Acting Superintendent, Chesapeake Conservancy's new HQ, St. Anne's School...
Good morning, Annapolis. If you were confused yesterday about a restaurant called Geo Pizza serving food at Burgers & Bands: Annapolis Edition, join the club. We’d never heard of it either (which is saying something) but that’s what the Eventbrite said 🤷. Turns out it was a typo on Eventbrite and Neo Pizza will be flipping burgers.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
A couple schools have new leaders
Chesapeake Conservancy bought their next HQ
Scoop’s latest identity crisis
Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST
Acting superintendent announced for Naval Academy
Vice Admiral Sean Buck retires Friday after 40 years in the U.S. Navy — 4 of which he spent as Superintendent of the Naval Academy. But as Admiral Buck cuts his retirement cake, the subsequent leadership isn’t quite . . . clear-cut. 🎂 Rear Admiral Yvette Davids was supposed to take charge upon Buck’s retirement, but Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville is blocking many military promotions to protest abortion policies. Rear Admiral Fred Kacher will serve as acting superintendent until the stubborn senator either gives up or gets his way.
New Head of School for St. Anne’s
In other local school leadership news, Connie Coker’s “boss” badge is here to stay. After 6 months as Interim Head of School at St. Anne’s School of Annapolis, she’ll permanently take the helm for the 2023–2024 school year. Connie is just the fourth Head of School following Fran Lukens (1987-2012), Lisa Nagel (2012-2020), and Andrea Weiss (2020 to 2023). Prior to this post, she served as Associate Head for 5 years.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Chesapeake Conservancy buys 1212 West Street
When one door closes, another opens. Or so the saying goes. It sure did for the Chesapeake Conservancy. After a failed attempt to build on a 19-acre plot near Quiet Waters Park, the nonprofit bought 1212 West Street for $2.5 million to host its office and other nonprofits.
The building will be called the Earl Center (just like the Quiet Waters facility) because when you donate the money to buy the building – à la James and Sylvia Earl – you get to name it.
Building at Quiet Waters failed for several reasons, most notably public backlash and damage from arson and a tornado. ($)

Final Wednesday night race. The weekly race series from Annapolis Yacht Club concludes for the summer on Wednesday (8/30). Boats line up at 6:45 PM – assuming there’s enough wind of course. Join the Woodwind to catch the races up close. Get tickets.
Pops in the Park. Two uplifting, danceable, and most importantly free concerts in Quiet Waters Park on Saturday and Sunday (9/2 & 9/3). Registration isn’t required but it does enter you in the raffle to win prizes!
