THE DIGEST
Thomas Point Lighthouse Manager among Preservation Award honorees
Call him a source of light. Call him a beacon of preservation. Or just call him John Potvin, manager of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. John recently received the Outstanding Individual Leadership at the Local Level award from the Maryland Historical Trust. Part of the 2024 Preservation Awards, the honor recognizes Johnās years of work preserving the historic lighthouse, conducting tours, and training volunteers. Anyone familiar with Johnās contributions will know this award is well deserved.
P.S. 2024 lighthouse tours are not yet completely sold out. Click here to take one!
Another day, another flood
Seems like flooding is the new normal in downtown Annapolis. High tides yesterday affected Dock Street and Compromise Street, among others. This presents a problem for traffic as well as commerce ā because when water levels rise more than 3 feet, it begins to encroach on downtown Annapolis small businesses.
C+ for the South River
Arundel Rivers Federation recently announced the results of its water quality tests and gave the South River a C+ grade. 17 testing sites along the river showed it has poor dissolved oxygen levels but good clarity compared with other rivers. This grade is consistent with findings in 2022. So how can it improve? Reduced stormwater runoff and nutrient pollution from fertilizer and septics would be a good start. Hereās the full report.

Local group buys huge shopping center š
The Reliable Group, a local real estate investment company, just acquired The Market at South River Colony (SRC), a shopping center in Edgewater. The 118,000 sf center along Rt. 2 and Rt. 214 is home to tenants like Green Turtle, Weis Markets, and Walgreens.
George Shenas of Hyatt Commercial ā whoās leasing the center ā confirmed that the previously announced Tractor Supply Company deal is still happening. But thereās still 80,000 square feet left to lease. āCurb appealā improvements should start immediately and as a bonus, Anne Arundel County is building a sidewalk to connect the shopping center to South River High School.
Acton Academy Childrenās Business Fair š
All spots for young entrepreneurs at the Childrenās Business Fair may be filled. But, you can still attend this Saturday (4/25) from 1ā4 PM in the parking lot of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Itāll showcase big ideas from 60 entrepreneurs ages 5ā16 like driftwood sailboats, 3D-printed toys, and even a first novel.

SPONSORED BY ANNAPOLIS ORTHODONTICS
Why this orthodontist office has beehives
Our story starts in 2002 when a beloved local orthodontist named Ted Berkinshaw decided to bring an unusual hobby to work.
Beekeeping.
Since that day, hundreds of patients have watched and enjoyed the bees. Dr. B's since retired from orthodontics and entrusted his practice to Dr. Julie Langguth. But he hasn't stopped beekeeping.
The hives are still at Annapolis Orthodontics and heās teaching Dr. Julie everything he knows.
In fact, just last week, Dr. B and Dr. Julie introduced some new bees to their hives. And every summer, they harvest delicious honey. It's one reason we're proud to partner with Annapolis Orthodontics. We just hope they have some honey left over for us.
