Bike to Work Week, county budget hearings, Forward Brewing turns five...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Now that Mother’s Day is past, it’s time to start thinking about Father’s Day. Home Depot and Lowe’s gift cards always work. But why not get more creative? Try an awesome pocket knife (try the James Brand), unique cookbook (like Cooking on Fire), or high-quality outdoor work gloves (because dads love yardwork).

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Bike to Work Week

  • County budget hearings

  • Forward Brewing turns five

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Don’t forget to be thankful for mom and dad all year round 😉

THE DIGEST

Most Scoop readers agree with county exec raise 💰

Last week, we had to ask: How do you feel about giving the county executive a raise? ICYMI, county councilmember Julie Hummer introduced a bill to give the exec a raise from $142k to $180k, with raises of $3k every year for three years. If that seems steep, keep in mind the county executive hasn’t received a raise since 2018. So, we decided to survey our readers to see what you think. 330 of you chimed in, and a plurality (48%) said, “Yes, the raise is justified.”

Here's a full breakdown of votes out of 330:

✅ Yes, the raise is justified: 161
❌ No, the current salary is enough: 113
📈 It should be higher: 17
📉 It should be lower: 22
🤷 I’m not sure: 17

As much as we’re proud of what we do at the Scoop, we admit our survey doesn’t have any actual influence. If you really want to make your opinion known, be sure to attend the public hearing on the bill June 2.

Real ID for Naval Academy visits 🪪

For anyone with gray hairs reading this, it’s probably been a while since you’ve been carded. But as of last week, you have a new reason to think about your ID. That’s because you need to have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or other ID to board a plane or access a federal facility. Case in point: the Naval Academy. If you plan on visiting USNA campus, make sure your ID is compliant, which you can do through the MVA.

Also worth noting: USNA updated its rules for non-citizen visitors. Non-citizens visiting the academy need to be with a US citizen with DoD credentials and escort privileges and only for official events. So if you have guests visiting from out of the country, maybe take them to Boatyard for crabcakes instead. ($)

Commuter County? 🚙

You might’ve heard Anne Arundel County tout itself as a great place to live, work, and play — but is it and or or when it comes to live/work? According to the AAEDC’s Commuter Report, only 37% of AA workers live and work in the county. The rest are either commuting in or out, and they’re doing it in pretty equal numbers (63% commute into the county and 62.2% commute out).

A few other numbers you might find interesting:

Who’s coming in?
🚘 12.3% are coming from Baltimore County
🚘 8.5% from Prince George’s County
🚘  7.8% from Baltimore City
🚘  6.2% from Howard County
🚘  5% from Montgomery County

Who’s going out?

🚘  9.2% to Howard County
🚘  8.3% to Baltimore County
🚘  6.3% to Montgomery County
🚘  5.6% to Washington, D.C.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Forward Brewing turns 5 🍺

If Forward Brewing were a person, they’d still be about 16 years shy of the legal drinking age. But the good news is they’re not a person, and 5 years is a pretty major milestone for a small biz! The Eastport brewery (418 Fourth Street, Annapolis, 21403) celebrates its 5th anniversary this Friday with a birthday party from noon to 9 PM and $5 beers all day (to show their appreciation for 5 years, of course). They’ll also host Double T Oyster Ranch to shuck their Tall Timbers oysters later in the evening, and complimentary birthday cake will be served while it lasts. Get details.

Strap on those helmets and kick up those kickstands — it’s officially Bike to Work Week, not just in Annapolis but all across the country. National Bike to Work Week runs May 12–16, and it’s an excuse to cycle everywhere you need to go instead of taking a car (if it’s safe and realistic). Riding a bike means exercise and less pollution, making it a win-win. It’s also just fun.

Planning to bike your commute this week? Be sure to tell your boss you’ll be late and attend Bike to Work Day on Friday at City Dock. The gathering runs 7–9 AM with speakers, giveaways, refreshments, and bike safety checks. Register in advance for a T-shirt.

Single tix to Navy games now on sale 🎟️

Even if you’re a diehard fan, you can’t always commit to every game. Regardless of what that Modelo commercial says. But if you felt FOMO when Navy football season tickets went on sale a few weeks ago, don’t worry — your time has come. Single-game tickets are on sale today, so if you know which games your kids will definitely be sliding down the hill for, grab those tickets and get it on your calendar. 🗓️
