🍦One giant leap for Annapolis Hope

Dia de los Muertos, Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. On the off chance my across the street neighbor reads this, it is way too early to put up your Christmas tree.

Let’s get to it.

Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation announces huge matching donation for Annapolis Hope

Annapolis Hope just took a quantum leap. About a month ago, a new Scoop reader named Brian Giese (rhymes with ice) said he and his wife, Patty, wanted to help. Here’s their story.

It starts with a love story. 25 years ago, Brian and a friend walked into a party and noticed a photo on the fridge. “Who is that?” Brian asked the host.

“That’s my friend, Patty. She’s coming soon.” Brian turned to his friend and said, “Let’s wait by the front door.”

4 months later, Brian and Patty were married. They celebrated 25 years of marriage a few weeks ago with a gala event here in Annapolis.

In 2008, Brian founded the technology company True Influence. Over the coming years, he led it to employ hundreds of employees all over the world. Then in 2021 as Brian was scouting for companies to acquire, one of his prospects bought True Influence instead.

The Gieses sold True Influence, moved to Annapolis, and now spend time on their foundation – The Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation. Its mission is to support Christian education and social programs in the Annapolis community.

When the Gieses heard the story of Annapolis Hope and our support of the Mireles family, they were so moved they wanted to contribute.

“We were shocked and saddened to hear of the senseless murders of Mario Mireles and his father Nicholas. We knew Mario and found him to be a personable and caring young man.” Brian and Patty said.

So, Annapolis Hope is incredibly grateful to announce the Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation has committed $25,000 in matching donations to save the Mireles family home.

This means when you donate $50, Brian and Patty will too. If you donate $3,000, Brian and Patty will too.

We are incredibly thankful for this gift and cannot thank the Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation enough. Click here to participate in the match.

THE DIGEST

Top clicks of the week

What kind of winter can we expect?

Every year, a bunch of meteorologists get together and predict our fates for the upcoming winter. (Sure sounds like witchcraft to me, but okay. . . ) This year, the weather witches 🧙‍♀️ predict a colder and wetter winter for Maryland because of El Niño. That doesn’t guarantee more snow because temperatures may not be low enough. But last winter saw a measly 0.2 inches at BWI (compared to our 19.3-inch average) so the snow bar is pretty low.

Severn River headwaters getting restored

The Jabez Branch 3 is polluted. That’s bad by itself. But wait until you see where the stream runs:

Jabez Branch 3 → Jabez Branch Waterway → Severn Run → Severn River

See? Not good for the Severn River. Development, highways, and climate change have all played a part in polluting its headwaters.

Luckily, two projects to restore the polluted stream just launched after a decade of preparation. One is on state land and one is on county property. Workers will fill in eroded areas and restore native plants – and ideally bring back a population of trout. County and state money will fund the projects. ($)
