THE DIGEST

Thomas Point Lighthouse Manager among Preservation Award honorees

Call him a source of light. Call him a beacon of preservation. Or just call him John Potvin, manager of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. John recently received the Outstanding Individual Leadership at the Local Level award from the Maryland Historical Trust. Part of the 2024 Preservation Awards, the honor recognizes John’s years of work preserving the historic lighthouse, conducting tours, and training volunteers. Anyone familiar with John’s contributions will know this award is well deserved.

P.S. 2024 lighthouse tours are not yet completely sold out. Click here to take one!

Another day, another flood

Seems like flooding is the new normal in downtown Annapolis. High tides yesterday affected Dock Street and Compromise Street, among others. This presents a problem for traffic as well as commerce — because when water levels rise more than 3 feet, it begins to encroach on downtown Annapolis small businesses.

C+ for the South River

Arundel Rivers Federation recently announced the results of its water quality tests and gave the South River a C+ grade. 17 testing sites along the river showed it has poor dissolved oxygen levels but good clarity compared with other rivers. This grade is consistent with findings in 2022. So how can it improve? Reduced stormwater runoff and nutrient pollution from fertilizer and septics would be a good start. Here’s the full report.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Where the real locals shop

Shopping with local vendors in other countries is one of the best parts of traveling. But did you know there are plenty of opportunities to buy artisan-made goods right here at home? Like these two this weekend:

Annapolis Artisan’s Market šŸ’šŸ•ÆļøšŸ‘©ā€šŸ³

  • Friday (4/26): 10 AM-7 PM, Happy Hour 4–7 PM

  • Saturday (4/27): 10 AM-5 PM, Meet Food Network Chef Robin Daumit, who will be signing her new book, Dirt to Dish, & sharing stories & recipes from 11 AM– 2PM

  • Sunday (4/28): 10 AM–5 PM

1818 Margaret Ave or 1805 C&D Virginia St., Annapolis, MD 21401

Heroes Market šŸ³
Something called ā€œThe Mother of all Marketsā€ must be good. Heroes is hosting said market on Sunday (4/28) from 8–11 AM. Catch 37 vendors featuring the best food, drinks, treats, art, jewelry, & home dĆ©cor our community offers. Raffle benefits the Chesapeake K9 Fund & winners share of $7,500 in prizes. 1 Riverview Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21401

Local group buys huge shopping center šŸ›’

The Reliable Group, a local real estate investment company, just acquired The Market at South River Colony (SRC), a shopping center in Edgewater. The 118,000 sf center along Rt. 2 and Rt. 214 is home to tenants like Green Turtle, Weis Markets, and Walgreens.

George Shenas of Hyatt Commercial – who’s leasing the center – confirmed that the previously announced Tractor Supply Company deal is still happening. But there’s still 80,000 square feet left to lease. ā€œCurb appealā€ improvements should start immediately and as a bonus, Anne Arundel County is building a sidewalk to connect the shopping center to South River High School.

Acton Academy Children’s Business Fair šŸ“‹

All spots for young entrepreneurs at the Children’s Business Fair may be filled. But, you can still attend this Saturday (4/25) from 1–4 PM in the parking lot of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. It’ll showcase big ideas from 60 entrepreneurs ages 5–16 like driftwood sailboats, 3D-printed toys, and even a first novel.

Why this orthodontist office has beehives

Our story starts in 2002 when a beloved local orthodontist named Ted Berkinshaw decided to bring an unusual hobby to work.

Beekeeping.

Since that day, hundreds of patients have watched and enjoyed the bees. Dr. B's since retired from orthodontics and entrusted his practice to Dr. Julie Langguth. But he hasn't stopped beekeeping.

The hives are still at Annapolis Orthodontics and he’s teaching Dr. Julie everything he knows.

In fact, just last week, Dr. B and Dr. Julie introduced some new bees to their hives. And every summer, they harvest delicious honey. It's one reason we're proud to partner with Annapolis Orthodontics. We just hope they have some honey left over for us.

How to kickoff the Spring Sailboat show

Which local artist’s design will be on the 2024 Hospice Cup poster? We’ll find out tonight after Hospice Cup’s kickoff reception where attendees will vote for the work of either Bill Sutton, Brenda Larson, Jim Mackey, or Anna Bogh. What’s Hospice Cup? Glad you asked. It’s an annual sailing regatta that raises money for hospice care in the region.

šŸ—“ Want to attend the kickoff? It’s 6–8 PM at Backyard Boats Annapolis, and tickets are available here.
