Hard budget decisions
Anyone who’s ever chaperoned a school field trip knows schools are understaffed. And this year, the Anne Arundel School Board requested funding to cover 239 new positions within the school district. But . . . the county’s proposed budget only provides for 63 new positions, aka 26% of the ask. At $52 million, the budget increase is the largest for schools ever, but is still $45 million short of the Board’s ask. Board members acknowledged that this increase is an overall positive, noting that the County Executive’s work over the last six years has allowed them to dig out from decades of underfunding, and comes at a time when other districts are facing strict cuts. Here’s what’s included and what’s not. ($)
Anonymous Lawsuit Appeals City Dock Flood Protection Project
For a second it seemed that the City Dock Expansion project was set to move full force ahead. Last October, a lawsuit filed anonymously claimed the Historic Preservation Commission had “improperly approved” the City’s flood protection plan. But last month a judge rejected that claim, finding that the Harbormaster Building was essentially an office and therefore had no real historical value to be under the HPC’s purview, and the City went ahead with the demolition. Attorney Edward Hartman represents the anonymous plaintiff at the heart of this, and is now heading to the Appellate Court with the contention that the circuit court’s ruling was in direct conflict with city law.
While Hartman’s filed an appeal, there’s no guarantee it’ll be heard. At the time of writing, the Appellate Court’s website did not have the case listed on their schedule through June. ($)
Anne Arundel County confirms February “Cyber incident” as ransomware attack
In the first official update in about two months, Anne Arundel County released a statement confirming that the February “cyber incident” was indeed a ransomware attack.
Ransomware is when bad guys hold data hostage and demand a payment to release it. Like crime shows. Except instead of a kid, the hostage is a computer.
It looks like the bad guys hacked the Department of Health – likely getting names, addresses, and medical details. On the bright side, financial info probably wasn’t taken. Since the investigation is ongoing, the county doesn’t know how many people were affected or even whose data was stolen at this point. Once they do, they’ll contact folks directly.
In the meantime, stay vigilant. Cybercrime is everywhere. Naptown Scoop is the only email you can trust 😉
P.S. The county also said they upping security.
