Kids on the Creek, Sounds of the Seventies, Annapolis Hope updates

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop. We’re the ASMR of local news — refreshing, mentally stimulating, and oh-so-satisfying.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Kids on the Creek 🛶

  • Sounds of the Seventies 🎶

  • Annapolis Hope updates 🏠️

Let’s get to it.

— Lauren Burke Meyer, Dylan Roche, & Ryan Sneddon

84 Lumber is a proud supporter of our nation’s veterans. Did you know that each 84 Lumber store nationwide has a purple parking spot, reserved for injured combat veterans?

The color purple symbolizes the purple heart, and these spots serve as a visual reminder of our unwavering support and gratitude to those who have served. 84 also offers a 10% discount for both active and retired military. From all of us at 84 Lumber, we wish you a very happy Fourth of July!

ANNAPOLIS HOPE FUNDRAISER UPDATE

THE DIGEST

A very warm welcome

We’d like to wish a huge welcome to the 419 new subscribers who’ve joined us in the last week. Since you’re just now joining us, we’d like to catch you up on some cool things that happened before you subscribed – some cool stuff from our advertisers and some just because it’s plain cool.

Floral philanthropy for Annapolis Hope 🌳

Season to Season Horticultural Services cultivated something pretty special last week. For their big plant sale, they decided to donate 10% of proceeds — a grand total of $528 — to Annapolis Hope. Kudos and thanks to Season to Season and all the green thumbs who came out to buy plants and make this fundraiser a success. Annapolis Hope is buying the family home of the late Nick Mireles, who was lost to gun violence last year, to prevent their eviction.

Coldwell Banker steps up for Annapolis Hope

The most amazing part of our Annapolis Hope fundraiser has been local people stepping up unsolicited to help. You saw Wrabyn do it. J. McLaughlin’s doing it next week. And you just read about Season to Season Horticultural Services. Now it’s Coldwell Banker Realty’s turn. They kicked things off with a $1,500 grant from the CB Cares Foundation and throughout the month of July, they’ll be collecting donations from agents, clients, and visitors to the office for Annapolis Hope. They’ll even be collecting for Annapolis Hope in front of their Church Circle office during Annapolis’ Fourth of July Parade this week!

So thanks, Coldwell Banker Church! Y’all are amazing and we’re so grateful for your help.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Sounds of the Seventies 🎶

Music is a pretty powerful force, and Annapolis Jazz & Roots aims to demonstrate that with its upcoming “Sounds of the Seventies” concert on August 3 at 4 PM at Eastport United Methodist Church. This fundraiser highlights unforgettable music from a decade when political discord gave way to positive advances and reforms in social justice.

We also heard the theming for this event is going to be groovy — 70s-style refreshments will be for sale and dig out your bell bottoms because 70s clothing is encouraged! The show will include songs from artists like Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye, Simon & Garfunkel, and Aretha Franklin.

Rotary’s 79th Crab Feast 🦀

How many crabs do you think the Annapolis Rotary has served over the 79 years they’ve held their summer crab feast? We can’t fathom a number, but the Rotary estimates this year’s feast will serve around 350 bushels . . . as well as 3,400 ears of corn, hundreds of watermelons, and 1,800 hot dogs.

Be sure you’re there to eat your fair share at this year’s event. The Old Bay-licious tradition is set for August 2 from 5–8 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and proceeds from ticket sales help the Rotary support nonprofits and other community groups.

Thanks to the Rotary’s partnerships with Annapolis Green and Veteran Compost, the event is Zero-Waste again this year, meaning everything will be composted or recycled. Annapolis Green's NAPTOWN TAPs will be on-site so you can fill up your compostable cup with fresh, filtered water! ♻️

Theater Talk Tuesday

CTM presents The Miser
Classic theater feels a lot more approachable (and delicious) when it’s performed in the outdoor courtyard at Reynolds Tavern, as Classic Theatre of Maryland does every year. This time around it’s The Miser, Moliere’s comedy about a nasty miser and his household trying to get one over on him. See it tonight at 7:30 PM or any Tuesday in July and August (except July 16 & August 20).

Save the date: Kids on the Creek 🛶

It’s back for the first time after a 3-year hiatus: Kids on the Creek gives families the opportunity to learn about the water via complimentary boat rides on August 24 from 11 AM–3 PM at the Eastport Yacht Club. In addition to the boat rides, all of the club’s campus along Spa Creek will be open and dedicated to learning and activity stations like:

  • Creek Crafts

  • Creek Critters Touch Tank

  • Paddle boards and kayaks available for kids to try

Participants must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult. Get details.

Looking for more ways to get your kids into water-based adventures before August 24? Check out our guide!

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
