The View From Here: Elevating Naptown Homes

Not every detail is meant to stand out, but the right ones always do.

This Annapolis renovation features three distinct roofing styles—shingle, metal, and flat—each selected to complement the home’s clean design and the practical demands of Mid-Atlantic living.

Shingle roofing offers durability with a classic coastal profile. Metal accents add a sleek, modern edge and withstand the elements with minimal upkeep. Flat rooflines create a strong architectural finish and leave room for decks, views, and outdoor living.

Together, these materials don’t compete—they complete the home’s vision from the top down.

A new roof is a big investment, so remember:
• Hire a licensed, reliable contractor
• Choose materials built for Maryland’s climate
• Prioritize solar reflectance and emissivity
• Maintain your roof with seasonal cleanings and inspections

At RAM Construction, we build roofs that don’t just hold up—they elevate everything beneath them. Bring your dream home to life.

The Annapolis mayor race 2025 has its first Republican candidate — Bob O’Shea recently filed, marking his latest candidacy after runs for mayor in 2013 and for the Maryland House of Delegates in 2019. A military contractor by profession, Bob is the first Republican in any city race this year. Primaries are Sept. 16 and the general election is Nov. 4. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

CONFIRMED: Peter Chang is Coming to Annapolis!

Gosh we love being right. After some online sleuthing (mostly property records and construction permits), we wrote that Peter Chang might be bringing one of his beloved Chinese restaurants to 918 Bay Ridge Road (the former home of Details and Design). Then the story heated up like a bamboo steamer.

Steve Adams – marketing and outreach manager/stairstepper afficionado at AAEDC - saw Mr. Chang at the Governor’s Buy Local Cookout on Wednesday and did what we probably should have done in the first place. He just asked him if he was opening a restaurant.

Well, he said yes. But as we all know, construction and permitting in Annapolis is no joke, especially when installing a grease trap is involved. So if you need some Peter Chang cooking right freaking now, we suggest heading to his closest restaurant â€“ Peter Chang at 6000 Merriweather Drive, Suite BN175 in Columbia, MD.

Fun fact: We just launched another Scoop in Columbia so if you have any friends over there in Howard County, tell them about columbiascoop.com please 🙂

Potato Valley Celebrates 30 Years of Delicious Spuds

There are very few restaurants in the country that specialize in baked potatoes, a fact that is true a head-scratcher if you’ve ever experienced the delicious menu at Potato Valley on State Circle, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary next week. The hearty lunch spot opened back in 1995 when owners Barbara Ripani and husband Andy Ekbladh opened the first location of the Swedish franchise in the United States (Europeans appreciate a good potato). Today, the shop on the circle goes through over 30,000 potatoes each year, filling them with delicious toppings like Cuban chicken, artichoke dip, Texas chili, and much, much more. And it’s still the only franchise location in the US. If you stop by the store on Wednesday between 11 and 4, they’ll be having a 30th anniversary event with cake, champagne, and free potatoes. Stop by!

Foodie Friday: Outdoor Shopping 🍑🌽🧀🥚☕️🫐

Outdoor shopping makes us feel Parisian. Just visit one of these fine spots for fresh produce, dairy to die for, and so much more.

Diehl’s Produce: With locations in Eastport (921 Chesapeake Ave), Annapolis (1410 Forest Dr.), and Severna Park (50 W McKinsey Rd), it’s easy to scoop up summer staples like peaches, tomatoes, and corn. Open 9 AM—6 PM (Mon–Sat) and 9 AM—5 PM (Sun).

Wildberry Farm + Market: Farm-fresh eggs, coffee, and seasonal bakery items like Lemon Squash Blueberry bread await every Saturday through August 23, 9 AM–noon. — 1047 St Stephens Church Rd, Crownsville

AA Co Farmers’ Market: Long lines form for Nice Farms Creamery’s milk, cheese, and ice cream — for good reason. Get your dairy fix on Saturdays (7 AM—noon) and Sundays (9 AM—noon) at 275 Harry S Truman Pkwy, Annapolis.

Severna Park Farmers Market: Sure, their Instagram makes us crave blueberries and snap peas, but wouldn’t these sunflowers make the perfect addition to your kitchen? Oh, and their Eastern Shore peaches will ruin grocery store fruit for you forever. Open Saturdays, 8 AM to noon at the Park & Ride lot on Ritchie Hwy and Jones Station Rd.

New businesses you might recognize 🏬

Yesterday, we gave you a recap on some restaurants and eateries that have opened up so far this year. But that’s only half the story — the local business scene is also thriving with retailers, services, and all kinds of other commercial endeavors. Here are some you might recognize from their opening in the past few months:

🛍️ The Lucky Knot men’s store — coastal-inspired preppy attire. Forget a men’s section. They opened a whole new store!

🛍️ Chaney Enterprises — the construction material company moved its headquarters to Riva Road

🛍️ Gotta Have HeArt Studio — inspiring art programs for all ages

🛍️ Be With Me Playseum — all kinds of hands-on, interactive play for little ones

🛍️ Yoga Factory – Arnold — the Annapolis-based yoga studio expanded to Arnold because Arnold people don’t like crossing the Severn

🛍️ Arhaus — quality furniture. Just moved across the street

🛍️ Old Line Golf — member’s only indoor golf experience

🛍️ Spirit Shop of Annapolis — offering premium wine, liquor, and beer on Riva Road

🛍️ SkinSpirit — a med spa specializing in all things aesthetic

You don’t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, “If your body is flexible, you’re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.” In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility. Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints — especially women — were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility.

Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your no-cost intro stretch today.

MD State Parks 25 in 2025 Adventure Challenge 🌳

In the mood for adventure this weekend? Consider getting started on this challenge (if you haven’t already): DNR‘s “25 in 2025” Adventure Challenge runs through November 15, giving you just under 4 months to complete at least 25 of the themed challenges designed to get you — an eager adventurer — out to visit a new or favorite state park, snap a few pictures, and submit them.

You’ve got a few pretty close to home, like a visit to the Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse to check off the Light the Way Challenge, which encourages you to see a lighthouse from a state park. Others might require a little bit of a drive — but are definitely worth the trip.

Peace Love Pickleball Fundraiser

Attention Pickleheads: Our friends at the Hussman Foundation — yes, the same folks who once got Ryan on the runway for Fashion For a Cause — are hosting Peace, Love & Pickleball! on Friday, August 1 from 6–9 PM at The Putaway in Millersville. Thankfully, pickleball is more our speed than modeling. 🤣 This indoor tourney benefits six local nonprofits: AA Co. Food Bank, Charting Careers, Hospice of the Chesapeake, Light House, Rise and Shine Bakery, and STAIR.

Enjoy an exhibition match with special guests like Steuart Pittman and Gavin Buckley, food and drinks (including pickleball-themed cocktails), raffles, and a skills clinic. Can’t attend? Donate online and support your favorite cause.

CIVIL NEWS

Heritage Harbour Water Tower Meets Opposition From Residents

Heritage Harbour neighbors have gathered together to start a group called “Stop the Tower,” opposing the construction of an $11 million elevated water tank on a property owned by the Annapolis Moose Lodge. Stop the Tower members say a 200-foot tower will negatively affect the neighborhood’s character and potentially impact their home values, while also proposing an environmental risk to the local wildlife. The Dept. of Public Works chose the Moose Lodge site because it is within Heritage Harbour’s pressure zone, where the water is maintained at a standard elevation and allows for easier distribution, but that other areas were considered. Both the DPW and the public have a meeting scheduled for September when concerns and proposals will be voiced.

County Council Meets on Monday Night

The County Council will be meeting on Monday night at 7 PM in the Arundel Center on Calvert St. To see what’s on the docket, click here. If you can’t attend in person, watch from your couch by clicking on Arundel TV Live. And remember that if you want to participate or submit testimony, there are deadlines so be sure to register ahead of time. 7 PM at 44 Calvert St.
