A MESSAGE FROM NEMACOLIN AND 84 LUMBER

Did you know that Nemacolin is a sister company of 84 Lumber?

In 1987, Joseph A. Hardy III, founder of the 84 Lumber Company, set out to buy a few acres near a lake or stream for his daughter, Maggie Hardy, who loved fishing. But, instead, he fell in love with Nemacolin and purchased a large portion of land. What began as a thoughtful gift for his daughter turned into a lifetime project they would share, building something truly magical together. Today, the resort boasts luxury accommodations, innumerable activities, and fine dining – a full experience tediously cultivated by Hardy and her son, PJ Magerko Liquorice.

Experience real life magic in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, just over 3 hours from Annapolis! A charming adventure awaits, book your stay today at nemacolin.com.

THE DIGEST

Annapolis Maritime Museum buys Weems & Plath building ⚓️

The Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) is expanding by acquiring the Weems & Plath building, a 10,000-square-foot facility right down the street. Weems & Plath, makers of high-end nautical instruments, will continue operating from the building for the next four years.

Early next year, AMM will convert 1,800 sq ft for their expanding collections, archives, and library. Once it’s all theirs, the museum plans to explore new exhibits, a boat-building workshop, and other programming.

AMM’s been growing like a weed lately. They recently built a gorgeous pavilion at their Park Campus across Back Creek from the main museum. In fact, their free summer concert series, September Sunsets, starts there at 6 PM tonight with Rick and the Revolving Doors.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Westfield Annapolis Mall officially sold

This is no longer the worst kept secret in Annapolis. Four investors just bought Annapolis Mall.

  • Centennial – a Texas-based retail real estate investment firm

  • Sandeep Mathrani – former CEO of GGP (the second largest mall operator in the US until it was bought by Brookfield Property Partners)

  • Waterfall Asset Management – an investment firm focusing on specialty finance opportunities within asset-backed securities, loans, and commercial mortgage REIT sectors

  • Lincoln Property Company – one of the largest privately held real estate firms in the US

How much? We don’t know. All the buyers are privately held so they didn’t share the number. They did announce 2 new tenants, though.

  • Dave & Buster’s – the undisputed best place to host a 10th birthday (and let’s be real, a 28th too)

  • DICK’S House of Sport – a new experiential store from the famed sports store with a climbing wall, golf simulators with TrackMan™️ technology, and HitTrax™️ multi-sport cages so you can try before you buy.

Both stores are expected to open winter 2025 and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

3 weeks until Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars

This one’s for all the guys who read Scoop. Ladies, tell your men. Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars is 3 weeks away so we recommend you get a ticket before they sell out. This is the best guys night of the year in Annapolis. Basically everyone dresses in their best (see Scoop’s last 2 outfits below), then we head to Historic Annapolis’ beautiful Paca Garden to network, smoke cigars, and drink bourbon (although there’s beer and wine, too). It is one of my (Ryan’s) only personal “can’t miss” events of the year. Make sure to visit the dry cleaner early. The party is September 26. Get your tickets now!

đź“š For Love of the Library tix still available

Do you love the smell of books? Do you get excited to use the self-checkout machine and scan your new treasure trove of books? Do you just LOVE the library? ❤️

If so, consider attending For the Love of the Library, AACPL’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Tickets are still available and funds raised during this celebration help strengthen our local library system. This year’s event is September 27 from 6–8 PM at Busch Annapolis Library Branch. Get tickets. (Early bird ticket price ends 9/13 and there’s even a new no-alcohol ticket this year that’s even less money!)

MRE Tug of War đź’Ş

It’s time to choose a side: Annapolis or Eastport. TBH, you actually have about 2 months to choose a side, BUT the countdown to the annual Tug of War has begun. This competition — purportedly the longest international tug of war over water in the world — is set for November 2 at the crack of noon over Spa Creek. On one side will be the competitors from the City of Annapolis, and on the other side will be those from the Maritime Republic of Eastport. There’s still time to be a sponsor or vendor for the event.

🔎 Why tug of war? This tradition goes back to 1997 when the Spa Creek Bridge closed for construction, cutting off Eastport from the rest of Annapolis. The tug of war started as a playful “battle” for independence on the part of Eastport. At least, we think it’s playful…
