THE DIGEST

Scout’s honor

Annapolis has a new claim to fame: Home to the president of the Boy Scouts of America. Annapolis resident Roger Krone stepped in last Friday as the BSA’s new top executive after Roger Mosby retired. What are Roger’s qualifications?

First, he’s an Eagle Scout. Second, among other prestigious business experience, he just retired after spending 10 years as CEO of Leidos – a $14 billion defense contractor headquartered in Virginia.

Roger’s got his work cut out for him. BSA is dealing with the aftermath of 80,000+ former scouts who say they were sexually abused, a $2.4 billion bankruptcy filing, and plummeting membership. W️e️’re rooting for you to bring Boy Scouts back to its former glory, Roger! ($)

Adjunct professors teach “Unionizing 101”

Adjunct professors at Anne Arundel Community College have been trying to unionize for 8 years. Last week, they secured enough votes to unionize with representation from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). They hope to bargain for higher pay, more benefits, and workers’ rights. At the current pay scale, adjuncts who teach three 3-credit classes receive no benefits beyond sick leave. Adjuncts at AACC outnumber tenure-track professors 3:1.

AACC President Dawn Lindsay has long opposed the unionization effort but said AACC looks forward to negotiating in good faith with the SEIU. ($)

Grade A for Luminis Health 🏆

Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center just received its 10th consecutive “A” grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. It’s one of just 152 hospitals nationwide — and the only one in Maryland — to maintain that rating since 2018. Congrats to all the nurses, doctors, and other staff who work every day to make this possible. You probably don’t hear this too often at work so we’ll say it now. . . THANK YOU!

Speaking of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, this is a great time to share that Fish For a Cure raised over $650,000 for the Cancer Survivorship Program and the Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute.

Our friends on Team Reel Counsel raised the most money for the second year in a row, bringing in an astounding $166,970.20. Lady Jen and Team Yorktel topped the Open League fundraising with $72,759.01 – thereby earning an invitation into the Legends League for next year.

New female focused co-working space

Since last December, Fount + Flourish has built a community supporting women through coaching and community building events. Now, founder Bailey Feldman is opening a co-working space for women – the first of its kind in Annapolis. It includes a conference room, lounge space, and of course, good vibes. Celebrate the grand opening with them at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Thursday (11/9) from 5–9 PM. Click here to RSVP. 100 Cathedral Street, Suite 7, Annapolis, MD 21401.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Checking in on the Acton Academy

Back in August, we wrote a profile of the Hardgrave family. These Arnold residents couldn’t find the perfect school for their children, so they started their own. What followed was a brand new Acton Academy – part of a global network of 270 other Acton Academies.

Now that they’re a little into the first school year, the Hardgraves think it’s time for everyone to get a look inside. So they're hosting an open house this Saturday (11/11) from 2–5 PM. You can learn about the Acton Academy and Maryland Curiosity Lab while your kids pet mini cows and other farm animals, eat s’mores, and make slime. RSVP here.
