Chesapeake Chapters, Maryland Day, County Council meeting...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. There are a lot of businesses celebrating anniversaries in this Scoop. And as someone who knows firsthand how keeping a business going, not starting, is the hard part, my hat’s off to y’all. Thanks for pouring your hearts and souls into small businesses that make our town special.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
Introducing Chesapeake Chapters
Maryland Day
County Council meeting
Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST
Mutt Madness: It all comes down to this
We couldn’t have scripted Mutt Madness better than this. Two iconic breeds facing off for all the glory. Moose is up by almost 100. Is it the bowtie? Is it the Christmas tree? We don’t know. But if Ruby’s gonna make a comeback, it’s gotta happen fast. Voting ends at 6:30 PM tonight so if you haven’t yet, cast your vote for Annapolis’ top dog.
I also want to extend a very special thank you to Western Shore Veterinary Hospital for sponsoring Mutt Madness 2025. We can’t recommend them highly enough if you’re getting a new puppy. Our little Sadie isn’t afraid of going to the vet at all. In fact, last time we visited, she had to say hi to every single staff member before her check-up.
Fundraiser Focus: Honoring Pete Medhurst
Maryland’s sports community lost a legend earlier this year. Pete Medhurst’s voice talked sports all over Maryland – MLB games, harness racing, Navy football (and many other sports), talk radio, and even a podcast for us. To support his family, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation is hosting a Q&A with two of Pete’s renowned colleagues, Bill Wagner and Keith Mills. A reception will follow. It’ll be hosted at the Fluegel Alumni Center on April 3 from 5–8 PM. Tickets are $100.
Introducing Chesapeake Chapters 📚
This should shock no one, but the Scoop team loves reading. Lately, there’s been a big demand for book reviews from local authors. Cue Chesapeake Chapters. Periodically, we’ll update you on the best books — from children’s literature to historical nonfiction and self-help to everything in between. You might even spot these authors around town.
🇬🇷 First up? National bestseller, Kate Myers’ book, Excavations. Her laugh-out-loud novel takes place on a remote archeological site in Greece, the mythic home of the first Olympics. Four very different women — whom we wish we could meet — unearth an unusual artifact. To uncover what they’re really digging for (and to take down the man hiding their history) these dirt-crusted colleagues must become what they’ve long avoided — friends.
Kate is one of our OG Naptown Scoop readers, who also dazzled Lauren’s book club. But, don’t take our word for it. Amy Poehler (heard of her?) called her novel “funny, smart, and deeply delicious.” Speaking of the SNL alum, Peacock is adapting Excavations into a series starring Poehler. Filming starts later this year!
📖 Grab your copy at Old Fox Books, Park Books, Wyrd Bookstore, or, if you’re desperate Amazon.
P.S. Kate’s next book, Salty, drops June 24. Preorder it today!

LOCAL BUSINESS
HERE’s Spring Pop-up and 12th Anniversary
The oldest business in today’s Scoop is HERE. a pop-up shop, great friend of Naptown Scoop, and curator of Annapolis’ finest artisans. Several times a year HERE pops up somewhere and displays wares from nearly 100 local creators. The spring pop-up opens at 42 Randall Street this Thursday and runs through April 19. As always, HERE opens with a party from 5–8 PM.
ArtFarm Studios celebrates 11 years
It’s a good year to be ArtFarm. Not only did they just expand into the Annapolis Studio, but they’re celebrating 11 years in business this weekend – a milestone worth celebrating for any business. And for the celebration, they’ve lined up three special events:
Opening reception of ROAR, an exhibit featuring 5 local artists. Friday from 5–7 PM.
Letterpress printing workshop with renowned Philadelphia letterpress artist Frank Basemen. Saturday from 3–6 PM. Sorry, this is sold out!
Birthday market and social with local vendors, complimentary refreshments, and of course, art activities (like face painting!). Sunday from 11 AM – 3 PM.
Everything but the sold-out workshop is free and open to the public. Stop by at 111 Chinquapin Round Road, Suite 200, Annapolis, MD 21401.
Curate celebrates 4 years
And now we turn our confetti cannon to a business much closer to Scoop’s age. Curate, a very common satellite office for the Scoop team, is celebrating 4 years in business with a multi-course wine-paired dinner designed and prepared by Chef Cal Abdinoor. Chef Cal has a tremendous resume – over a decade cooking for the upper ranks of the U.S. Navy, runner-up of the Food Network’s Chopped, and personal chef for the 28th Secretary of Defense. You have two chances to taste Cal’s cooking (and perfectly paired wines) this weekend – Friday and Saturday, both at 7 PM. Get tickets here.

SPONSORED BY LAWN DOCTOR ANNAPOLIS
Spring is in the air 🍀
You know that neighbor who had the perfect green lawn last summer? They started preparing for that in spring, likely with Lawn Doctor. Let me explain.
During winter, grass growth slows significantly, and some types even go dormant due to the cold. This can leave your lawn vulnerable to weeds, thinning, and stress damage. A well-timed spring treatment with essential nutrients, pre-emergent, and weed control helps strength the grass, promote healthy lawn growth, and prepare it for the warmer months ahead!
And their expertise doesn’t stop there. They’ll even give you mowing techniques so your grass will be the envy of the neighborhood all summer long. Get your free quote today and check out their newsletter to learn more!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
Coming up this week
As we said last week, Annapolis is coming alive. And there’s perhaps no greater proof of that than. . .
The Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Oyster Roast & Sock Burning. Sadly, this shuckin’ good time is 100% sold out. But that doesn’t stop you from having your own. Burning socks to herald spring has been an Annapolis tradition since the late 70s. Here’s the story. But you will need socks for. . .
The Annapolis Running Festival. This one is not sold out (so no excuses). There’s a 5k, 10k, and half-marathon. All distances get some beautiful downtown Annapolis action so drivers beware. All races start around 7 AM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday. There’s also a huge post-race party at the stadium (with its own sock bonfire). If you’d rather walk. . .
Maybe check out Historic London Town’s Garden Ramble. Musicians will be placed all around the 10-acre gardens featuring gorgeous blooming camellias. Mount Clare Connection, a talented Irish-American trio, will play in the heated waterfront pavilion to headline the party. Tickets include 2 drink tickets. Wednesday from 5–7:30 PM. Then there’s always. . .
Maryland Day 🔴 🟡
Maryland Day celebrates the founding of our beautiful state. It’s technically March 25 but since that’s a Tuesday, everyone’s celebrating this weekend. To mark the occasion, over 45 museums, tour companies, and historic sites are totally free or just a dollar. You can see them all online or in the Where in Annapolis app. They include familiar Scoop favorites like:
⚓ The Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park
⚓ Watermark Tours
⚓ Banneker - Douglass - Tubman Museum
As well as some we don’t often cover:
🏴☠️ The Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side
🏴☠️ Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetary
🏴☠️ Seafarer’s Yacht Club in Eastport
P.S. The Pride of Baltimore II will be at City Dock and deck tours are free!

In fact, the outside is even more important.
