TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Unfortunately, the Motorboaters didn’t win the men’s league hockey championship last night. But even if I’m not a champion, Scoop writer Dylan sure is. He finished a 100-mile ultramarathon last weekend. – Ryan

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • How many oysters does Boatyard sell?

  • Anne Arundel FD’s new boat

  • Burritos for Barks

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Anne Arundel Fire Department gets a new life-saving tool

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department just got a new boat. The Annapolis Neck Fire Station (Station 8) just put a new 26-foot dive rescue boat into its fleet. The aluminum hull boat, internally called BT8, is equipped with twin 150hp outboards for a 43 mph top speed, side scan sonar, and a 7-person capacity. Every response will have at least two special operations-trained rescue divers. BT8 is stationed off Thomas Point Road. And the fire department isn’t done shopping. Two new 50’ Metal Shark Defiant NXT Fireboats will join BT8 later this year.

The Boatyard Bar & Grill sells tons of oysters

Literally. That’s not an exaggeration or even a guess. Oyster Recovery Partnership just released its top 10 shell recycling partnerships and Boatyard is #4 on the list with 846 bushels. That’s about 50,000 pounds of oyster shells, AKA 25 tons AKA 11 F-150 pickup trucks AKA more than a 48-foot Hinckley yacht. Thanks for your great work, Boatyard crew! Oysters are super important for our Bay.

P.S. We have over 30 other restaurants in Annapolis who recycle oyster shells with Oyster Recovery Partnership. Here’s the full list 🦪

AACPS Pre-K Enrollment opens May 7 🍎

LOCAL BUSINESS

Meet Forward Brewing’s new boat, Sally IVth 🚤 🍻 🦪

Photo: Lee Snead

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department isn’t the only one with a new boat. Forward Brewing opened in Eastport during the pandemic with a take-out window, a parking lot beer garden, and a dream. Well, lifelong Annapolitan and Forward Brewing Owner Cam Bowdren is once again embracing his “Forward” mantra. Read more about that in Chesapeake Bay Magazine.

He recently bought a workboat on Facebook Marketplace and turned it into what’s sure to become a classic Annapolis experience. You can book 90-minute charters for up to six passengers. On board, you’ll enjoy Forward beers and “snackle boxes” while you cruise around Annapolis Harbor. You can even hire an oyster shucker! And yes, Forward recycles the shells. Click here to book the boat!

Building muscle has never been so easy…

Today’s technology makes it easier than ever before to increase muscle tone, improve function, and enhance quality.

On May 20, Warrior Medical will show you why and how when The Great North American Form, Fit, and Function Tour stops by Annapolis. The event will include demonstrations of borderline miracle tech like EmSculpt Neo and Emsella.

A 30-minute EmSculpt Neo session is basically like doing 20,000 crunches while radio waves literally melt your fat. You really just have to experience it to understand. Reserve your spot for May 20th today and take advantage of special pricing available exclusively at the event!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Burritos for Barks

For 10 years, Samaritan House, a local addiction recovery center, has hosted a unique fundraiser called Burritos for Beds. Unlike many fundraisers, which happen at night with lots of free alcohol, Burritos for Beds is a dry, early morning breakfast burrito fundraiser at Chevys Fresh Mex. And yes, there’s no apostrophe in Chevys. So, wait, why does the headline say Burritos for Barks?

Because this year, Burritos for Barks (Beds) is raising money for an exciting new program at Samaritan House, animal-assisted therapy. So tomorrow morning (5/1), leave for work a little early and show up a little late. Because Burritos for Barks is happening from 7–10 AM at Chevys on Solomons Island Road. And bring your wallet, because last year’s event raised $90,000!

Bands in the Sand GA tickets on sale tomorrow

Naptown Scoop doesn’t pick favorites. OK fine we totally do. And Bands in the Sand is definitely one of our favorite events of the year. Why? Because it’s an incredible night on the beautiful beach at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (who happens to be the beneficiary of funds raised), there’s terrific food, and sometimes Brad Kappel lets us come on his boat. This year, the premier Jimmy Buffett tribute band, The Landsharks, are headlining and Misspent Youth and Jah Works return as openers.

Bands in the Sand is June 8. And while VIP and Committee tickets have been on sale, GA tickets go on sale tomorrow (5/1) at 9 AM. Bands in the Sand always sells out so, treat this like a Southwest flight and check in right on time. Here’s the link.

P.S. It’s called Bands in the Sand. If I catch any of you calling it “Bands in the Sands” you won’t be allowed to eat any oysters at Choptank’s Oyster Reef.

Theater Talk Tuesday 🎭

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: When 15-year-old Christopher finds himself suspected of his neighbor’s dog’s murder, he’s determined to solve the mystery. But his detective work leads him on a journey that upturns his world. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. Opens this Thursday (5/2) at Colonial Players of Annapolis. Note: Contains adult language and high-intensity audio and lighting effects like strobe lighting. Sensory-friendly performances on May 11 and May 16. Tickets.

The Talent Machine Company has churned out children’s theater performances for 35+ years. Most recently, they won the All-Round Production Excellence Award by The British Players for last summer’s production of Mean Girls. The coolest part? They even beat many adult company entries. Talent Machine alum and Annapolis native Christine Martini led the cast of teens ages 14 to 18.

Save these Talent Machine show dates: Annie Jr., May 17–18 at the Mid Atlantic Community Church in Davidsonville. Musical comedy Young Frankenstein, July 12–21, featuring many performers from the award-winning Mean Girls production. Oklahoma, August 16–25. Young Frankenstein and Oklahoma will be performed at the Pascal Center for the Performing Arts on AACC’s campus.

Unlike last year’s unusual situation where Navy had 4 captains, Coach New picked only two this year, linebacker Colin Ramos and fullback Daba Fofana. The first home game is August 31 against Bucknell. We can’t wait to see these two in action.
