Interview with Drew Cronic, AACPS Chromebook change, new city laws...

Good morning, Annapolis. Did you know you can usually press one of the buttons on the gas station TV to mute it? You’re welcome.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • An interview with Drew Cronic

  • AACPS Chromebook changes

  • New city laws

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Introducing Iesha Young

There’s a new face in city government: Iesha Young, manager of the Office of Community Services. She comes to Annapolis government with 10 years of experience working for organizations like Young Invincibles and Community of Hope. Now she’s overseeing a staff of five that handles community outreach, grants, rental assistance, and more. Welcome to Annapolis, Iesha!

And speaking of community grants. . .

You have a little extra time to apply for a community grant from the City of Annapolis. The new deadline is March 4 at 4:30 PM. So if you’re a legit nonprofit in Annapolis (in formal terms, a 501C3 with a Certificate of Good Standing from the MD Department of Assessments and Taxation), go ahead and apply here.

Less Chrome at home

Providing (and repairing) Chromebooks for every student is expensive. So starting this fall, AACPS students will keep their school-issued Chromebooks at school and use personal devices for homework. Any student who needs a take-home Chromebook can still get one free of charge, it just won’t be the automatic option for all students anymore.

🔎 This may be a great time to check out the library’s Chromebook giveaway which is providing no-cost Chromebooks to keep for eligible county residents.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Rise Up Coffee Roasters opening in SP ☕

If all goes to plan, Rise Up Coffee will open its 13th café next week in Severna Park. The 2,300-square foot shop will be Rise Up’s biggest-ever on this side of the bridge and first Western Shore location to feature a drive-thru; we love local coffee with a drive-thru. It will be open seven days a week from 6 AM–7 PM right next to Homestead Gardens in Severna Park. If all inspections go well, they’ll open the doors on February 21! We will of course keep you updated.

Is WRNR coming back?

We’re all holding our breath to find out if we’ll have to stop belting WRNR at red lights when the driver next to us looks over any time soon. To those who don’t stop singing, you rock. ICYMI, broadcaster Steve Kingston sold WRNR last year. But now he’s bought Annapolis AM station WYRE, and has been streaming WRNR online since the sale. Considering Kingston has made other buys lately (including an FM translator last fall), it has a lot of us feeling hopeful WRNR may be back on the radio eventually. ($)

CIVIL NEWS

New city laws

A few big votes happened at Monday night’s City Council Meeting. If you’re a fan of quiet, you’ll be happy to hear (ha!) that the council passed an ordinance banning gas-powered leaf blowers (effective December 30) as well as some sound emitters that deter pests.

Looking to put your pad on Airbnb? You might have to wait. The council placed a temporary moratorium on short-term rental licenses until it can close some loopholes.

Finally, the council officially introduced the 2024 Comprehensive Plan, which makes recommendations on everything from housing and land use to transportation. A public hearing is scheduled for February 26. ($)

P.S. These laws only impact the city of Annapolis. It’s confusing but there are Annapolis addresses that are outside city limits. Those areas are governed by Anne Arundel County laws.
