Huge crash on Bay Bridge, Register of Wills indicted, Ponche...

Good morning, Annapolis. American Airlines scheduled a flight from Kansas City to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl with the flight number 1989. Taylor Swift’s fifth album is called 1989. The return flight? AA87. Travis Kelce’s number. This has been your marketing lesson for the day.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Huge crash on Bay Bridge

  • Register of Wills indicted

  • Ponche 🍹

Let’s get to it.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Ponche is hiring 🍹

What’s Ponche? It’s a tiki bar above the former 1771 G&T, formerly known as Harvest, formerly known as Riordan’s at 26 Market Space in Annapolis. They’re ISO bartenders to serve “drinks, dranks, and all the nectar of the tiki gods.” Ideally, applicants are a little enthusiastic about tiki, outgoing, slightly sarcastic, and know how to (somewhat) pour a drink. Interested? Stop in today (1/29) between 1–5 PM. While we love sharing job opportunities, we’re mostly excited because this means Ponche is opening soon!

Outdoor Dining Pilot Program extended again, permanent law coming soon

Eating outside has been a fixture of Annapolis since the covid pandemic. But Annapolis’ city code (aka the law) doesn’t actually allow it in all the current forms we’re seeing. Instead, emergency resolutions passed by City Council during 2020 have been extended again and again while we figure out how to permanently codify it. Ward 8 Alderman Ross Arnett told the Capital last week that he’s “very close” to introducing a bill to create formal and permanent regulations. Last week’s extension of the program expires after a year or once permanent legislation is passed, whichever comes first. ($)

CIVIL NEWS

Anne Arundel County Register of Wills indicted for alleged check theft

Notes: Indicted is a fancy word for accused, not convicted, and the Register of Wills leads the government agency that oversees estate transfers after death.

Anne Arundel County Register of Wills Erica Griswold has been accused of personally cashing a check meant to pay someone’s inheritance tax. Allegedly, the office received a $6,645 cashier’s check payable to Griswold for an open tax bill in June. The indictment says she cashed the check and has not paid the money to her office. Eyebrows were raised in August when the check sender received an invoice for the bill they believed to have been paid.

A hearing is scheduled for February 21. Griswold’s attorney said she planned to plead not guilty and wouldn’t comment further. ($)

Ken Niumatalolo taps into Navy football connections 🏈

Ken Niumatalolo was officially hired as San Jose State University’s football coach on January 21. And he wasted no time tapping his Navy football connections to assemble his staff. First, he hired Marcus Thomas away from Navy to coach his running backs.

  • Marcus played slotback at Navy for Ken from 2010–2013 and is the all-time kickoff return leader with 2,388 yards. He coached Navy’s slotbacks last season.

Ken also hired Mike Judge as his tight ends coach. They spent 11 years together in Annapolis (2008–2018) when Mike coached Navy’s fullbacks. ($)
