the piggy bank.

Bus problems = Solved
Thanks to pay raises and creative alternative transport solutions, all bus routes have drivers this morning. Many families know that wasn’t the case last year. AACPS is still training some reserve drivers so if any drivers get sick, it will cause disruptions. If that happens, there’s a new notification system to let you know via text & email.

Wanted: 168 teachers
The bad news: AACPS will have 168 teacher vacancies today. The good news: That’s much better than the 300 this time last year. AACPS says recent pay raises contributed to the improved outlook. Starting teacher salaries were raised by thousands of dollars for this fiscal year – which started July 1.

Scores are up, scores are down
AACPS kids are doing great in math; Algebra 1 assessment scores rose 10% year over year. Most other scores rose as well but nothing higher than 3.2%. Eighth grade science scores, however, fell the same 10% algebra gained. Superintendent Mark Bedell said his team is laser-focused on raising these scores and if what he did with the buses and teacher salaries is any indication, that shouldn’t take long.

After the bell rings → ⚽
Navy men’s soccer has its home opener against VMI tonight (8/28) at the most scenic soccer field in college sports. Get there early! The first 100 kids get a Navy branded notebook and pencil case. Monday (8/28) at 7 PM.

Good boys deserve good care 🐶

And that’s exactly what they get at Western Shore Veterinary Hospital. Any vet can diagnose and treat pets. It’s what they went to school for, after all. But you get a little more at Western Shore Veterinary Hospital.

Their clients love that they often see a vet same day, how patient the doctors are when explaining complicated medical issues, and how they even follow up after visits to check in on your pet.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

🥃 The Best Guys Night of the Year

Any sophisticated gentleman in Annapolis knows there is one can’t-miss event on his social calendar. It’s called Blazers. Bourbon. Cigars and it’s September 28 at the William Paca House. It’s been called the premier networking event in Annapolis. It’s been called the I Ching. It’s been called the sum of all wisdom. It’s been called the answer to any question. (Name that movie quote for infinite Scoop brownie points).

Blazers. Bourbon. Cigars is September 28 from 6–9 PM in the beautiful William Paca Garden. Get your ticket now before they’re gone for good.

Eastport farmer’s market

This may be hard to believe but according to the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, nearly 75,000 county residents live in a food desert. For context, Anne Arundel’s population is about 600,000. In Annapolis proper, Eastport is the only neighborhood on that list. So on September 9, Atlas Restaurant Group and Atlas Farms are teaming up with the City of Annapolis to host a free or nearly-free farmer’s market with fresh fruits and vegetables. It runs 10 AM–12 PM at the corner of Madison and President Streets.

🍔 Save this date: Burgers and Bands for Suicide Prevention

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and Charm City Run, Altra Running, and Annapolis Town Center are uniting for a special concert. Severna Park-based Burgers and Bands for Suicide Prevention is bringing its beloved fundraiser across the Severn River to Annapolis Town Center. Talented local bands will bring the tunes (like always). Geo Pizza’s flipping the burgers. September 28 from 5–8 PM. Learn more.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
