THE DIGEST

Local authors discuss megalodons and mermaids 🦈🧜‍♀️🌎

Could ancient giant sharks called megalodons still exist in the deep sea? What should you do if stung by a jellyfish? Can we predict lightning strikes, and how is climate change affecting hurricanes? Two local authors, marine scientist Ellen Prager and meteorologist Dave Jones, are teaming up to provide you with answers to these and other questions in their new science book for ages 12+ titled Megalodons, Mermaids, and Climate Change: Answers to Your Ocean and Atmosphere Questions.

The book combines important facts with a fun approach. The release date is October 22 and the authors will be doing a book signing at Park Books on October 26, 11 AM–1 PM. Preorder now.

The Great Annapolis Pumpkins 🎃

If you saw forklifts bright and early yesterday, we have a gourd story. The Great Annapolis Pumpkins are now along Main St, Market Space, Maryland Ave, West St, and Compromise St. Presented by Visit Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, many pumpkins weigh over 1,000 pounds. Talk about a Jack-o-Giant! They’ll be carved on October 28–29 and on display through November 3. Local carver Nancy Baker, featured on Food Channel’s “Halloween Wars,” will join in. Visitors Center (26 West Street) staff will give directions, and online details are forthcoming. Don’t forget to tag those pumpkin poses with @NaptownScoop! 📸

Cole Brauer Sails into Annapolis ⛵

Cole Brauer, the 30-year old sailing phenom, is landing in Annapolis for the Sailboat Show. Brauer captivated the world with her entry in the Global Solo Challenge, and went on to become the first American woman to race solo and non-stop around the world. She’s in town to discuss her offshore adventures with another history-making female sailor, Lin Pardey. While Brauer captured her circumnavigation on social media, Pardey has written over 30 books on cruising around the world.

The event is called “Rockstars and Legends” and will feature a conversation between the two women on passagemaking, self-reliance on the open ocean, and the power of great storytelling. The talk takes place Friday (10/11) at 4:00 PM at the Jack Taylor Conference Center at the U.S. Naval Academy. Get tickets.

ASO + Art Farm Seminar 🎶 🎨

DYK, many artists throughout history have been inspired by musical works such as Whistler, Kandinsky, and Matisse? Well the next generation of artistic geniuses will have their chance to try out this method too! The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and Art Farm are collabing for an October 12 seminar from 1–3 PM at the ArtFarm Annapolis Studio. Attendees, ages 8–10, will listen to music and let it inspire their artwork. This January, the ASO will perform, “Pictures at an Exhibition”. The student artwork will be projected during their live performance at Maryland Hall. How cool is that? 🧑‍🎨 Register today.

Save the date: The Tug 💪

What started in 1997 as a playful rebellion against an unprovoked Spa Creek bridge closure has turned into the longest international Tug of War over water in the world. Locals know it best simply as the Tug (or Slaughter Across the Water). Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 2. Admission is free. Registration starts at 10 AM. Tug time is the crack o’ noon. Two Tugfest parties will occur, one on the Eastport side (Second St and Severn Ave) and the other on the Annapolis side at Susan Campbell Park. Expect live music, vendors, and kids’ activities. Proceeds benefit local charities.

The Maritime Republic of Eastport’s (MRE) next General Meeting is October 15 at 5:30 PM at the Eastport Democratic Club (525 State Street). The agenda will cover all things Tug: sponsors, vendors, and volunteers. Sign up for any of those 3 roles.

Rally for Riley 🎗

Here’s how you can make a huge difference in the life of a truly courageous young boy, Riley, and his amazing single mom, Ashley Whitney: Be a part of Rally for Riley on November 23, 2:30–6 PM at the Severna Park Community Center. This fundraiser event will help cover Riley’s treatment for stage 4 neuroblastoma and Ashley’s time off work from her teaching career to be by Riley’s side through it. The fundraiser on November 23 will bring together fitness, Zumba, shopping, and raffles — so if you’re interested in sponsoring, donating, volunteering, or supporting Ashley and Riley in any way you can, email [email protected].
