🍦A letter to our future intern

Eastport a Rockin', where to get May Day flowers, athlete of the year...

TOGETHER WITH
Brad Kappel key and anchor logo

Good morning, Annapolis. We’re officially less than one month away from the Blue Angels air show (5/22) so start thinking of excuses to pull your kids out of school. Suggestions include:

  • They’ve been invited to a philosophical debate on whether the week starts on Sunday or Monday

  • They’re conducting a critical societal experiment to discover if socks really do disappear in the dryer

  • They’re participating in an environmental study on the migration patterns of the F/A-18 Super Hornet

Is that last one too obvious?

An Eastport gem 💎

When most Annapolitans think of Eastport, it’s the area east of Sixth Street. Many aren’t aware that Eastport contains dozens more serene streets with incredible homes. Specifically, a small enclave between Hawkins and Wells Coves where opportunities rarely come to market. This is one of those rare opportunities.

This beautifully appointed, Craftsman home is turn-key, be it a weekend escape or a forever home. Its just under 4,000 square feet are perfectly laid out. All 4 bedrooms occupy the second level. The main level has an open layout anchored by a gourmet kitchen surrounded by the dining area, living room, and sunroom.

Downstairs is entertainment central with a family room, rec room, bar, and full bathroom. There’s even an elevator connecting all 3 levels and an enclosed garage – quite rare in Eastport.

Because they’re rare, opportunities in this neighborhood never last long. Contact Brad Kappel for your private tour right now if you’re interested.

THE DIGEST

May Day Basket Tradition 💐🧺

Our favorite Wednesday approaches. Wednesday, May 1. AKA the 69th Annual May Day Basket competition hosted by Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne. Blue Ribbons await the best flower baskets in Downtown Annapolis and Murray Hill. And that Blue Ribbon is your golden ticket to the Winner’s Tea on May 3. Some rules:

  • Residential arrangements must be in baskets

  • Businesses can use containers reflecting their business

  • All displays must be out by 10 AM on May 1 for judging and include your full name on a card (children need their age too)

Where to buy flowers? Peaceful Petals in Severna Park. The owner’s son, Jack, has an inoperable brain tumor. And when you buy flowers between April 27–30, tell the cashier you’re participating in May Day to donate to the Child Life Department at Johns Hopkins and get a special ribbon. Jack will pick one winning basket and the Peaceful Petals Flower Fairies will pick another. See full details here!

School scare in Severna Park

The Severna Park community had a brief scare yesterday while police investigated threats of possible violence. About 90 minutes later, they deemed the threats non-credible and lifted access restrictions from four schools. ($)

Ice Cream + Annapolis Hope = Can’t Miss It

Here at the Scoop, we like our tongues cooled by ice cream and our hearts warmed by good causes. That’s why we’re excited to collaborate on a fundraiser with Always Ice Cream for Annapolis Hope.

On May 15, stop by Always Ice Cream at 116 Annapolis St, Annapolis, MD 21401 or 196 Main St, Annapolis, MD 21401 and get a scoop of your favorite flavor. Better yet, make it a triple! 20% of all sales go straight to Annapolis Hope.

Want a Scoop from the Scoop? Naptown Scoop publisher Ryan will scoop alongside Always Ice Cream co-owner Mark Cohen from 2:30–3:30 PM on Main Street and 5:30–7:30 PM on Annapolis Street!

St. Mary’s girls lacrosse edges Severn 🥍⚜️

Annapolis’ fiercest private school rivalry faced off in girl’s lacrosse on Monday. During overtime, St. Mary’s junior Anna Ervin scored in a woman-up situation to lead the Saints to a 10-9 win. It was a big day for Anna, who also had 2 assists and 2 other goals, including the game-tying goal that forced OT. Teammate Sydney DeMaio led the scoring that day with 4 goals and 3 assists. Severn’s Bronwyn Bolton netted 3 goals and 1 assist, while teammates Giselle Torain and Peach Wellschlager each netted 2. ($)

Capital names Eric Penkala Athlete of the Year

Not too many people earn the distance triple crown – AKA state champ in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter runs. Eric Penkala of Southern High School became only the third runner to achieve that status since Maryland added the 800m run 40 years ago! The prestigious distinction made Penkala the Capital Gazette’s Athlete of the Year. Pardon the pun, but was anyone else even in the running? ($)
