Maryland TacoFest, big Blues news, sailing for peace...

Good morning, Annapolis. It’s going to be 75º and sunny this week and 50º and cloudy this weekend. Life is cruel. If you’re lucky enough to be retired (or off work), play a few games of pickleball for me.

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Happy birthday to two awesome Annapolis small business owners, Joel Bunker (Curate & Brown Mustache Coffee) and Josh Funk (Rehab 2 Perform physical therapy)!

Simply Stunning Eastern Shore Estate

What you are about to see will take your breath away. I’ve written about luxury homes for Brad Kappel almost every week for 2 years. Not much stops me in my tracks. This one did.

200 Magdee Lane sits on almost 16 acres with 400 feet of Chesapeake Bay frontage. The Nantucket Shingle-style home – built in 2019 – is a collaboration between architect Becker Morgan Group, interior designer Erin Paige Pitts, and builder John Coursey. It’s 8,100 square feet with 6 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.

I could try and describe the waterfront pool, exquisite interior, and epic views. But to be honest, words would fail. To experience the true grandeur of 200 Magdee Lane, take the video tour.

If you want to secure the finest waterfront home for sale on the Chesapeake Bay, contact Brad Kappel for your private tour.

Quick Hits

Four wheels or two feet, be careful out there

Six Anne Arundel County residents have been injured or killed by vehicles in the last 4 months. The most recent incident closed the intersection at Bay Ridge Road and Cypress Road for hours on Monday and sent a pedestrian to Shock Trauma in Baltimore via helicopter. In January, 74-year-old Zarko Peruza was killed in a Hilltop Lane hit-and-run while bicycling. Bicycle Advocates for Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Vice President Alex Pline recently placed a ghost bike at the spot to honor Zarko. ($)

🚲️ Ghost bikes are white-painted bicycles placed near the scene of serious bicycle crashes. They serve both as a memorial to the cyclist and a reminder for drivers to share the road.

Luminis says, “Lose the masks.”

After 3 years, universal masking is no longer required at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Your surgeon will still wear one while she removes your appendix. But for all the areas where masks weren’t required pre-pandemic, feel free to demask. Patients can still request that their care team mask up during routine care.

Last chance to make an Impact100

Impact100 is simple. 100 women join, donate $1,000, then make a $100,000 grant to an organization serving Anne Arundel County. Last year they donated $81,000 to HOPE For All. We think it’d be swell if the grant’s even bigger next year. So if you’re a philanthropic woman, consider joining. The deadline’s April 15.

What’s Happenin’

Maryland TacoFest 🌮

We received the best press release in the history of press releases yesterday. The Maryland TacoFest is coming to Maryland Hall on Saturday, May 6. Fifteen of the best taquerias in the state are coming to Annapolis to see who’s numero uno. Along with the undisputed number 4 food in the world (tacos), the festival will feature churros (75th best) and ice cream (31st best). But it’s not all about food. Don’t miss the live dancing horse show, beer & margarita tent, tequila tastings, or mechanical bull.

Sailing for peace ⛵️

A wooden sailboat called The Golden Rule is currently on a 15-month journey around the Great Loop to promote a nuclear weapon-free world. Along with 99 other ports, The Golden Rule will visit Annapolis on April 24. Annapolis Yacht Basin will host a welcome ceremony the next day from 11–11:30 AM. The day after that, the crew will present the history of the 39-foot ketch and discuss the war in Ukraine.

The Golden Rule has sailed for peace since 1958 when four activists tried to sail to the Marshall Islands to protest nuclear weapons testing. She’s changed hands several times since and even sunk once, leading to a major restoration in 2010. ($)

Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card 📚️

And it just got even more fun. Have you heard of AACPL’s Library of Things catalog? It’s a bunch of stuff library cardholders can use to learn and have fun. They've got fishing poles, Chromebooks, museum passes, even ukuleles. AACPL just revealed a new partnership with the Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park which gives each library branch 2 checkout-able family passes (admission for 4 people). See all the things in the Library of Things at one of the coolest domains around: www.aacpl.net/things

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

Civil News

ADU bill soars through County Council

Anne Arundel County Council unanimously passed Bill 6-23 Monday night. This makes it easier to add an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) by expanding qualifying lots and structures and exempting ADUs from development impact fees. But don’t expect all your neighbors to become Chip & Joanna Gaines this week. ADUs will likely appear slowly due to the investment required. Per data from 2016–2019, build costs ranged from $112k to $285k. And that was before covid jacked the price of shiplap walls by 252%. ($)

Hope is all we have

There’s no cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). But the FDA just approved a breakthrough treatment that can slow the disease by 50%! That’s why this year’s Night to Fight FA is even more special to the Burrows Hill Foundation. The foundation has raised more than 700,000 dollars to fund FA research. We’ll be joining them on April 15 for the fifth annual Night to Fight to raise even more and hope you will too.*

Let’s go, girls!

Navy women’s lacrosse is on an eight-game win streak and the pollsters have noticed. They cracked the national rankings at #25 two weeks ago, sneaked to #24 last week, and jumped to #20 this week after a pair of league play wins — a devastating 17-6 smackdown of Lafayette and a 15-10 victory over Colgate. The Midshipmen travel to Boston this weekend for another league play matchup against Boston University.

Big news for the Blues

It’s a big week for the Annapolis Blues. First, they announced a huge new partner, Luminis Health. Then they released the full 2023 season schedule. Matches run from May 13 to July 9. Five away. Five home; plus the Community Shield. One thing this season seat holder is excited about is 5 & 7 PM kickoffs. There’s nothing like a game under the lights at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Individual tickets are on sale now for $8 each. Season seats, which come with a host of benefits, are $80 for kids and $100 for adults. Learn more.
