THE DIGEST
âŁď¸ County sues for toxic chemicals
Lord Voldemort, Dracula, Frankensteinâs monster . . . all the best villains try to live forever. đ§ Hereâs another villain living forever: PFAS. These nasty chemicals are called âforever chemicalsâ because theyâre bad for humans and animals but donât degrade. Thatâs why the county joined with other jurisdictions and states to sue companies that use PFAS in firefighting foam. The suit says the companies knew these dangers but continued manufacturing. Real villainous behavior. If the suit wins, the county will use the payments to update infrastructure to resist PFAS. ($)
Foundation awards $ to local nonprofits
The countyâs Community Foundation just awarded $233,557 to 9 local nonprofits through its Fund for Anne Arundel (FFAA). This year, the grants were directed to groups that focus on the physical and mental health of kids and families. The recipients are Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Charting Careers Inc. and Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park, Chesapeake Arts Center, HOPE For All, Services from the Heart, Severna Park Community Center, Start the Adventure in Reading, and The Complete Player Charity.
Scoop works with the Community Foundation to select the beneficiary of our (100% sold out đ) anniversary party. This year, weâve chosen Charting Careers, a local nonprofit inspiring youth in underserved Annapolis communities to discover their power and reach their goals.

WHATâS HAPPENINâ
đ A squeaky good read
Meet Chester. Heâs an earnest midshipman who wants to follow in his grandpaâs footsteps during Plebe Summer. Oh, and uh, heâs . . . a mouse. A midshipmouse. If youâve ever imagined that rigorous rodent training happens behind Academy walls â thatâs the Naval Mouse Academy â author Susan Weisbergâs series is for you.
She just published her third and final book, Chester Midshipmouse Time and Tide and sheâll be on the Yard at the Midshipmen Store Thursday (8/10) from 12â5 PM to sign her books.
After we shared Susanâs book series in May, a Scoop reader (not even a mouse) drove to the Academy all the way from the Naval Air Station Patuxent River to buy it!

CIVIL NEWS
People-powered database launches for police conduct
Can software lead to police accountability? The Anne Arundel Caucus of African American Leaders hopes so. Theyâre launching a one-year pilot program with Sivil â software that lets citizens submit complaints (or compliments) about officers.
Although the public canât download data on an individual officer, caucus members can aggregate it for monitoring. The project is called the George Floyd Transparency Project and theyâll officially unveil it at tonightâs meeting (8/8). Once launched, it will be available on the caucusâ website.
Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson told the Capital heâs ânot diametrically opposedâ to the project but is still being advised on how to collaborate with it. The Caucus hopes the Anne Arundel County Police Accountability Board will implement the software after the yearlong test. Philadelphia and Arlington County are current Sivil clients. ($)
