TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Did you know there’s a dragon sculpture in Krakow that breathes real fire every 3 minutes? All in favor of Annapolis building giant blue crab that snaps its claws every 3 minutes and releases a puff of Old Bay on the hour say, “Aye!”

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolis Film Festival

  • DNR photo contest

  • A special podcast honoring Pete Medhurst

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Navy Football’s Historic 2024 Season 🏈 âš“️

Predicted to finish 11th in the American Athletic Conference, Navy Football’s team defied everyone’s expectations (except ours of course) and finished third. Here are just a few milestones from the historic 2024 season:

  • The team’s 10-3 record gets them into an exclusive club. Only 5 other teams in school history have won 10+ games in a season.

  • The Armed Forces Bowl was Navy's 25th bowl appearance.

    • First SEC bowl win since 1954; first SEC win overall since 2004.

    • Overcame a 14-0 deficit to beat Oklahoma 21-20.

    • QB Blake Horvath set a school record with a 95-yard touchdown run.

  • Led the nation in red zone TD percentage (37 of 42).

  • Punter Riley Riethman set a school-best 44.4 career punting average. And was named an Academic All-American to boot.

  • NAVY BEAT ARMY 31-13 in their 125th meeting, also defeating Air Force to claim the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy.

Resilience Authority creates new effort focused on Eastport

If you feel like you’re hearing about more floods than ever in Annapolis, you’re not wrong. We saw a record number of flood days in 2024, and sea levels are rising. That’s where the Resilience Authority of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County comes in. It’s a joint venture between the City and County to fight sea level rise. And it’s newest project is Eastport.

It’s called the Annapolis Maritime Resilience Initiative and it seeks to use a whole bunch of data, along with a whole lot of community feedback, to decide where to focus Resilience Authority efforts. It’s funded by a near million-dollar grant from the EPA and the first public meeting is this Tuesday, February 4 at 6 PM at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center. Suggestions will be taken and there will be more public meetings later. ($)

Souper Bowl Sunday

Nope, that’s not a typo. Before the big game next Sunday, the 19th Annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House is serving up soups to raise money for the Light House Homeless Prevention Support Center. Guest chef Brian Shallcross, GM of the Chesapeake Baysox, is making soups along with side salads, rolls, and desserts. Admission is free, but donations are requested for the Light House. This year’s goal is $10,000. Since 2007, the SOUPer Bowl has raised over $60,000 for the Light House.

Lunch is served 11:30 AM–1:30 PM at Heritage Baptist Church. 1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401.

DNR Waterfowl Photo Contest

Calling all shutterbugs: the MD Dept. of Natural Resources is looking for new cover art for its latest hunting and fishing licenses. The new “hard cards” are meant to be limited edition collectibles that serve as your annual license so the DNR is hosting a photo contest to find the perfect cover art. . AI will not be accepted. If this contest seems familiar, it’s a rebranding of the migratory bird stamp design contest, which ended once those stamps went the way of the dodo bird. Grab your kit and get clicking! Deadline for submission is March 31.

Annapolis Film Festival 🎬 âœ¨

Lights, camera, action — the 13th annual Annapolis Film Festival is less than 2 months away. Don’t miss the four-day blockbuster event on March 27–30, featuring 70 films, panels, parties, and coffee talks. It’s more than just movies — it’s the red carpet for creativity, where stories spark conversation, friendships form, and cinema transforms the way we see the world. In Scoop’s opinion, it’s the most magical movie event of the year.
