ICYMI, the folks at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse recently added a bird poop-preventing coyote. Thatā€™s not his official name though. Lighthouse manager John Potvin suggested we run a naming contest. So get those creative juices flowing. Enter your suggestion here by Friday (1/12).

Youā€™ll vote for the winner next week and theyā€™ll get two lighthouse tour tickets for the upcoming season ($180 value)!

THE DIGEST

Crownsville woman sending husbandā€™s remains to space again šŸš€

Warning: Grab some Kleenex for this one šŸ˜¢

Oren Whyche-Shaw of Crownsville is sending her late husband's ashes ĀĀĀā€” along with those of several Star Trek cast and creators ā€” into space. Lt. Col. William "Bill" Jefferson Shaw always dreamed of being an astronaut but couldnā€™t because of poor eyesight. He became a career Air Force officer instead. Following his unexpected death in 2017, his wife sent his ashes into space with a company called Celestis.

Today, a unique opportunity with Celestis allows more of Billā€™s ashes and Orenā€™s DNA to join a Star Trek-focused launch. Since she and Bill are/were lifelong Trekkies, she said, ā€œI thought this would be great, for the two of us to be in the universe, basically, forever.ā€ ($)

1,800 new trees in Crownsville

The County recently collaborated with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to plant 1,800 native trees in Crownsville. In one day, crews planted 15 different native trees across a 10-acre field that was otherwise unused. Take it from the Lorax: native trees support native species, so itā€™s a big win.

Midshipman dies while on holiday leave

Tragedy hit the Naval Academy last week. 22-year-old Midshipman First Class (Senior) Mason Halsey died while at home on holiday leave in Mississippi. The circumstances around his death are under investigation. Mason was a member of the 5th Company, a political science major, and a member of the Navy spirit team. Our hearts go out to Masonā€™s family, friends, and teammates as they mourn this loss.

LOCAL BUSINESS

New drive-thru Starbucks

Sometimes you just donā€™t want to leave the car. And for those days, thereā€™s a new drive-thru Starbucks that just opened at 2122 Generals Highway. While Scoop loves a local coffee shop, locals work here too so roll on up. This is a soft opening so please bring your patience as you order a venti Oleatoā„¢ iced shaken espresso with oat milk and toffeenut.

Coaches Corner ā›³ļø

Kylee Sullivan was announced as the Navy womenā€™s golf teamā€™s head coach this week after serving as interim coach since August. Kylee helped the team win five team and individual titles and set several school records over the last two seasons as assistant coach. She played her own college golf at Oakland University and coached at Ferris State before coming to Navy. Congrats, Kylee!

Jacob Busic transferring to UCLA

After being denied a fifth-year playing football at Navy, defensive end Jacob Busic is taking his two years of eligibility to UCLA where heā€™ll be reunited with the coach that originally recruited him, Ken Niumatalolo. They wonā€™t work together too often however since Ken was just named tight ends coach.

Jacob already signed his ā€œ2 for 7ā€ paperwork at the Academy so heā€™ll be required to pay for the time he spent there; he said UCLA is giving him NIL money which will help him with the cost. Weā€™re sad to see you go, Jacob, but as we say in Annapolis, fair winds and following seas! ($)
