Crabcake Review E9, Annapolis state of emergency, Foodie Friday…

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop, the local newsletter that’s as satisfying as slamming your laptop shut at 5 PM on Friday. Or 4 PM. Your secret’s safe with us 😉

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Crabcake Review S3E9: The Alley 🦀 🎂

  • Annapolis declares state of emergency 🌊

  • Foodie Friday 🍹

Let’s get to it.

Crabcake Review S3E9: The Alley at the Naval Academy Club ⚓️ 🦀

This crabcake review is bittersweet . . . Sweet because we went to the Naval Academy Club. If you ask Captain Chris, everything (including crab pretzels and crab cakes) tastes like patriotism there. The venue is a tough location to top. The bitter part is because it’s our season finale! Here’s the review!

Luckily, y’all don’t have to wait until next summer for more crabcakes. The Maryland Seafood Festival is September 14–15 and it’s a can’t-miss event! Learn more and score tickets!

🌊 Coyote overboard! Tropical Storm Debby damaged the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse’s dock, carrying off Drew, the coyote decoy who keeps seagulls away. Drew (and the dock) were found floating 7 miles from the lighthouse. Maguire Marine Construction is making a temporary dock.

🚨 Annapolis declares state of emergency 🚨

On August 14, Mayor Buckley declared a state of emergency after Tropical Depression Debby caused significant flooding, reaching 4.54 ft above normal. The state of emergency will help City staff move quickly with recovery efforts. City officials labeled Friday’s flooding event “one of the ten worst” in Annapolis’ history.

The city is seeking additional emergency funds to aid downtown businesses, as previous flood relief grants from the January storm expired in June. Assessments by the Department of Planning and Zoning report that 19 businesses and nonprofits suffered $162,000 in revenue and equipment losses. The city is exploring various state funding options. NAPS adds 8th grade ✏️

For the longest time, the Naval Academy Primary School was just that: a primary school. But as it heads into its 75th year, it’s adding 8th grade. Now officially Naval Academy Primary & Secondary (and thus still NAPS for short), the school has expanded the secondary school options it added during the COVID pandemic (6th & 7th grade). ($)

@NAPTOWNSCOOP

Where were we Wednesday? 📸

ANSWER: Every time we visit Maryland Hall for a concert, ballet, class, or art exhibit, we are reminded what an amazing, artsy place this is. So on a recent trip, we snapped this pic from the 3rd floor stairwell. Isn’t it lovely in its historic simplicity? We thought so.

Thanks for playing and congrats to @allisondurbin, @hereapopupshop, and @nicole_s_kelsch for being the first 3 to answer correctly.

P.S. Y’all – what the heck is Maryland Hall of Fame? Gentle reminder to watch your autocorrects. Hall of Famers got DQed.

A MESSAGE FROM HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE

Creating Moments that Matter

Just as different communities celebrate life in their own way, they also approach end of life in their own way. Creating meaning for everyone means reaching out to families, community centers, the business and faith communities, and others to learn what more you need from your hometown hospice.

As Maryland’s largest independent not-for-profit hospice, Hospice of the Chesapeake is committed to making hospice, supportive and bereavement care accessible to everyone. Like the donated quilts that comfort patients, the hospice team is a patchwork of experts celebrating and honoring our differences in one beautiful blanket of support.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Foodie Friday 🍦🦀🍹

As we are inclined to do here at the Scoop, we are trying something new and fun 😃 You’ve seen our ground-breaking coverage of crabcake reviews and oyster hot spots. Now we bring you Foodie Friday, highlighting some new food spots, cool things happening in the restaurant world, and specials you just gotta try. Are we gonna do this every week? Every month? Honestly, who knows? Let us know if you like it:

🍹 It’s National Rum Day today. Lucky for us, we have a local option – LYON RUM – available to help us celebrate. LYON RUM is distilled in St. Michaels and is the brainchild of Jaime Windon, a hospitality pro of many years who helped revive the distilling industry in Maryland. Heck, she even helped found the Maryland Distillers Guild (who knew that was a thing?)

Here’s a fun drink recipe to try for Rum Day:

Papa Doble

This drink is fabled to be a favorite of Scoop’s favorite writer, Ernest Hemingway, and is still a bestseller at the legendary Key West bar, Sloppy Joe’s. You can follow their recipe, or here’s a simpler one:

1 shot Lyon White Rum (or two shots to make it a true “doble”) + grapefruit juice (fresh-squeezed is best!) + a splash of grenadine (or maraschino liqueur)

🥯 Sometimes you want an amazing bagel but you can’t be bothered to leave the house. Well check this out: Naval Bagels just announced online ordering is available at the Edgewater location. Bring on that Old Bay bagel with lox . . . without moving a muscle. Life is good. 😎

🇫🇷 Anybody planning to binge watch Season 4 of Emily in Paris this weekend? Pick up a pack of Emily in Paris-themed Classic French Macarons by Pasquier for your viewing party from Annebeth’s on Maryland Ave. They have the best stuff! Also – no judgement if you binge the macarons too. 🥰

Enjoy Foodie Friday? Ideas for other specials or features for us to include? Let us know: [email protected].

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
