County sues over toxic chemicals, squeaky good read, introducing Tuesday Theatre Talk...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Why don’t seagulls fly over the Bay? Because then they’d be bagels!

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon & Rebecca Kraybill

THE DIGEST

☣️ County sues for toxic chemicals

Lord Voldemort, Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster . . . all the best villains try to live forever. 🧛 Here’s another villain living forever: PFAS. These nasty chemicals are called “forever chemicals” because they’re bad for humans and animals but don’t degrade. That’s why the county joined with other jurisdictions and states to sue companies that use PFAS in firefighting foam. The suit says the companies knew these dangers but continued manufacturing. Real villainous behavior. If the suit wins, the county will use the payments to update infrastructure to resist PFAS. ($)

Foundation awards $ to local nonprofits

The county’s Community Foundation just awarded $233,557 to 9 local nonprofits through its Fund for Anne Arundel (FFAA). This year, the grants were directed to groups that focus on the physical and mental health of kids and families. The recipients are Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Charting Careers Inc. and Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park, Chesapeake Arts Center, HOPE For All, Services from the Heart, Severna Park Community Center, Start the Adventure in Reading, and The Complete Player Charity.

  • Scoop works with the Community Foundation to select the beneficiary of our (100% sold out 🎉) anniversary party. This year, we’ve chosen Charting Careers, a local nonprofit inspiring youth in underserved Annapolis communities to discover their power and reach their goals.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

🐭 A squeaky good read

Meet Chester. He’s an earnest midshipman who wants to follow in his grandpa’s footsteps during Plebe Summer. Oh, and uh, he’s . . . a mouse. A midshipmouse. If you’ve ever imagined that rigorous rodent training happens behind Academy walls – that’s the Naval Mouse Academy – author Susan Weisberg’s series is for you.

She just published her third and final book, Chester Midshipmouse Time and Tide and she’ll be on the Yard at the Midshipmen Store Thursday (8/10) from 12–5 PM to sign her books.

  • After we shared Susan’s book series in May, a Scoop reader (not even a mouse) drove to the Academy all the way from the Naval Air Station Patuxent River to buy it!

CIVIL NEWS

People-powered database launches for police conduct

Can software lead to police accountability? The Anne Arundel Caucus of African American Leaders hopes so. They’re launching a one-year pilot program with Sivil – software that lets citizens submit complaints (or compliments) about officers.

Although the public can’t download data on an individual officer, caucus members can aggregate it for monitoring. The project is called the George Floyd Transparency Project and they’ll officially unveil it at tonight’s meeting (8/8). Once launched, it will be available on the caucus’ website.

Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson told the Capital he’s “not diametrically opposed” to the project but is still being advised on how to collaborate with it. The Caucus hopes the Anne Arundel County Police Accountability Board will implement the software after the yearlong test. Philadelphia and Arlington County are current Sivil clients. ($)

One-room Schoolhouses for the 21st Century

Curiosity may kill cats, but it’s innovation rocket fuel in humans. Unfortunately, our school system crushes curiosity year by year until kids hate learning because learning = school and school = boring. As Einstein said, “It’s a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.” Acton Academy Annapolis’ unique approach stimulates creativity through collaborative work, mixed-age classes, tons of outdoor activities, and much more. Enrollment is open for Fall 2023 until August 15. Curious? Click here to learn more.*
