Tribute to the Old 4th Ward, Maryland Wine Experience, sculpture garden...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Fort Lauderdale. As a fellow coastal city, we know their pain better than most. On a related note, many events in the Scoop are weather-dependent. Tomorrow’s looking iffy. I highly recommend checking organizers’ social media before setting any plans in stone.

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Happy birthday to Laurie Sears Deppa!

Sculpture Garden opening party (family-friendly)

Have you seen any sculptures that look like this around Annapolis?

That’s a David Hayes. It and 14 others are on lease to Annapolis from the David Hayes Foundation. They were scattered around for the last 1.5 years but this summer, they’ll all be in the same place – the Michael E. Busch Library. One of Annapolis’ first-ever sculpture gardens.

The Annapolis Arts District is hosting the official sculpture garden opening party tomorrow from 9 AM–2 PM. There will be live music, kids’ activities (like storytime), a food truck, and an ice cream truck. If the weather’s bad, the festivities will be modified and held inside. 1410 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

P.S. Like that family-friendly indicator? We’re revealing something new soon you’ll like even more.

If the Ritz-Carlton did plastic surgery

Surgery’s scary. Will it hurt? Who’s going to drive me? So many questions. But what if it went like this?

A private car drives you to the surgery center. They’ll also take you home and to post-operative appointments.

You spend the night in a quiet, peaceful hotel. Your surgeon visits to make sure everything’s going to plan. Don’t worry about when they leave. You can text your surgeon any time – including nights and weekends.

All you have to do is rest and recover. It should take 5–7 days. Sounds too good to be true, right?

It isn’t at Murthy Facial Plastic Surgery. Customer comfort is so important to Dr. Murthy that she crafted an unmatched concierge experience. Schedule a consultation today and start the journey to your most authentic self.

Quick Hits

Brush fire in Crownsville

Did you brush off this week’s National Weather Service text about high fire danger? Turns out they weren’t wrong. A brush fire in Crownsville closed River Road between Eva Gude Drive and Herald Harbor Road for 4 hours Wednesday. It took 41 firefighters to get it under control. Thankfully, no people or property were badly hurt. One firefighter went to the hospital for a minor injury.

Anne Arundel County remains on high alert for wildland fires.

P.S. Now’s a great (and also kinda ironic) time to tell you about Station 36’s Fire Prevention Fair. The family-friendly event includes cool demos, station tours, and much more. 914 Bay Ridge Road, Annapolis, MD 21403 from 12–4 PM Sunday 🚒

Do you know this vandal?

Some knucklehead has repeatedly vandalized Tyler Heights Elementary School, causing over $10k in damage. Before we break out the Bat Signal, AACPS wants your help to identify the perp. Here are your clues.

🕵️ The photos above
🕵️ The suspect arrives and departs on foot
🕵️ All incidents occur at night

If you have any information, call the school at 443-482-9610 or the police at 410-260-3439.

In other school news. . .

We didn’t have any snow days this winter. That’s bad for your neighbor who just dropped $1,800 on a shiny new snowblower (sorry, Steve) but good for Steve’s kids. No snow days = early summer break. Instead of June 16, everyone will sign HAGS in yearbooks on June 13. Some students will get out even earlier!

Library piloting gun lock program

Anne Arundel County Public Library is piloting a program where adults can get two complimentary gun locks at three AACPL branches – Busch Annapolis, Eastport-Annapolis Neck, and Glen Burnie. This should go without saying but, please don’t bring any guns with you when you pick up the locks.

Formal dress parade 🎖️

The Brigade of Midshipmen will present the first formal dress parade of the spring semester today. Come to Worden Field today at 4 PM for a taste of the tradition that makes Annapolis special. Where’s Worden Field? Check this handy map.

Bay Bridge Boat Show 🚤

Fancy a trip across the ole Bay Bridge? Unless Grandmom’s visiting my parents on the shore, that’s normally an H-E-double-hockey-sticks NO from me. But I make exceptions for boat shows.

The Bay Bridge Boat Show takes over the Bay Bridge Marina this weekend. You can explore 250+ boats from 8 to 75 feet long. There are almost 200 exhibitors. And you can test drive a BMW, learn about fishing, get on the water at the PropTalk Demo Dock, or even meet a boating influencer like Captain Boomies! Don’t miss the Friday or Saturday night parties. 10 AM–6 PM Friday and Saturday, 10 AM–5 PM Sunday.

Pro tip: Wear comfortable, slip-on shoes.

Tribute to The Old 4th Ward

The Old 4th Ward used to be called The Annapolis Black Wall Street. Unfortunately, the thriving community was uprooted in the name of “urban renewal” in the 60s and 70s. Almost three dozen businesses were lost. Anne Arundel County is holding a Tribute to the Old 4th Ward tomorrow from 11 AM to 1 PM at People’s Park - 44 Calvert Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

⚠️ Calvert Street will be closed between West and Clay Streets from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday.

Woodwinds start cruising this weekend ⛵️

The only boat that docks at Pusser’s more than my friend Brett is back from winter vacation. I’m speaking of course about Wedding Crashers stars Woodwind and Woodwind II. Captain Jen and her hardy crew raise the sails on the first cruise of 2023 at 3 PM today.

Captain Jen’s boats sail daily. They also host many special events (like history cruises with Dave Gendell) and private events (like Hollywood movie shoots or corporate parties). Learn more on schoonerwoodwind.com.

Annapolis Cup 🏆️

You’ve got one last chance to snag tickets to the 39th playing of the Annapolis Cup. Legend has it a cocky Naval Academy commandant bet a St. John’s freshman in 1982 that the Mids could beat the Johnnies in any sport, even croquet. The two schools have met in April for a friendly war of the wickets every April since (except during Covid).

And there’s no gentle way to put this. That commandant was . . . not right. St. John’s has won 30 of the 38 previous meetings. Will the dominance continue this weekend?

A Maryland Wine Experience 🍷

Did you know Maryland has over 100 wineries? Me neither. You can try a bunch of them this weekend without hours of driving. Just head to the 2-day Maryland Wine Experience at the Graduate Hotel. There are several sessions. You don’t have to attend them all, but you certainly can.

You can even book a discounted room at the Graduate. Probably not a bad idea after #roseallday #literally

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

Annapolis hires Assistant City Manager

If workplace sitcoms taught me anything, it’s that every manager needs a great assistant manager. Annapolis City Manager Michael Mallinoff seems to agree. He revealed Annapolis’ new Assistant City Manager, Victoria Buckland, on Wednesday.

Victoria’s resume is more diverse than a Subway car at rush hour. She’s worked for Montgomery County since 2007, most recently as COO of Health and Human Services. But before that, she was a robotics engineer at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
