Why you should do 100 pull-ups on Memorial Day, pancake game heats up, let's go the pool...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop ā the newsletter you wonāt be reading Monday because weāre taking the day off to honor the men and women who lost their lives fighting for our country. Have a memorable Memorial Day. Seeya Wednesday šŗšø
Letās get to it.
āRyan Sneddon
Why some people do 100 pull-ups on Memorial Day
Ever seen Lone Survivor? That Navy SEAL movie with Mark Wahlberg? Marky Markās boss in the movie is Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy. He sacrificed his life for the team when a mission went south. Sadly, the movie is based on a true story.
Michael Murphy used to love a little workout he called Body Armor:
1-mile run. 100 pull-ups. 200 push-ups. 300 squats. 1-mile run
Simple, but definitely not easy. For the tenth year running, gyms all around the USA will host the Murph Challenge on Memorial Day. Since 2014, itās raised over $2 million for the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
Oh, and I forgot. The true challenge is to do it wearing a 20-pound weight vest. Locally-owned Maxed Out Fitness is proud to be Annapolisā only official host of the 2023 Murph Challenge. If you think youāve got what it takes, register here.
Warning: Murph is some serious š©. Donāt attempt if you havenāt trained properly. Someone I invited last year worked so hard they had to go to the hospital.

Second Candace C.W. Antwine Military Service Awards
Three AACPS seniors were given $2,000 to remove cost barriers associated with joining the military this week in the second-ever Candace C.W. Antwine Military Service Awards presentation. Allow me to extend a preemptive āThank you for servingā to:
Lindsay Bailey of Northeast HS, who has enlisted in the Air Force.
Carlos Henderson and Christian Pearce of South River HS, who have both enlisted in the Navy.
These awards honor Candace Antwine, a military veteran who died while serving on the Board of Education in 2021.
Annapolis Blues notch first-ever win
Our new semi-professional soccer team beat Frederick like a drum last weekend. Striker Jacob Murrell absolutely lit up the 5ā0 scoresheet with a hat trick. The Blues are away again this weekend but the home opener is June 3 at 7 PM. But thereās a catch.
Some city Iāve never heard of called Detroit holds the NPSL regular season attendance record: 7,410. The Blues want us to hold that record and I think thatās a brilliant idea. Letās crush Detroit. Letās make sports history. Tickets cost less than a Chipotle burrito and the first friendly match was a ton of fun.
Annapolis-area lacrosse dominance
All four Annapolis-area teams who made it to a lacrosse state title game won that state title game this week. The Broadneck girls and the Severna Park boys did it in heart-attack fashion, winning by just one goal. The Broadneck boys and Severna Park girls shaved fewer years off their parentsā lives, winning by 10 and 4 goals respectively.
Three of the four teams win titles like my roommateās dog barks (i.e. a lot). Itās Broadneckās 3rd straight girls title. Itās Severna Parkās record-setting 7th straight boys' title. And while Severna Parkās girls havenāt won since 2019, this is the programās 15th overall. That ties Mt. Hebron for the most in MD girls lax history. Conversely, the Broadneck boys are less storied. They hadnāt won a title in 26 years. But just like the 2016 Chicago Cubs (plus or minus 82 years), they never quit and found a way to break the curse. ($)

Annapolis pancake game heats up
The Original Pancake House is now open at Westfield Annapolis. Let me shoot it to you straight. These are some of the best hotcakes you can get in a restaurant. And I know my pancakes. I used to make hundreds from scratch for my friends every Saturday morning before football games in college. All batters and sauces are made in the restaurant every day using the highest-quality ingredients.
When I wasnāt on the griddle, Original Pancake House was my choice in college. Iām very glad to see one open here. Btw . . . even though this is an international chain with 100+ locations, many franchises (including this one) are locally owned. Find OPH right across from California Pizza Kitchen in the former Brass Tap space at Westfield Annapolis.

Naval Academy Graduation
1,018 USNA seniors are set to graduate at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this morning. That also means more than 1,000 cars of parents, sponsor parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, godfathers, godmothers, cousins, grandparents, and well, you get it. The point is, treat driving around Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this morning like eating gas station sushi. Only if you absolutely must. . .
If you do want one final look at the most beautiful planes engineers ever created, the Blue Angels are scheduled to fly over graduation at 10:04 AM.
Memorial Day
Come Monday, people who believe everything they read on the Internet will start wearing white again. If youāre not joining the legion of traffic heading to the beach, hereās whatās up in town.
šÆ Annapolisā Memorial Day Parade is Monday. Step off is 10 AM sharp at the intersection of Amos Garrett Blvd and West St ā aka where Carpaccio is. The parade follows the usual route: down West, around Church Circle, then down Main to City Dock.
šļø City of Annapolis Monday trash collection will happen Tuesday. Tuesday collection happens Wednesday. Same with county trash collection. WMS facilities are closed.
š City and County offices are closed. So are the Stanton Center, Pip Moyer Recreation Center, and public libraries.
P.S. Bay Bridge traffic will be tortuous this weekend. Hereās when MDOT suggests crossing for the least misery.
Just accept it. Thereās no winning.
Opening weekend
Since itās oft considered the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is a great time for seasonal businesses to reopen. At least thatās what Capital SUP thinks. The Eastport-grown paddle purveyor is celebrating 10 years in business this season. You can celebrate the stoke with them at this seasonās kick-off party at the new Nautilus Point location Saturday from 3ā7 PM. Theyāll have food and beverages, Dan Haas will play music, and Rehab2Perform will have their famous recovery station. Congrats on double digits, Capital SUP!
Also opening Saturday: The Truxtun Park Pool. Daily passes start at just $4 for city residents. Season passes start at $130 for individuals but the real valueās in the family season pass. City residents pay $200 for a family of four and $20 for each additional kid over age 2. Full details and rates here.
