In todayā€™s Naptown Scoop:

  • Ever been to a treeā€™s birthday party?

  • USNAā€™s new commandant (aka their dean)

Letā€™s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Severna Parkā€™s Tyler Lawhorne canā€™t be sidelined

Lady laxer Lauren here. šŸ„ Maybe itā€™s because Iā€™m fresh off my PSU lax reunion, but Severna Park Junior Tyler Lawhorneā€™s story struck a chord with me. A case of impetigo ran through the Falcons football team early last fall. Tyler took meds to fight the contagious skin condition, but an allergic reaction sent him to the hospital for a month. He couldnā€™t breathe right. A doctor couldnā€™t hear his right lung. Turns out it was partially collapsed and had to be reinflated.

Tyler thought his athletic career was over ā€” but now heā€™s back at midfield (the position with the most running, btw), helping the Falcons chase a ninth straight state title! Heā€™s also being recruited to play in college. Stay relentless, Tyler. We love your story. ($)

U.S. Naval Academy announces new commandant

Captain Gilbert Clark, Jr., was recently announced as the 91st commandant of the Naval Academy. A San Diego native, Capt. Clark graduated from the Academy in 1998 and was most recently a commander for the Naval Surface Group Southwest. After assuming the helm in June, heā€™ll be responsible for the day-to-day conduct, military training, and professional development of the 4,400 Midshipmen in Annapolis.

Kindergarten registration opens today

How does time fly by so fast? One minute theyā€™re figuring out how to crawl. Now theyā€™re waiting for the bus. Kindergarten registration in Anne Arundel County opens today at noon so jump online and request your childā€™s adorable little seat. Registration is determined by residence location, and while itā€™s not first-come, first-serve, early registration helps with overcrowding. When youā€™re ready to register, keep this handy:

  • Proof of identity

  • The child's original birth certificate or birth record

  • A copy of the studentā€™s immunization record

  • Two proofs of residency (deed/lease/mortgage and current utility bill)

  • Custody order (if applicable)

AACPS wants your input on their facilities

Every ten years, AACPS analyzes each of their educational facilities to address future and immediate space needs. Public comment allows school administrators to make recommendations on the districtā€™s needs and priorities. So how does your school show up? To share your thoughts, check out the districtā€™s new online portal before June 1 and let them know what you think.

WHATā€™S HAPPENINā€™

Itā€™s crab season šŸ¦€

There are plenty of reasons to appreciate this time of year. Longer daylight hours. Warmer temps (not that weā€™re experiencing those this week. . . ). The countdown to the end of the school year or maybe a vacation. And the start of Chesapeake Bay crab season. The season started April 1, which means crabbers have the official go-ahead to set their traps, cast their lines, and wield their nets.

But before you get too excited, remember there are rules in place. Not just etiquette (though there is that, too) but also legal restrictions. Fortunately, The BayNet has a thorough guide on when you need a license, what methods are legal, and how long the season lasts. Be sure to check it out if youā€™re prepping to catch crabs this spring (or summer, or fall).

Historic London Town & Gardens throws a Tree Birthday Party

What gift do you get a tree for its 200th birthday? Thatā€™s something to ponder before heading out to Historic London Town & Gardens on April 26th and 27th, when theyā€™ll be celebrating the 200th birthday of their incredible willow oak. Truth be told, the tree is likely older than 200 years, but at that point we all should stop counting. Definitely donā€™t put candles on the cake ā€“ fire hazard. Enjoy the garden, arts and crafts, and a scavenger hunt. Free with a suggested donation. April 26ā€“27, 10 AM ā€“ 3 PM, 839 Londontown Road, Edgewater

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
