What is Cash for Schools, Ogle Hall museum plan denied, Broadneck Grill sold...

Good morning, Annapolis. Why are robot wedding anniversaries always in the fall? Because they’re autumn-mated. 🍦

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Ogle Hall museum plan denied

  • Broadneck Grill in Edgewater sold

  • Cash for Schools 💵 4️⃣ đŸŤ

Let’s get to it.

As you can see, it’s still anyone’s hunt with only 2 of 20 registered teams earning points so far. My gut says the leaderboard will heat up this weekend.

It’s not too late to join! Team Blaney just registered yesterday. Click here to join the fun.

THE DIGEST

What is Cash for Schools? đŸ”¨

Next time you run into K&B True Value (Annapolis) for a project, make it count. When you check out anytime now through October 31, you can donate to a school of your choice. And thanks to generous sponsors, it will be matched twice! AKA your $1 = $3. You can also donate directly here. The schools get the money with no restrictions so they can do whatever they need with it.

Sponsors include K&B True Value, Bay Ridge Wine & Spirits, Evolve Direct Primary Care, Ledo Pizza, and Eye on Annapolis. K&B True Value is located at 912 Forest Dr, Annapolis, MD 21403.

An Ogle Hall update, but make it texting

Investors: Yooo, we just bought Ogle Hall for $4.65 million. Can we turn it into an inn?
City: Sure!
Investors: Cool cool. Can we turn the rest into a social club?
City: Nope.
Investors: Ok then. What about a museum?
City: Nah fam. Sounds like you’re just trying to rebrand your social club.
Investors: Alright. We’ll try again later.

Translation: The City of Annapolis denied Fair Winds Capital Investments’ plan to turn the part of Ogle Hall that won’t be a hotel into a museum. Planning and Zoning Director Christopher Jakubiak said the plan was a “guise, concealing the actual proposed use of the property.” Fair Winds attorney Phil Dales declined to comment on that and said Fair Winds wants to work with residents to come up with a plan that works for everyone. LOCAL BUSINESS

🏗️ Construction Update: What’s going up at the intersection of Spa and Hilltop?

According to permits (and confirmed by the organization’s website), the construction at the corner of Spa and Hilltop is a Primrose School. Primrose School is a franchised early childhood education center with over 450 schools nationwide.

  • Primrose’s parent company is owned by Roark Capital Group, a private equity firm with several portfolio companies you may recognize like Miller’s Ale House, The Cheesecake Factory, Orangetheory, and many others.

9 great years of great margaritas

New ownership is taking over Broadneck Grill and Cantina in Edgewater. Say goodbye this Saturday (9/30) at 8 PM with special music, raffles, and all the drinks you can drink. Two reasons to be excited: Broadneck Grill in Cape St. Claire is still open and the new owners in Edgewater plan to open a farm-to-table restaurant. Everybody wins! 74 W Central Ave, Edgewater, MD 21037.

Where the pros are networking this week

Because why print business cards if you’ve got nowhere to hand them out?

Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars. This is one of Historic Annapolis’ most popular fundraisers and we’ll sum up why in 3 reasons: all-inclusive tickets, an amazing group of people, and a killer setting. Tickets start at just $100. 6–9 PM, Thursday (9/28) at the William Paca House & Garden – 186 Prince George St, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars 2023

Green Drinks. Green Drinks may sound like a St. Patrick’s Day special at Galway Bay, but it’s actually a meetup for people who care about the environment. Thursday’s meetup celebrates National Drive Electric Week with specials to support sustainability and the Annapolis BayGrass Festival. 9/28 from 5:30–7:30 PM at the Market House – 25 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Save this Date: Community Concert Series Kick Off

The Anne Arundel Community Concert Association kicks off a new season (its 71st) on October 4. First up: the Eastport Oyster Boys. They call themselves the “musical goodwill ambassadors of the Chesapeake” because the times (and tunes) are good. The show is at Severna Park High School at 7:30 PM on 10/4. Season subscriptions are $70 and individual tickets at the door are $30.

Fall Fest on Maryland Ave

We had so much fun at West Annapolis Oktoberfest on Sunday. Sure, it was damp but that didn’t dampen our spirits. And speaking of spirits👻, Fall is strutting in like it owns the place. The next closed-down street party on our calendar (we love a closed-down street party) is the Maryland Ave Fall Festival.

If you want to join the fun, head on over to Maryland Avenue on Sunday 10/22 between 10 AM–5 PM. There will be food, music, beer, and some of the best shopping in Annapolis. There’s also a parade of dogs in Halloween costumes so have your camera ready.

CIVIL NEWS

It’s (almost) the law ⚖️

Come Sunday (10/1), there are a few new laws hitting Maryland’s books:

  • Firearms restrictions: Even with a concealed-carry permit, you’ll be banned from bringing firearms into schools, healthcare facilities, university buildings, stadiums, and more.

  • Drug tests: Hospitals will be required to test patients for fentanyl when conducting urine screenings.

  • Spousal defense: The law prohibiting prosecution for committing sexual crimes against a legal spouse will be repealed.

  • And more ($)

Navy starting center and captain retires

Lirion Murtezi (right) poses by the Kosovo plaque at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Photo from navysports.com

Lirion “Bear” Murtezi has had a remarkable journey. At age 5, the future Navy football center emigrated from Kosovo to Pittsburgh to escape an economy destroyed by war. Lirion found a home in football, starting all four years of high school in a highly competitive part of Pennsylvania.

Sadly, Lirion’s days as a football player are over. The Academy announced this week that due to problems with his spinal cord, Lirion had no choice but to retire. But the Bear didn’t earn his nickname by giving up.

He’s since transitioned into a student-coach role. He attends team meetings, works with players every day on the practice field, and still travels with the team. Lirion will graduate in May with a degree in political science.

Scoop wishes you the best, Lirion. Thanks for embodying the American Dream.
